How long should the OEM Honda battery last in an '05 Honda odyssey Touring edition? It was purchased early 2005, so shouldn't the battery last longer than two years? Or do Honda OEM batteries just suck?

I only replaced the battery in a 99 1.6EL last fall, and it was only the onset of winter that made me concerned it might not have enough juice left. Eight years. Made me think that Honda used very good batteries.

Being drained completely (anything that would require a boost) will quickly kill your battery's ability to hold a charge. Once or twice is no big deal.

But 2 years? Unless you are absent-minded and remember lots of calls to CAA, something is amiss. Won't Honda do anything for you?

I think the battery is under their 3 year warranty but it is pro-rated. So you might not bother to claim this.

My '90 Accord's battery died after 2.5 year of usage.

do u do stuff like playing music without starting the car a lot?

short travels? like start the car.. then 2-3 minutes.. turn it off..

had the OEM battery run on the car for like 7 years.. honda accord.. never had problem.. especially in the summer..but decided to change the battery since it took quite a while to crank in the winter.

It really depends, most car batteries last between 3-5 Years.

No not necessarily. Does Honda even make their own batts? I remember the one I took out of my sister's Integra was a Panasonic (!) car battery. I guess Pana markets those in Japan (I certainly haven't seen them here!). I'm thinking even if there are Honda-branded ones are OEM'd by someone for them...

Anyway that Panasonic battery lasted a good 7-8 years or so IIRC...

Here's a secret that no one tells you though. Your battery could have been damaged before you bought the car. Batteries die in brand new cars all the time and if it happened in winter there's a chance the electrolyte froze before you ever even saw the car and you just got it like that (later of course not frozen and all charged up but then it wouldn't last very long). The thing is most (but not all) vehicle handling companies don't have special instructions from the manufacturer when a battery dies. So if one dies in the pre-dealer handling chain, it's usually just boosted driven 200m in a lot to somewhere else in the lot and then parked again (with no time for the batt to charge again). Then, in winter if it gets nice and cold the batt can freeze and though it may still work fine it's life may be reduced.

However this is not a definite scenario but just pointing out that is is a possibility. Also it could just be a production defect or poor QC, etc... Or it could have been a problem that occured when you owned the vechicle (bad alternator, something discharged it excessively, you had a current leak, etc.).

Sounds stupid but load testing the battery on a brand new car is not a bad idea, particularly if you've bought a car that's been manufactured in and stored/transported in the winter months because you really have no clue what happened to the vehicle before you got it.

So it could be one of a number of things and there's no way to tell for certain one way or the other (well barring a defect in the battery that would be discovered upon disposal which isn't handled by the manufacturer anyway). Hopefully you get at least some warranty coverage on it--unfortunately that's about the best you can do.

our crv's battery lasted 6 years, it was still going but it was weak at startup in the cold.

They use a pansonic battery.

The battery in my 04 accord died in January, the battery should be 2 years pro-rated as a member mentioned before. I was just out of the warranty period by 6 months, so they calcualted the cost of a new battery form honda would be around $78. They also wanted 75 to check if it was the battery and another 50 to install.

I refused to pay the fees for inspection and installation, after a few minutes of arguing they agreed I would only have to pay for the battery $78

I suggest you go to your honda dealer and see what they can offer you, and go compare prices for a new one. Check out Walmart and Costco as they are well recommended by many people. I got mine from Walmart.

It seems like the batteries in these newer Hondas are not that great, I have read many post about the battery dying within 2-3 years.
