Not too bad. For under $800.
The time i went to japan on a cheap airline ticket was with UA as well. It was $600 taxes in. Mind you, that was the yaer of the sars breakout and all the airlines where losing money as no one wanted to goto asia so they were discounting tickets.
It was in may...greatest cheap trip ever. Two weeks, went to korea and japan Funny how when people ask where i was from and when i said Toronto, they were a bit nervous as it was the 2nd worst breakout outside of asia.

I wish the departure date is the end of April, that's when my exams finish!
Does anyone know any good deals (<$1000) from Toronto to HK or Japan? I did some comparison shopping and most are >$1000...

Couple years ago I wanted to book a TOronto - NYC flight with them. Nice staff, but the price was misleading considering their window display clearly said "TORONTO - NEW YORK CITY $199".
That didnt' include taxes and fees which were basically another $200. And the flight was into NEWARK, not New York.
Granted, I ended up paying pretty much the same price directly through Air Canada, but I was not pleased being mislead like that.

I hate to say it, but Toronto is the worst airport ever.. Whenever possible, I always fly from Buffalo. T.O always gouges on taxes, and unless work is paying for the ticket, I avoid Toronto like the SARS.
If the ticket didn't force you to come back a week later, I would say this was a hot deal. For same price or a little more, you could fly from Buffalo and have an open return.
Also, unless the flight is direct from T.O, chances are you are going to have to change over at some airport in the USA anyways.. :(

I've booked a couple of last minute deals through Flight Centre in the past, both pretty positive. Very easy process, just phone them up or book online, they'll send you confirmation, then you can arrange to pick up either at one of their local offices, or at the airport.
BTW, you can always find one of the best 'last minute' deals at FlightCentre.

A few money-saving comments...
-This is a pretty good price indeed. I think I paid $528+taxes in 2005 when going Toronto to Nagoya.
-Staying in hostels is something I recommend. I stayed in about a half-dozen hostels in Japan, and they're a fraction of the price of a hotel, and give you more of a chance to actually meet people. In Tokyo I stayed at this place:
http://www.tokyo-ih.jp/en/
... which is on the 18th & 19th floor of an office tower right beside the Iidabashi train station (2 stations west of the main Tokyo train station). Very convenient. They used to be listed on
http://www.jyh.or.jp/english/index.html
But it looks like they've splintered off into another youth-hostel site, which is less convenient as there's no map on the English page.
http://web.kyoto-inet.or.jp/org/key-yh/kouei%20YH/kouei%20YHe.htm
Yet another good hostel, in Kyoto this time, is K's House:
http://www.kshouse.jp/
You should be able to get a 7-day all-you-can-travel train pass for around $300 or so from JTB in Toronto (see http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en001.html). If you're just going to see Tokyo and the immediate surroundings, this might seem like overkill, but if you're traveling much, you'd use up $300 in train tickets very quickly. (A round trip to Osaka alone will cost $280, for a trip that's three hours each way).
Useful link for travelling in Japan: http://grace.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi... it figures out how to get you from place to place.

hmm not as hot as this deal that comes out to $775 after taxes but tokyo tours (tokyotours.ca or downtown toronto) has American Craplines tickets to tokyo for $880 all inclusive if i recall correctly. i usually buy my tickets with them but this year i found a direct flight from toronto to tokyo via air canada leaving on may 1st for only $985 all in. the $100 extra was worth it just to avoid the states let alone the 3+ hour wait in chicago and the extra flight time involved.

ouch, pretty pricey. flight centre is a pretty expensive place and they dont usually price match if the difference between their prices and another price is more than $100 according to what i was told by one of their employees.
anyways i found a flight from ottawa to tokyo via air canada for $1118.85 (incl taxes) from august 15 to sept 13 at escapes.ca
not sure if there will be anything much cheaper than that during that period
