heya all,

My girl and I are excited to move in together to our first condo in North York next month... so now's the time to plan/order all the utilities.... INTERNET and TV being most important for me!

So far we've decided to get Bell phone and ExpressVu TV as a bundled package to hopefully save cash and retain my GF's current phone number (not overly interested in VOIP right now)

Anyways, we THOUGHT of going with sympatico high speed (I'm an AVID torrent user) and need reliable and consistent high speed. But have recently come across these other DSL ISPs through this website http://www.canadianisp.com/cgi-bin/ispsearch.cgi
... which appear to offer the same speeds as sympatico but at a LOWER price and most importantly NO DL/UL CAP!

Some companies I've looked at so far "Cybernet Communications Inc" and "TekSavvy Solutions Inc."

Are these companies even worthwhile looking into for the extra savings and hopes of not facing DL/UL limitations?

Thanks all for those who have any input/experiences with this sort of situation!

Really eh?!
Thanks for the input... do they really care what phone provider you're with?

I want to switch to them too but I don't like the fact that I have to buy my own modem (quite pricey) and filters...so I'll stick with my current provider...

see.. thats another aspet... I would actually be quite interested in buying my own modem to avoid the rental fees... they seem relatively cheep on ebay from what I see....
I'm currently eyeing a linksys one for like 30 bucks right now... sorry for my ignorance, but is there anything special I should be looking for in purchasing a DSL modem?

And what are these filters you speak of?

Any and all input is greatly appreciated everyone...thanks so far

Hmmm....can you buy any DSL modem and use it on teksavvy? I just hate having to buy hardware just to switch providers...what if I dont't like them? I get stuck with the hardware...

Yes you can. Check the Teksavvy thread, it's very informative.

You can go to Canada Computers and buy a 2Wire modem for 22.99. And about the filters, all you have to do is call up any Bell World Store...yes the actual store and just ask if they have filters available..most likelt they do and they will give you some with splitters for free no questions asked.. that's what I did and they gave me 6 filters and 2 splitters..no questions.

Wouldn't such a cheap modem be pretty crappy? Would I get good speeds? Sorry I'm hijacking the thread but I'm sure the OP is interested in this too :D

Not really.. many ppl have been using this modem for TekSavvy with relatively good results.

You should go to www.dslreports.com

There you will find a TekSavvy forum and there are many Teksavvy technicians that post there regularly. There's also a 2Wire Forum too.

I've been having some problems but I think it's the wiring in my house :(

TekSavvy is the solution. I use them both in Toronto and at my cottage in Barrie. You don't need one of those $100 modems to enjoy the benefits of their service.
