My sister just realized that her driver's licence (G class) expired since oct 06 (6 mts ago) She doesn't reacall receiving any notice in the mail to renew it although it might of been overlooked. Does she now have to start all over again from a G1 class. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chances are, she misplaced it. Doesn't matter - the onus is on her to renew her licence, not on the MTO to provider her with a reminder or a form.

Get her to an MTO office and renew the licence. It's not a problem, and she does not start from ground zero.

But it would not be good for her to be pulled over before she renews.

"You should receive a renewal application or postcard in the mail to the last address registered on the ministry's database approximately 60 to 90 days prior to your driver's licence expiry date. If you do not receive or have lost a renewal application, a new one can be printed, and your licence renewed while you wait, at any Driver & Vehicle Licence Issuing Office. You can renew an expired driver's licence, without taking tests, within one year of the licence expiry date.

If a driver's licence has been invalid (expired, cancelled or suspended) for more than one, but fewer than three years, you must visit a DriveTest centre to complete a vision test. If your licence has invalid for more than three years, you must pass vision, knowledge and road tests. If your licence has been invalid for over three years but not more than 10 years, you have to reapply under Graduated Licensing at a DriveTest centre—the mandatory waiting periods are waived. If your licence has been invalid for over ten years, you have to reapply under graduated licensing at a DriveTest centre and serve all the mandatory waiting periods."

This actually happens to a lot[i] of people, believe it or not.

I've heard from several rent-a-car personnel about how people always come in, try to rent a car and then find out their license has expired. Honestly I personally don't understand how people are so careless... I can tell you the expiry date of my license at any time, the same as I can with any of my credit cards, just from memory. Driver's license is particularly easy because it's just your birthdate so all you have to do is remember the year it expires. Pretty simple if you ask me.

Do not rely on the mail notices as sometimes there might be unseen address mistakes on your license or you might have moved and forgot to update (another very common dl blunder!), or it may just have gotten lost in the mail.

But anyway yeah it happens a lot. There's [i]usually two ways people find out. One is that they go to rent a car and they are told "uh sir/mam... I can't rent the car to you because your license is expired" (this happens a lot as I mentioned!). That's the nice/easy way to find out. Usually the other way is you are pulled over by police for something or other (or get into an accident) and boy that's the wrong time to realise you're driving with an expired license! LOL!

OP, I hope your sister didn't realise through the latter means!

My license expires in 2008, I knew that since the day I got it renewed the last time. And the last time I got it renewed I knew that from the time I had it renewed the time before that... I'd never need to see anything in the mail honestly.

Anyway everyone should say this phrase in their head...

My license expires in _____ :)

Now keep that in your head and don't forget and you'll never end up in the same situation as the OP's sister ;)

I had my license suspended about 15 yrs ago, because I forgot to pay a ticket.
I never got any notification of the suspension, I found out when I was ticketted for speeding 15 over, and I had to wait for the cops to find out if I was ever notified. In the end they let me off, I was 2 blocks from ministry office, and i went and paid up and renewed.

I've no idea why they don't notify you, the whole system is computerized.

All licenses should expire with your plates, on your birthday.Solved.
