I notice that in the States the hot dog is relatively popular and have even a few restaurants that cater to selling the hot dog. Why are hot dogs not that big here? Does anyone have a suggestion or know of a restaurant in T.O that specializes in hot dogs. There has to be someplace I can go besides Dairy Queen for a good chilli cheese dog!

Costco $1.99 for a dog and a pop. Can't beat the price. I can't imagine myself going out to a restaurant to order a hotdog LOL

Funny you should start this thread.
I just got back from Chicago and had my first Chicago-style hot dog:
Poppy seed bun
Vienna sausage
Fresh onions
Fresh tomato
Green relish (really neon green)
Mustard
Dill pickle spear
Sport peppers
And a dash of celery salt

If you go to Buffalo check out a brand called Sahlen's, they're a bit of an acquired taste but I love 'em!

that just seems like a Toronto style hot dog...
The one where theres a few dozen condiments and people just load it up with whatever the hell they want.
I remember a family friend from the US visited. He was amazed @ all the different condiments we had on our hot dog stands...
He says where hes from its just ketchup, mustard, relish, and sometimes sour kraut.....

The point is, you go to Wrigley Field or down to the Loop - anywhere in Chicago, this is Chicago-style, right down to the dash of celery salt.
Toronto isn't one single style except that the sausages are propane grilled AND you choose whatever condiments.

There's a "Franks"(?) that's just opened up on the corner of Yonge and (Victoria?)...north of Dundas by a block or so. Anyone been?

Can't beat a Sahlen's dog with Weber's Mustard (also a WNY thing). Sahlen's are the best!

I was a Walden's Galleria not too long ago, there was a place in the food court called Ted's Hotdogs ...... i thought it was odd that a place specializes in selling hot dogs in a mall. Didn't try it but they had foot long dogs which looked kinda gross. Anybody going down this weekend can try it out and tell us about it.

Ted's hot dogs are char-grilled (that's their cachet), otherwise they're pretty uninspiring hot dogs.

I think of the Nathan's Famous Coney Island hot dogs - all beef with sauerkraut...

There used to be the J Kwinter hot dog chain in the malls- at least in Ottawa anyways.
It used to be my favorite.
Now I just sometimes buy from the bbq street vendors or I go to a local sausage shop where they make all natural sausages like turkey and apple and 20 other kinds of sausages!
A lot of the fancy restaurants and bbq carts go to the same place to buy their meat supplies :)
maybe there are some good German or European deli's near you, they usually have good sausages and meats!
