are you comfortable eat alone at restaurant?
i guess it's not too bad if you can get over the awkwardness of the waiter thinking you’re some kind of loser who got stood up. it's fun to see how people react when you are breaking social taboos.
this is the goal on my list for next month:lol:

yeah i do it.
I think you gotta be really insecure to feel weird about... If your hungry, you gotta eat!
its a different story if its friday night and you think to yourself "oh..... I think im gonna treat myself to a nice resturant" instead of calling up your friends or something.
THAT would be a lil weird... Unless your one of those people that would go across town for some weird craving. :cheesygri

If I'm not hungry - no.

It actually depends on which restaurant. At McD, that's pretty common and other burger joints. But at Jack Astor type of restaurants, where everyone is with someone or in groups, it can be awkward.

I had a major problem and I'm slowly getting better. It used to be that I could not go eat by myself but I'm getting better. What I did was load shows into my phone so that I'm not focusing on the people and I'm having a good time while eating. Those were my training wheels. Now I can go eat and enjoy my meals.
I'm not a loner or anything, it was just I was afraid of the odd time that I had to eat by myself in public.
It's all in your head son.
Exactly, take a look around, there are many that eat alone, no biggie.

I generally go with my buddies...or my families.
Have I ever gone by myself, nope. Who does?
I associate eating out with celebration, and I celebrate with other people

Doesn't have to be associated with celebration. Some of us have to go eat out because there's no choice, take a look at my new schedule:
Breakfast at home, then school, then downtown, grab lunch there and then straight to work. This means I'm always somewhere eating alone everyday. At first I was uncomfortable but now I'm used to it.

Maybe I'll drink at a bar alone, but not eat alone at a restaurant. I'll probably have the food to go and eat at home.

sometimes you're out by yourself and you gotta eat...you wait to go home and eat instead of just eating out by yourself because you're not celebrating anything? kinda weird if you ask me...eating is eating who cares where or who you do it with as long as you're enjoying it

you should really specify time and place,
jack astors, milestone, kelseys, boston pizza, on a friday night (not at the bar) by yourself is weird and akward to every extent.
mcds friday night is fine.

Only if it's fast food or an asian restaurant.
(I dunno, it feels less awkward for some reason because I'm not asian so I would be an outsider there anyway.)

I've gone to restaurants like AYCE sushi and Mandarin for dinner alone. Nothing wrong with it. I'll just take a good book or work, and work while eating.
The point of going to somewhere like that is that you like the food. [not that, to be honest, I enjoy Mandarin, but it's convenient.]

this is the goal on my list for next month:lol:Weekdays when you're traveling for work, there's nothing worse than eating 4 nights in a row at the hotel's restaurant. So you go out, take a book to read between courses and try out a few other places. Nothing wrong with that.
Also, who cares what the waiter thinks anyway ?
And you'd call that a social taboo ?

Never a problem for me really especially if there is some nice eye candy including the waiteresses inside the restaurant or outside walking by the windows on the sidewalks to fill my eyes appetite as i fill my stomach or maybe just read a magazine or newspaper if the table is big enough to allow this.:cheesygri

I dont' think I have any problem to eat with myself at any restaurant. The point is I can concentrate on my tasty food, worry free of starting a new topic, making other people happy.
You can have sex with yourself, why not dinner? :D

The OP is not alone with this issue. Working away from home, I know many colleagues that had similar problems. Eventually the started going down to the bar in the hotel, then eventually could eat in the restaurant.
I have never had a problem. From Ruth Chris' to Swiss Chalet it does not matter.

I prefer quiet places where there's not many people to begin with. Even if there is, to a certain extent, I could really care less. At first I did, but then I asked myself why? Why would I care what a bunch of strangers thought of me?
Granted I do have little friends in a new city whom I can go out with, but people have a mouth and a mind of their own and can say or think any which way as they like. I can't change that nor do I really care.

Fast food doesnt count IMO.
But I occasionally will do it at nicer restaurants as well, as I travel out of province (usually alone) almost every month for work. During which time I can expense up to $65. a day so theres no way I'm passing that up just because of shyness!
So I sometimes bring a magazine or paper to read, or ask for a seat near a tv monitor if a game is on.

Anyone ever gone to a movie theatre by themselves? I'm pretty secure with myself but that's something i have not done yet....

What is wrong with eating alone? The more people you have the more nonsense you are going to be talking. I go out to eat. If I wanted to socialize I will go to a bar at night.

Well, considering the fact that my wife is not with me when I go to lunch at work, and my coworkers all pack their lunch, I have no problems eating by myself. I grab a book to read and eat away. I would feel more awkward if I didn't have a book to read as I'd just sit there and twiddle my thumbs while I waited for the food. But regardless, eating alone does not make me nervous or feel awkward in the least. I've done it for years now on my work lunchbreak.

of course! i do it all the time...esp downtown! nothing wrong with it ... to be honest i'd rather eat alone sometimes than having to MAKE insincere conversation with someone to "fill the air"..... and i like that i dont have to wait for anyone to finish eating if i have other things to do....back in univ, i used to go for sushi and chinese food on bloor street by myself or lounge around a cafe with some coffee or Hot Choc...i enjoy the solitude, it gives me time to myself and time to think....esp in the fall :)
have never gone to see a movie alone though...not sure that i would either.

Once.. just once, i thought i'd give going out by myself a try. took the bus to Square 1 (i was in grade.. 9), did a little shopping... saw all the groups (friends, couples, etc) felt so lonely...
Went to have lunch... dunno why.. but went to Jack Astors all by myself >.< Waitress looked at me funny... =( Felt even more lonely.
Never never again. I always call up one of my friends now. Its not that i'm insecure about myself, its just that i'm a social creature and unless i have someone to joke and talk too, life feels so empty

Hmmm eat alone at a fast food restaurant? I do it all the time, especially if I'm at a client site by myself, and have no choice. But I've never done it at a sit down restaurant where someone actually serves me.
Do I find it weird?
- I don't find it weird if it's lunch time
- I may find it a little awkward after work hours (dinner).
edit: An exception would be if you are traveling alone (for business/pleasure) cuz then you really have no choice, and who wants fast food all day!! But to each his/her own!

In addition to going to restaurants alone, I do go to movies alone as well. Often on business, but not always...sometimes just movies that I know that my wife does not want to see....perfect when I don't want to shop for hours upon hours during Christmas....
All in all, some of the ease comes with age (30's)....not too worried what others will think, don't need to be super trendy, who really cares what some yahoo thinks...

I used to feel embarrassed. Started doing business travel, got tired of eating cardboard food as room service. Now I can eat anywhere alone and not feel strange, small and cheap, family restaurants, etc. Only thing I haven't done is dimsum, not much fun as I get full after 3 baskets of food ...
