View Full Version : The Unwritten Code Of The Laundry Room

So,
I come back to the laundry room in my apartment building to switch my clothes to the dryer, when I notice a lady there, taking out my stuff from a washer and putting it all on a nearby table.
So I am like,WTF are you doing?
Her: I need to use the washer
Me: Well, why the fu(* didn't you wait a few minutes. It just stopped 2-3 minutes ago?!
Her: No need to be so rude. Next time just be here on time.
Me: I don't need to be here on time. You had no right to fu** touch my stuff. You know exactly how I feel and why I am saying that,so don't fu** give me your "it's your fault" speech.
Was I right? It's not the first time it's happening and I kind of lost it. It's not like I was an hour late.
There was time a few years back when I found my clothes really wet and soapy on a side table, with someone elses clothing inside the machine. There were quite a few empty washers around,so it didn't make any sense.

This is why I refuse to live somewhere without my own washer/dryer. I used to do my laundry at weird hours, just to avoid this kind of thing.

I think she was wrong in not waiting a bit to get her clothes in, but your disrespectgul tone and language pretty much invalidated any high ground you may have had IMHO. After the way you talked to her, she could have done much worse and still been okay in my books.

to me she's in the wrong since you were only a couple minutes late.. same thing happened to me but I didn't catch the guy on time.. I just saw him walking out of the laundry room as I entered.. so I left a note on the machine for him to give him a piece of my mind.. the fu$%er put the note on somebody else's door cuz he thought I lived there..

Wait till she's gone and piss in her machine.
To add to this plan, pee in a waterbottle first in the privacy of the washroom. Then dump the contents into her machine.

Ya know what as uncool as it is for people to touch your clothes it would be just as uncool for her to sit around and wait for you wasting her time.....lots of people leave their **** in the washer for more than a few minutes so if you don't like it be there when it's done so it doesn't happen!

don't u mean UNWRITTEN...
yeah that would piss me off...i know my wife had that happen to her and wow she let loose on this one jabroni..
anyways i had the opposite happen..some people have no decency and respect for others and leave their clothes in the dryer for periods of more than an hour i one time put someone's clothes on top and oddly i came back an hour later and the clothes were still on top of the dryer...that shows you how some people don't respect the rules...if u are lining up to a washroom u get in and get out...don't understand how the principles are different when it comes to laundry room

Agreed, she should have waited a few more minutes. But after the way you spoke to her, she should thrown your stuff on the floor after you talked to her like that.
Next time, if you absolutely don't want people touching your stuff, stay by your washer (read a book or something) or come EARLIER to pick up your stuff. Maybe a waste of time, but if it's that important to you...

Yeah, u shouldn't be touching other ppls laundry. I've seen ppl at the laundrymat get their clothes washed and then go out for a while and come back when its ready. And only the owner of the laundrymat should decide whos clothes to touch or what not cuz he/she has to operate the business

Yeah I think 10 minutes is plenty. Our building has two washers and two dryers for four floors of people. If I don't take your clothes out after waiting 10 minutes, someone else will.

sorry OP, you were in the wrong!
If it's a communal washer/dryer, and the owner isn't there, the unwritten rule is to take the stuff out. You are supposed to be there before it finishes. How's anyone to know if you are going to be a few mins or a few hrs?
Next time, you don't want someone touching your stuff, be there to make sure. And you shouldn't have gotten so angry and be so rude over something so trivial. This person is your neighbour, you may need their help one day.
So,There was time a few years back when I found my clothes really wet and soapy on a side table, with someone elses clothing inside the machine. There were quite a few empty washers around,so it didn't make any sense.
They stole your "wash" i.e. your money. Another reason you should always stick around. Seems you leave your clothes unsupervised often. That's a bad habit for both reasons you see above :)

I used to live in an apartment building that had 5 washers and dryers for 24 floors of residents.
I got my laundry taken out of the machines plenty of times and I also took laundry out of someone's else machine lots of times as well.
I learned that if I didn't want anyone touching my stuff, I better be prepared to stay in the laundry room the entire time.
People don't know how long you will be. Some people have kept laundry in a machine for hours before they've come back for it.
If there wasn't another machine available, as soon as someone's laundry was finished, I took it out.

I agree. Yeah, maybe she should've waited a few more minutes but there's no way for her to know that your washer was off for only a few minutes. For all she knows, your crap could've been sittin there for hours.
You were late, so she was right to take your stuff out. Doubt she'd want to sit there while you take your sweet time. It's a communal washer. You get what you pay for.
I feel bad for the poor lady tho - gettin cussed out by some punk. She was perfectly polite and you were acting like an immature jackass.

OP is wrong (and, apparently, an ass). Wasting her time for no reason is worse than her touching your laundry. Between that and your incredibly rude words, you deserve a beating, not reassurance from RFD that you were "in the right".
When your money runs out, it is no longer your machine. Be there to remove your clothes, or expect anything.

I guess the woman should've waited a bit. But maybe she didn't know when your wash was finished.
But having you swearing your head off while she remained calm makes me side with her. I don't care if you don't like what she did...deal with it respectfully.
If you don't want your clothes touched, than you be there on time. The world doesn't wait for you.

Agreeing with most ppl, my unwritten code of the communal laundry room is, if I come in, and all washers/dryers are full, I'll take out your clothes and nicely place them aside. How do I know if it's JUST finished, or if you've left them there for two hours?
ItemFinder
Apr 16th, 2007, 04:54 PM
Hell no. It's your own fault you didn't get there in time. If you want to do laundry, come early, otherwise suck it up and wait until I'm finished. If I saw you taking my laundry out, I'd tear you a new one. Luckily, I can actually afford a washer and dryer and don't have to put up with this nonsense.

