Hi,
I'm looking to buy a porsche 911 from the 1980's, but I'm lacking in detailed background info.
I live in Ontario, so I'd be looking to buy in Ontario.
I've been searching the net, and I've come across a few useful websites. But I'm just wondering if anyone on this board has any experience with these cars that they might be willing to share.
Anyways, I'm mostly interested in specs to look for specifically and price. I'm currently looking to spend between 25,000 and 35,000.
Thanks for all your help!

You're looking at a 930 911, but for your price range I would try to find a 964 (next generation) model year 1989-1994.
Heres a nice article to read:

back then Porsche didn't have watercooler yet, I would worry about the relieability issue.

There's a reason it didn't have a radiator, and it isn't because Porsche wanted to save money.

You better have a big emergency fund if you buy an older Porsche. Repairs and service cost literally cost an arm and a leg - it's that expensive I hear.

Great replies guys, thanks a lot.
I've heard the same about repair costs and whatnot, which is fine since it is an imported sports car, I wouldn't expect it to be cheap.

Air cooled engines are inherently much more reliable because they have far fewer things that could break. Just ask any original VW Bug owners.

I would strongly recommend buying one from the US and importing it. If it's approx 92 or older (depends on build date) you don't have anything to do to import it - if it's less than that, it's still pretty trivial since they mostly comply to CND regs (you'll need DRL and possibly child seat anchors). I think in the US, you might be able to get a 993 (possibly cab) in the price range you are looking at if you look hard enough - you can certainly find a 964.

The most reliable Porsche ever made is the 3.2 Carrera, made from 1984 to 1989. Second most reliable is the SC, made from 1978 to 1983.
You can pick up a very nice Carrera for your price range. There are lots of good cars in Canada. The best part is that they are usually low mileage because most owners store the car for 6 months. For the same reason, Canada is a great place to buy a motorcycle.
Having been around the classic car market for 10 years, I would never, ever buy a car over the Internet or sight unseen. There are so many things you can't see in photographs.
I once bought a '73 911 in Winnipeg. Looked great in the photos. When I got there, it was a piece of junk. In certain spots, you could see the black paint under the yellow re-spray. The dash looked great because he glued an aftermarket dash pad on top. I was so horrified, I drove it straight to a used car dealer and dumped it for half what I paid. Chocked that down to "lesson learned".
I've been around Porsches for a long time. You are making a great choice with an '80s 911. Best bang for the buck in a sports car.
Best piece of advice I can give you - be patient. You'll see a car, think "that's the one" and worry about losing the deal. But another one will come along. There are lots of those cars around because owners tend to be mature, well financed and care about their cars.
PM me if you want more info or have questions.
