Moved into a townhouse that doesn't have central air installed. Need to get one for the summer. Anyone know what kind/brand I should get? (1700 sqft) and most importantly a good installer with decent price.

I'm located in Richmond Hill Ontario, so a local place would be great as well.

Thank you!!

Get one that has been in business for a long time. Find one that has done business with town homes as well. Town homes present a problem because the A/C unit is in the living space of the yard and there are potential solutions specific to them.
Get one that can work on your furnace as well (considering part of the A/C is the coil in the furnace. Get someone close by so it does not take long to come and fix it if it causes problems. Get one that will "tune" your duct work for you as well. This is so you don't freeze in the basement and heat no cold air (or heat) in the upstairs bedrooms. You can do this yourself, by opening and closing the levers in the ducts. (this is not an instantaneous result, you need to make the changes and wait for a few days, even a week, to feel results)
Also, if you don't have it, think of getting relay on your furnace that will allow the fan to stay on at a very low speed even if the A/C or furnace is not on. It just equalizes the temperatures better in the house.

High Life is very good, they install our Carrier, and we are very satisfied, I recommended them to several friends and they are very satisfied also. The only problem is that they mainly install Carrier and Lennox, which is more pricey than other brands like Keeprite.

Carrier's are nice, but why pay that price when you can by the same thing for cheaper price. Go with Pane, its completely made by Carrier, so is Bryant!!!! you are getting the exact same product at a lesser cost!!!!

Sorry, they're simply all made in the one same plant in the southern U.S. ( Tennessee ) - they aren't the " exact same " product. btw - we got a Carrier 3.5 ton A/C and new Carrier furnace put in last year - and what a difference ! I'd also put as much ( if not more ) worry into who is going to do a " quality install " than choosing the unit itself .

After getting countless quotes we had it installed by company called A-1...family run business since 1967.

Does High Life have a website?

I got this flyer in the mail from this AC company called Convertible Air Systems. They are also family owned and operated since 1967.

www.convertibleair.com anyone have any experience with them?

Thanks

Carrier, Pane & Bryant are all the same company, just like Hyundai & Kia, Honda & Acura, Toyota & Lexus. Every tech that I've spoken to has said to me if you lift up the cover on the a/c, they're litterally all the same parts!!!
These companies (carrier, inparticular) cannot just rely on the high priced market to survive they also need to target the med. priced market and low end market. The economies of scale are at their fingertips, so why not take advantage of it!!

Don't waste your money on buying a quiet unit. Your neighbours won't and since you're in a townhouse, you'll hear your neighbours' a/c instead of yours.

Yes, noise is an issue, but shape is another. Typically a townhouse has two windows for the basement, a slim or compact A/C will not cover up that precious light source. Perhaps one that can be completely enclosed without fear of overheating or freezing up (requires less air flow than a normal unit), just that sort of thing.
