what do you consider general viewing?
Forrest gump isn't a movie you can really watch with kids since its pretty graphic.

The Shawshank redemption.

One of the greatest stories on film.

Another good one? Field of Dreams.

Ray

It just one of those movies I constantly watch, as there is something about Ray that's just... uh whats the word... just really how he defied the world by making a great name for himself even with the disabilities he had.

Dead Poet's Society is another good one.

There will never be a best "general viewing" movie.

I personally didn't like Forest gump, it was pretty boring to me.

On the other hand I loved Walk The Line, but I'm sure a bunch of people would be quick to say they loved gump and hated walk the line.

It's all personal opinion.

Graphic!!!???? Forest Gump????

Where What?

Scenes of war, people dying, drug use, sex scenes. It's all a pretty tame PG-13 but still not ideal family viewing.

Princess Bride.

It has everything, from young to old it appeals to every age group.

A love story
Revenge
Action
Pirates
Rodents of Unusual size

It has everything ever needed in a movie.

I don't think a lot of people are getting what the OP means...

I was tempted to disagree with Forrest but after thinking about it, I couldn't come up with anything better to fit the mold.

Princess Bride is close but it can be classified as fantasy so..

Based on my understanding of the exact question asked, I would probably have to go with....

The Shawshank Redemption

However... close runner-ups would be Princess Bride and Forrest Gump...

All 3 are great movies!

I don't re-watch movies much, but Shawshank Redemption, Princess Bride and Blues Brothers are the exceptions.

I guess depending on perspectives The Godfather could be considered

I guess if your perspective believes 2007 - 1973 < 20, then yes, The Godfather could be considered.
