I haven't been able to find dollar values on the Ministry site, so does anyone know the current or recent cost of a custom plate in Ontario? Is it a one time fee?

Yes, it is a one-time fee.

FYI:

I just got a set for myself.

I ordered them from a kiosk at Cloverdale Mall and recieved the plate in 10 days.

I drove to a Licensing Office. Removed my old plates from the car, brought both sets in ... paid the sticker fee (with a small rebate for the time I had left on the sticker I was handing in) and attached the new plates and stickers to my car in the parking lot. Took about 10 minutes in the licensing office.

You will need all of your ownership papers and proof of insurance on the vehicle so bring all of that stuff in with you

side question -

does the ministry ask question like why did you choose this license plate, say if its a foreign word, or like a nickname that they might think has a gang association. Any trouble with it?

From the link posted above...

Once reserved, your plate must still pass a review committee, which may reject the plate if it is considered to be objectionable, for example:

* derogatory
* profane
* racist
* sexual
* religious.

They dont ask but you need to provide the meaning of the plate in the box beside when applying for one and then you are pending approval.

I believe I paid $220ish for mine last year ...

When the term bukkake is used in Japan, it usually refers to a method of preparing noodles and not the sexual act.

nice...however this car is registered in Ontario, so taking that word as a sexual act is a fair game.......btw who would put a term for preparing noodles on their license plate? i believe he meant the other meaning of that word.

Nope, there's no difference in price whether you have 3 characters or 8. You can check plate availability with those kiosks in the malls.

There's no difference in price NOW ... there once was.
I remember when I was really young in Fairview Mall trying plates out to see how much it would cost me.
Years later, nothing has changed :D

I spent circa $300 (can't remember exactly how much now) for custom plates for my Ariel Atom 2. That included a Canadian flag, which I wanted because mine is the first and only Atom licensed in Canada. ;)