It's not the first time it's happening...
if something you don't like keep happening, that's a subtle hint for you to change your behaviour!
Your neighbour had no idea whether you would show up in 2 minute or 2 hours. Why would you expect her to adjust HER schedule to suit YOUR convenience?
In your place i would sincerely apologize for swearing at her. Even if you were 100% in the right (you're not) you're a real ass to flip out like that.

The unwritten rule of the laundry room is you don't keep a commercial washer / dryer occupied while you are no longer using it.
You acted like a total douchebag, especially with the 'no right to fu** touch my stuff' bit. Do you own the washer and dryer? No? Then she can take it out when the washer and dryer is no longer in use. I've seen stories like this end up with people's clothes thrown in the garbage, so if you make it a habit especially with your attitude, you will have surprises in store for you.

When I lived in dorms/apartments with communal laundry, this happened to me multiple times.
Generally, as long as the person puts it on a clean counter surface, I don't really think it's a big deal.
My general rule is that it's ok to pull out people clothes from a dryer (generally coz they take longer and they're in more demand) but not a washer. It kind of sucks to have anyone come back to a pile of sopping wet clothing on a counter anyway.

I HATE when people touch my clothes.
This past week when I did my laundry, I went back to collect my clothes from the dryer. When I got there someone had opened the door (and left it open) and I could feel my clothes were still wet. This was the only dryer being used out of 10 so I don't understand why someone would do that.
Anyways, there was only one person, who I knew opened my dryer as there was only one dryer going. So I opened up their dryer and left their stuff wet as their was 25 minutes left in the 1 hour timer. Serves the ass**** right.
On another note, WHY would you ever want to touch other people stuff to take it out of the washer/dryer? That is gross to me so I don't do it no matter what. I don't want to touch random strangers' underwear and stuff.

To get into our laundry room, you need a special key. So it's not some random kid playing around or some "random jackass". And no, I just moved into the apartment recently, so I did not piss anyone off.
There was no one in the whole laundry room the whole morning while I was doing my own laundry. Judging by the dampness of my clothes, I could tell someone opened it about halfway into the cycle. Lo and behold, the only other person using the laundry room had their clothes in the dryer about halfway into the 60 minute dry cycle.
I didn't have enough time to go back up get some more change and dry my clothes again as I had class so I had to hang up all my clothes in my room (an unbelievable pain in the ass), not to mention the amount of time I had to waste.
So please don't judge me or question my morals when you don't know the whole story. Thanks.

Fine, you need a special key, which I'm sure every tenant in your apartment building has, so pretty much anyone from your building could've done that.

Yes, the world is full of random people walking around, going into locked laundry rooms and opening dryer lids for fun. I mean I had a couple minutes free yesterday and that's how I chose to spend it.
Were you actually there with me that day? Are you not making an assumption when you are calling my actions "childish", based only by what you have read?
Are jurors ever 100% sure that someone has committed a crime? I guess by your logic, everyone is innocent unless there was someone that was actually there to see them commit the crime.
I find it so great that you think so highly of yourself that you feel the need to judge others.

Well what probably happened was that they were being stupid/careless/inconsiderate and didn't notice that the dryer was occupied before they opened it. Are you able to comprehend that?
Who raised you to be this way?
I find it highly insulting that you're questioning how my parents raised me based on one single post that you've read. Do you feel you have some special insight into my life based on this one post?
Did you ever stop to consider that I volunteered my time at a soup kitchen and a youth center before you questioned how I was raised?
Did your parents raise you to be ignorant and judgmental of others or did you learn that by yourself?

I hate hate hate people touching my clothes. So I just make the effort to get back down there in time to get my clothes out so nobody's waiting (or not) for me to take them out myself. But when the washer shows the time remaining and it's just a few minutes, c'mon, give me a break. If I were to leave them there for hours, I could understand. On the flip side are the people who leave their stuff in the machines for a very long time...cuz I don't like touching other people's clothes anymore than I want them touching mine. Simple common courtesy should be exercised when sharing washing facilitites....and c'mon it's not hard to do that.

Well what probably happened was that they were being stupid/careless/inconsiderate and didn't notice that the dryer was occupied before they opened it. Are you able to comprehend that?
I find it highly insulting that you're questioning how my parents raised me based on one single post that you've read. Do you feel you have some special insight into my life based on this one post?
Did you ever stop to consider that I volunteered my time at a soup kitchen and a youth center before you questioned how I was raised?
Did your parents raise you to be ignorant and judgmental of others or did you learn that by yourself?
Yep, maybe that was the case. Maybe you they careless and didn't notice and left your dryer open. In any case, I'm sure it wasn't done on purpose.
The difference is that you were fully aware of what you were doing and decided to carry on with your actions anyway. Did you accomplish anything by that? Did it make you feel any better? If it did, then it speaks volumes of your character.
And ok, you volunteer in a soup kitchen. Do you want a cookie for being an outstanding citizen? I don't even know what this has to with with this conversation.
Anyway, I'm done with this thread, as I feel it's going in circles. Feel free to carry on with it though.

When I use public facilities I expect clothes will be moved once the machine is done if there is a lineup.
I can't believe you swore AT that woman like that. Get some manners.
