new laptop

hey guys,

I just got a new laptop last night and I want to take really good care of it and also maximize the battery power.

Its a sony vaio vgn-n130g centrino duo core

I was reading on some other forums about CHC but i dont know what that is.

Any tips guys?

CHC or RMClock programs will allow you to undervolt your laptop CPU to maximize battery power. The thing is, with the Core Duo processors, they are hardware locked to go down to 0.950V at the lowest.

I have the same laptop as you. The optimum setting I found was to run it at 0.950V at full speed, and it was stable.

I think you should undervolt it, and if your brave, put aftermarket thermal paste on the cpu chip.

Also try to use it on a desk as much as u can, other than ur lap when u do.

For the battery, take it out of the laptop when it's not in use. When you know you are not going to use the battery for a while, keep it charged at 40%.

Why so absolute and why 40%?

I also read that battery technologies are at a point where it's intelligent enough and miscalibration is a thing of the past. You no longer need to worry about the battery when the AC plug is in use. This according to something I read regarding the Apple notebooks so it may not pertain to PC counterparts.

one more question guys

is it ok to leave the laptop on for excessive amounts of time plugged in? I had the habit of leavin my pc on most of the day and it has now transferred to my laptop.

I leave it on the desk and is always plugged in, and ive made the screen turn off after 20 mins of idling.

my old tablet was used as a bittorrent machine... so it was on for weeks at the time.... no problems here... (heck i don't even have an aftermarket laptop cooler)

oh.. the battery is in it all the time too.... i'm not too worried about it wearing out or counting how many recharge cycles left ;) ... but you never know when the power will blackout... so leaving in there = UPS :)
