I'm looking to make a list of significantly popular and worthwhile video game and even anime soundtracks for work. I'm in the process of looking, but it would be interesting to hear what everyone on RFD has to contribute. So please list some good ones, if possible!

Also check out http://gh.ffshrine.org/ for soundtracks for a ton of games (the ones listed above aren't featured there unfortunately, but they can be easily found elsewhere)

Planescape: Torment. It's an older RPG (late 90s) but it has an incredible soundtrack.
The Total War games (Shogun, Medieval, Rome) also have really nice music.

I have a large selection, my question is, what type of music? Does it have to be OST, or will licensed soundtrack count too?
With game soundtracks, you really need to know the reference material to make any sort of emotional judgement. Shadow of the Colossus was excellent, but without playing the game, it would be just meh.

I think it really depends on what kind of music you are looking for. LIke you looking for old school, lively, moody, relaxing...etc?
Some just plain old nice music I would suggest would be .hack//sign

you're not allowed to use other people's works for commercial purposes
but if you're just making a LIST, there's tons of websites that list popular game music already
personally, i've got over 25K pieces of music in my GAME MUSIC category but the only one i keep going back to is music from Final Fantasy

Blur - Song 2
One of my favorite game songs from FIFA 98 - Road to WorldCup I think.

Its more of a list I suppose.
I wanted to take down some suggestions since I can't name an awful lot from the top of my head.

in that case, the following composers are well known and recommended by me:
Nobuo Uematsu
Yoko Kanno
Yoko Shimomura
that's all i can name off the top of my head.... google their names and you'll probably find a list of their works
(as you can see, i'm heavily biased towards japanese composers ;) )
