Hey guys,
I am considering changing my tires...and would like to know whats a decent all-season tire that will be good in snow as well...
I am seriously considering Falken Ziex ZE-512 (i think thats the model) - is this good for the snow?
Also what about Nokian WR...are these terribly expensive? anyone know a cheap place in the GTA for these?
Thanks.

I have some of the Falken 512 tires, but also have a set of winter tires. The Falken 512 are okay in the snow not great. When its icy, any all-season tire will be very slippery.
I think the tire is good for non-winter, but don't expect too much from it during the winter, having dedicated winter tires is still the best advice.

I also run on Falken Ziex 512, and even though they claim it's an all-season tire, I would consider it a marginal summer tire. In other words, don't try to run these in the winter because the compound seems to freeze up (compared to other all-seasons) and there's inadequate traction as a result (let alone the tread pattern and depth being inadequate for snow).
I have a separate set of winter tires which I would definately recommend if you were getting these tires.

I have these tires on my summer rims for my Audi, great tires for the season, but not for winter.

-they get an okay mark for snow...but other posts say you should get another set of winter tires
-i was in the same predicament a while ago, and although these aren't the sportiest of all tires or are V rated, the Goodyear Assurance TripleTred have a very good rating on the site, and also won consumer reports best buy tire.

plus, they have a 130k km treadwear rating, comparing to the 512 which apparently only has a 30k mile rating...or like 50k km, gotta think about that too! They handled excellent in the snow this past winter.
Brampalea tire has a very good price on them, in brampton..i got Green & Ross to PM:cheesygri

Tires are very opinion based... but I'll try to offer some help:
The Michelin Radial X are what you are looking for. The have awesome review on consumer report. But you have to buy them from Costco (however, till the end of the month, they are $60.00 off)
The Michelin Harmony are 2nd choice.
This is for all season tires with snow in mind.
If no snow... (which is not what you are looking for) go with the Yokohama Avid TRZ. Top rated all round tire from Consumer report.

i have theese tires.. i have them all year long.. then again. it does not snow much in victoria.. 1-2 days a year max.. a few inches of snow is enough to paralyze the city..
other wise, they have neem great.. much better than the bridgestone RE92 that came stock

I agree as well. Falken Ziex ZE512 are good tires. I was actually looking at the same tires last year but picked a different brand. I read a comparision review on the internet between both Falken Ziex ZE512 and Yokohama Avid TRZ. For my area, I definitely need winter tires which I have (Toyo Garit HT), but it's nice to have an all-season that can handle snow as well. My choice was the Yokohama Avid TRZ. It does pretty good in the snow (better than Falken). It was a bit more expensive than the Falken but I think it equals when you factor in that Yokohama Avid TRZ has better treadlife than Falken Ziex ZE512.

Have these tires as well in 215/45/17, and yes they are great tires for the price. Excellent in both dry and wet, but they seriously suck in snow.
Also, these tires wear out fairly fast, tread life is quite short.

these are terrible in snow, i dont suggest you use them in the winter

low tread life, so shouldnt be considered cheap, good value maybe
barely squeezed 3 summers out of them w/ rotation every 10k, tires were bald after roughly 50k
first 2 years excellent tire in the rain
non existent snow traction tho

Ok....so I guess Falkens not the way to go if snow use is important...
What about the Nokian WR's ....are they worth the xtra $$$ ?
Is there another alternative for "all weather" tires?
thanks again

WRs are a bit pricey I paid ~750 tax in at Kal Tire in Whitehorse for 205.15.60s
Plus they have 80,000km warranty on them. If you talk to a sales rep at Kal Tire who's willing to negotiate on price, I bet you can get these tires for $180/tire. Plus they'll rotate/balance for free any time after the install just for being a customer, anywhere in the country; not bad for the extra $ that Kal Tire charges.
Solid tires for winter driving, gave me peace of mind driving around the Yukon in the dead of winter and all the way down to Saskatchewan. Highly recommended investment if you can spare the dough.

If you are looking for Falkens they are good tires... but I would suggest you get another set of tires for winter.
They are not the greatest in winter but are ok with you take it nice and slow.
I have a set on my teg right now and the best bang for the buck. I paid $380 installed for 205.50.15

Kumho Touring A/S 795
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Touring+A%2FS+795
You should be able to get them for about $110 each installed. Excellent wet, dry and winter performance. I love mine.

Best all season tires good on snow too. I had done a research on that and it turn out to be Michelin Hydroedge. Best on rainy days pretty good on snow. Rated over 120k. Problem is expensive.
The other one I'll consider is Goodyear TripleTred. A bit cheaper.

Falken 512's are great, espeically u can pick them up @ a
really really good price....many places in GTA sells them really cheap~
i have Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S 215/25/18 and they were
good on traction durin' the first winter....
then again, if you have the Cash....get winter tires....
no all-season tires can match winter tires in winter...

Bought the Falkens a few montsh ago. So far so good. But notice that there are now black tire tread marks on my driveway. Only with those tires. Anyone else have that problem? Rubber melting?

I have Nokian WR on my Sienna and they've been great. Drove like regular winter tires the past winter. The WRs are better in every aspect than the stock Dunlop P400 except a tiny bit of vibration/noise can be felt at certain speed and condition. The WR handling is better (H-rated) and they are going to last longer as well. They are very logical choice for us since we don't put a lot of km's on the van. If this set would last 5 years, I can't really ask for more.

Currently using the goodyear tripletred's. Great dry/wet handling and not too bad in light snow.

Not all tire stores carry Kumho. I got mine from a place in Ajax.
