Are stores and restaurants allowed to charge 7% GST? I was at a restaurant the other night and was looking over the receipt today. It did not list the percentages, just the tax name. I did some math and found they are either charging 7% GST, 9% PST, or have the item cost wrong. The tip was already covered in cash.
If I was eating in, got the bill, and found they were charing the old GST rate, and the owner refuses to correct it- what could be done?

there was a thread about this some time ago. You can call some government office and complain(obviously what this restaurant doing is illegal).

Remember that PST on beer, wine, and liquor in restaurants/bars is 10% instead of 8%.

Most likely, when it comes to remmittance time, they're only sending in equivalent to the 6% current rate & pocketing the 1%. Call the gov't to complain!!!!

strangely enough, I just had an ebay seller complain about this...
he had asked for 15% tax on a $5 sale... I adjusted the tax the 5 cents and the guy was like "wtf"...

Was the seller from the east coast? Is HST still 15%?

HST is 14%, and you don't charge HST to a guy in Toronto.
