Is anyone an expert/knowledgeable in this field? If I have two printed copies and want to find the difference between them (a.k.a proofread), how would I do it? What software can I use? Trying to automate a manual proofreading process...

Is it text (sounds like it to me)? It's much easier if it's converted to text if it is...

can't you scan the printed copy and then go on from there?

it has text and other stuff too, such as figures, tables, symbols...
so, i'm guessing pixel to pixel is the best way to go.

you'd need perfect alignment if u were to test it this way
if you're comparing text, just scan it with OCR

We used to have this advanced high-tech technique called "superimpose the two sheets of paper and hold them up to a bright light". It worked real well. :cheesygri

Thats the best way. Photocopy them on to acetates and place against a backlight.

lol...sounds simple...but let say that the letters are 7 font size, how would you spot a difference between "e" and "c" etc.? And wouldn't this method make you go through the whole document anyways (therefore = proofreading?)?
btw, what are acetates? overhead paper?

I had a text program on the old Amiga computer (Cygnus ED if I recall correctly) that compared two files and showed the diffs.. it used a rexx macro. The closest thing I've found on the PC is NotePad ++ and with a macro, I'm sure it's possible. Look toward the programming field, most of those guys could use this function.
I went on Source Forge looking for the macro.. it's not yet developed for Notepad ++ but almost unanimous agreement for a compare function was http://winmerge.org/2.6/index.php, OTH is you're looking for image comparison software, then your hunt will be interesting.
