I've seen adds both here and on craigslist where people are selling these used vehicles for 11-14k with mileage near and above 100k. Anyone have REAL experience buying one of these used, and what one should expect to pay?

If the price bothers you, you might want to get a Protege sedan for next to nothing + add a Thule or equivalent roof coffin when needed. That's what I did a few years ago.

for a 2003, reasonable KM (under 100k km), 12000$ around...
for a 2002, over 120,000km...maybe 8500$

Are you from Toronto? Check Toprotege.com forum,
there might be some good prices out there,

i sold mine @ $6500 to a dealership, 02 MP5 140 000km/yellow/auto/AC/Sunroof -lowered,
brembo upgrades, Gun metal 16" wheel... 2 weeks later
it was up @ a whole sale for $9000~

good luck!

The 6500 marks sounds more reasonable. I expected the cars with more than 100-120k to run 7-9k.

But the price on the low mileage cars seems a bit excessive. My cousin told me that dealerships were sellijng off the last proteje's for 14K brand new when the mazda 3 just came out.

Mazda selling the 2003.5 MSP for 23k with free Xbox after few months when MRSP is 27k.
Those owners paid 27k for it pissed off badly.

They do hold their value well, sold my mp5 last fall with 120k, 2002 for over 10k. At the time they were asking 14-15k for it.

Check out toprotege.com, lots of resources and the buy/sell forum will have soem forsale.

+1 for holding their value well.

We sold my wife's 2002 P5 two years ago this April. It was white, moonroof, A/C, 5 speed, and had only 24,000km on it. We had multiple offers over $16,000 for it (ended up getting $16,500).

Still though, it's a great car. Built in Japan, loads of space in the back, peppy motor, and had no problems whatsoever with ours.
