Berber's have come a long way since the old looped styles that were in basements. There is quite a selection out there now...patterned and colours galore.

What's great about Berber is that it is quite durable so it's great in high traffic areas such as hallways and family rooms!

Our playroom has a berber, it was installed about 8 years ago, and considering the abuse it takes, looks great!!

Pile carpets are more standard and will push down eventually.

IMO it's a matter of taste these days, as long as you put decent underpad under it both are a great solution!

Most people get berber because it is trendy....it is nice but people get it because it's trendy.

Hardly 'trendy' when it's been around for decades...IMO

Berbers are indeed very "trendy" these days but they have their place. A good flooring store will not sell you a berber for stairs or for a room over 12 feet wide for standard goods (there is 15 foot widths available as well for a price). They will also tell you that you should not ever use a beater bar attachment on a berber carpet. Why no stairs? Berbers, because they are a continuous loop that is relatively thick do not lend themselves to upholstery work like stairs, without the backing of the carpet showing. Why not in rooms over 12 feet wide? Berbers do not generally seam well. Any seams are also very prone to loose pile threads. If the pile thread gets caught in a beater bar attachment or a by a pet it will pull across the entire room....

Well, I did not know that. Thanks for the excellent information. I have berber on the whole lower floor. I don't like it, but it's in good condition and I'm not changing it any time soon.
