Here's the situation:
My g/f had a gym membership for the last 2 years. Last year she signed another contract for 1 year and paid FULLY for the entire year. The contract states the renewal date is april 1 2007.
This year she decided to cancel the membership. (Note the gym never sent her any notice of renewal30 days prio like it states in her contract). She went in on the 8th of march and cancelled the membership. The cancellation date on the contract says effective then 20th of march.
Yesterday she got her visa bill and there is 2 charges for her membership on the 3rd of March and 26th of March. So she called the gym and they told her she would have to go down to gym to sort it out. She already wasted 45 mintues cancelling the membership in the first place. Keep in mind they should not have charged her anything in the first place since she paid up until april 1st and they still put through a charge after the effective cancellation date.
She is going to call visa and fax them the information to do a charge back. I remember back a few years ago, there was a big to do about gym memberships in ontario and I remember there was a place to file a complaint with. Does anybody know where?

I filed a complaint through BBB against Premier Fitness and it got sorted out. Took some time, but got sorted out so that I was happy.

Which gym is this?
I have had similar experience with another one, where I cancelled the membership early in Dec 06 and still get charged till Mar 07. Fortunately the gym membership is done via payroll deduction and so I got someone from my company to sort it out.

If you've got the cancellation documented, the visa dispute should take care of it, and then you can give them the one finger salute.

Stupid gyms their almost all crooks! I go to my local town sponsored gym. It's not as fancy and the girls aren't as hot as the ones you'll see at Extreme but at least my credit card is not getting a work out too :)

My g/f is going to fax all the documents to visa on Monday. She tried to deal with them but they practically hung up on her on the phone when they told her she would have to come in. From the responses so far, it doesn't sound like there is anywhere else to complain to except the BBB which I think she is going to do.

Here's an idea for anyone dealing with a gym issue. Keep going to the gym, working out and pumping iron. As your muscles and strength abilities improve stop by the office after each workout and tell them to "imagine how bad it's going to hurt when you beat the living shite out of them when you hit 220lbs" which should be in another day or so  .

And you think they lack of staff who are >= 220lbs with all the muscles?

For anybody in ontario who is interested (not just fitness) I about a link to the goverment agency for consumer protection. Here's the link

Man. How often does this happen?
I cancelled mine w/o problems at Premier many years ago and didn't have issues. But this is what I keep hearing people complain about. They really have a bad reputation for this.
If I were to join a gym again, I would never have them do any kind of automatic deduction from chequing account or credit card. I rather bring them cash to pay for the entire year and be protected against this fraud that happens way too often.

Guys, What I did when Premier Fitness did not want to credit my account for an early termination is I wrote a letter to the President and faxed it daily.... on the second day someone called me back and said my account was credited.
Let me know if u want the main fax number.
