Hi there,

My wife works for Weight Watchers Saturday mornings (reception) and she has been on a serious health kick for about 6 years now. She eats low fat everything (for the most part), lots of veggies (and I mean lots), drinks plenty of water, etc.

Whenver we go out for dinner, I generally tend to choose the place (only because I somehow always tend to pay). I tend to pick places that are tasty, but not necessarily healthy. She has said that the healthiest place I've chosen is Fire and Ice (basically, you choose your protein meat or chicken or seafood selection, then go to a vegetable bar, grab a plate, pile veggies on as high as the plate holds, hand it to a server, who then hands it to the cooks who mix your meat choices with the veggies as well as your choice of sauce. Pretty tasty.

However, my wife has recently mentioned to me that, since she knows I am on this forum, that there must be others who have been to tasty restaurants that server healthy meals that are fresh. She is also looking for a restaurant that has more than just token vegetarian dishes (she is far from vegetarian but does eat a lot of veggies).

I can look online on a search engine or in the phone book, but what I really want are people's recommendations based on their experiences. I know Pickel Barrel has a fair selection of healthy stuff, but I can't really say how fresh their selections are since we've been there a few times where the shrimp was frozen, the veggies cold, the chicken totally not done right). I'm sure there's some "gems" that are not big name restaurants that you may recommend to us. If you know any, please pass along the restaurant name, as well as your thoughts on your experience.

Thank you!

your wife sounds like me :cheesygri ...i too am very health conscious...i eat loads of veggies although i'm not vegetarian/vegan...

if your wife liked fire & ice then you'll probably like "Great Khan Mongolian Grill"...concept is exactly the same except asian-y style & all you can eat (don't know if that ruins the healthy aspect of it)...haven't been there since a few years back but i thought it was good (don't know how it is now though)...it also has some prepared buffet items placed out last i went...

Great Khan Mongolian Grill
4396 Steeles Ave E Unit E1
Markham,ON 905-947-8288

there's also a place by my area..."Sapporo Sushi Restaurant"...doesn't have a lot of vegetarian items but it's a pretty good japanese restaurant that also has korean food items & not all you can eat...staff are very friendly...i usually get the "vegetable roll" - has lettuce, avocado, cucumber...i also get the "bibimbab" - rice in a sizzling pot topped w/ egg, lettuce, red & green peppers, sesame seeds, shitake mushrooms, pickled carrots & radish, some bits of beef....this comes w/ a salad, miso soup & green tea ice cream...

Sapporo Sushi Restaurant
250 Alton Towers Cir
Scarborough, ON M1V 3Z4
416-754-7575

extremely friendly staff...prices aren't bad...i highly recommend! ;)

fire and ice is good for its cost, especially since whatever you don't finish you can take home.

only other remotely healthy type of restaurant i can recommend is a chinese hot pot style AYCE. There's a few, namely one @ Warden/steeles and another I think in commerce Gate's plaza. You get a big pot of water with your choice of one or two soup bases, and pretty much everything you put in is boiled to your tastes. there's a pretty expansive pallette of foods, from the usual meats to eggs and veggies and noodles too.

actually, if you're not into dipping your entire funds into an AYCE you're not sure you will enjoy, may I suggest the one at market village food court? (Kennedy/steeles, same mall as Pacific Mall)
The food court in there has a hot pot system and you can order what you want for the hot pot, and it's pay as you order, so it's not one huge amount for all you can eat.

Reason why I'd say this is healthier is cause you don't get the burnt charcoal like BBQs. It's not even fried, everything you're eating is going to be boiled cleanly (Then added with the flavour of the soup or sauce you pick) or steamed (rice)
