My girlfriend recently applied for a TD Student Visa, with a $500 limit, and got rejected. She just turned 20, and made over $5000 last summer. They didn't give her a reason, and I honestly can't think of one. She made even more money the year before, but due to school, she wasn't able to work as many hours.

She currently is unemployed because she is away at school, and maybe that has something to do with it, but I've seen people get credit cards based on far less.

EDIT: She may actually still be on the payroll of the place she worked for last summer.

Anyone have any insight into this?

Talk to TD, maybe they are willing to give your gf a card if she put down some money first, in order words, get a secured credit card.

if she is a full-time student and has NO credit history or good credit she should get approved. atleast for $500. Go and see someone in the branch, don't apply online.

if that doesnt work, go to MBNA, lol they approve everyone.

Consider yourself lucky. TD has atrocious customer service so I'd stay well clear of them. I used to have a USD Visa with TD and it took TEN MONTHS to sortout a chargeback (all my chargebacks on my MC cards took ten DAYS). I'm having other problems with TD at the moment that I can't share the details of, but it seems bad customer service runs rampant through this company.

If you want a good bank card, get the BMO Mosaik. It's student friendly, so it should be a cinch to get approved, plus it has decent rewards as well.

I applied online, and I have a chequing account with TD. I'm also full time student, no job, no credit history, got my card in a few days after applying.

They probbly messed up with the application. Student Visa's are dead easy to get, just have be a student and not have ****** credit.

When I opened my TD account four years ago, with minimal income, they pre-approved me for a TD Green with a $500 limit. I just had to show them that I was enrolled at a university.

As far as I know, they offer that card to pretty much any student.

MBNA rejected me twice, while TD, amex and PC all gave me a card each !!

Yes I got their card and I am a full time grad student. But I applied for that after using my TD card for 6 months. Not sure if this made a difference.

That's the first time I've heard of them rejecting anyone.

I just signed up with them on campus cause I wanted a UBC card, but then they sent me two. Since they also sponsor StudentAwards, of which I'm a member of, I got a StudentAwards card as well.

Did you give MBNA your SIN? It's possible they might not have been able to find your credit file. Or they found someone with the same name which doesn't have good credit.

Banking with PC/TD, they will generally have you SIN on file already so they can make sure they pull up the right file.

This can happen from time to time.
