I am just curious where people have had their best pizza? I myself thinks Dante's in Thornhill is the finest pizza that I have ever tried here in Ontario. Anybody agree or disagree with my opinion?

I've tried Dante's once - was helping friends move and they rewarded us with dinner from Dante's. Very tasty pizza - toppings are huge and fresh. I had the meat lover's, and let me tell you, I probably did more damage to my arteries that day than any other day. But the pizza was soooo good.

It's interesting - I had this discussion with my sister last month over a family dinner. My wife and I used to eat 241 Pizza when we were dating - that was OK, but since then, I have discovered Pizzaville and I love it. Still my, favourite is Pizza Hut. All that being said, my sister hates Pizzaville, and she prefers Domino's Pizza.

However, a number of my family (and friends for that matter) can agree that Pizza Pizza is the worst of the chains in terms of least tastiest pizza. The crust is almost always overdone if not burnt. My wife just took our son our for pizza recently and came back with a few slices for me. I said, "oh no, Pizza Pizza. I bet that the crusts are burnt (or hard as a rock). Sure enough, all the crusts were a dark brown/light black and was hardly edible. I don't know why that place is so popular - must be the amount of locations.

I've tried Boston Pizza, and you know what? I don't think it's as good as people say it is. The crust/dough had no flavour at all - it was really bland. The topics were excellent though. Boston Pizza used to have this spinach tomato mushroom cream pasta dish that was delicious - but they discontinued it last year.

I really think there are some hidden gems out there for pizza places. I hit a few spots on my way home now and again (some mom and pop pizza shop in some run down mall) - the pizzas at these places are quite good. Shows you that franchises don't have a monopoly on good food, that's for sure.

There used to be a chain in the Durham area 20 years ago called Pizza Delight that was quite good.

Pizza Delight 20 years ago rocked. I saw one around lately, can't remember where, but i don't think its the same anymore. I like the Gino's in Thunder Bay, not the same in Brampton.

Pizza Delight was good when it was around. Any mom and pop local pizza joint is usually good because they make their pizza in a more traditional way then a franchise does. My town use to have a few mom and pop type pizza places until pizza pizza came and everyone flocked to them. I refuse to eat pizza pizza slices because they taste so horrible, even worse then a pizza from there. I just stick to a small independent franchise that makes the pizza taste like any independet does.

Abruzzos pizza is located on 9010 Yonge st Richmond Hill, the main intersection is Hwy 7 and Yonge, phone # 905 8818222. U can order slices or have a whole one made, they also have great pastas, but be sure to try the fried panzerottis. I would say this place is comparable to Dantes, its also Italian owned and have been in business over 20 yrs.

Gigi's Pizza or was it Pizza Gigi's, its located at the corner of Harbord/Lippincott in downtown Toronto, one block east of Bathurst. The place only sells pizza and pop, nothing else, and they only open from 4pm to like 3am. Damn, I miss living in that neighbourhood.

In Nepean/Ottawa I'd have to say Romeo's pizza on Merivale Rd.
they also have the best donair and have a really good sweet sauce for it!
their restaurant has been there over 25 years:D
-not the cheapest pizza though a small was recently $12 and has 4 slices, but they use sooo much cheese you never need anything extra.
-also yummy homemade baklava, they are almost always sold out of it...

Also Colonade pizza in downtown ottawa, also on Bank st they bought the location of an old burger king and are always super busy!

I'm not a big fan of the crusts, so I prefer the ones @ Mama Pizza.

All their pizzas are thinned crusted, and their toppings are fresh. However I had to wait a very long time for them to make the pizza.

My favorite is their signature potatoe pizzas, but definitely not a healthy diet.

Have to give credits on their wings to, they bake them instead of deep frying, takes longer to cook but it's well worth the wait.

I've never had Domino's, but I'm curious as to why you don't like them.

There is a pizza joint on Yonge between Finch/North York Centre in Toronto that is one of those "real" pizza places - family owned, etc. I was surprised the first time I went there - the pizza crust was so thin, yet the toppings were so thick. You could not eat it in the traditional one handed way - the toppings would just flop over. They told me that real pizza in Italy is actually supposed to be thin-crusted. That I didn't know.

Great thread, I've been a resident of Ontario for ~ 12yrs and still haven't been able to find pizza comparible to that I used to enjoy in Montreal.

+ Thick cheese
+ Abundant toppings

Places like;
+ B&M Pizzaria
+ Pendeli's

The closest I've found so far is Topper's Pizza, however you really have to be on top of them to not skimp on the toppings.

Recommendations would be great, at least it would eliminate (somewhat) me from bringing back 2-3 pizza'a evertime I visit MTL.

I would like to provide a slight twist to this discussion. Anyone consider store-bought frozen pizzas to be a contender for "best Ontario pizza"? I know it's a farshot, and I'm not talking about the Kraft or McCain's pizzas that don't taste very good at all and have no cheese, etc.

Have you guys tried the CostCo pizza? It's not bad, actually and good value for what you get? I realize it can't compete with fresh, but I'll say it right now, I'd rather have a frozen to oven CostCo pizza over a "fresh" Pizza Pizza pizza hands down, any day of the week. I really don't like Pizza Pizza.

My most memorable pizza was at a place in Bewdley, ON.

I don't even know the name of the place but all the locals directed us there when we were there years ago. It is located on the main commercial strip, opposite the docks and parks. We ordered the works and waited 30 minutes while they made it for us.

What made the pizza memorable was that it was loaded with so much topping that every order comes with plates and forks, to eat the stuff that falls off the pizza. One slice was the most any of us could eat cuz there was so much stuff.

If anyone knows the place I am talking about, I would love to know if it is still there, cuz we are going back to Bewdley this summer and would love to visit again.

When I went to Carleton in Ottawa, my roommate and I lived on Eddy's Pizza. They had a pizza there called the "Super Special" and it had every meat imaginable on it: pepperoni, real bacon, ground sausage, smoked meat(!) and every slice had half a meatball on it.

My god... it was soooooo good. Haven't had anything like it since.

In the GTA, Dante's is probably the best, but it's quite expensive!

i really like 2 pizza places in burlington, ones called napolis and the other i can not remember. They are run similarly and both serve fried rice:-0. 4 toppings on each and 2 x-large pizza's are 18.99 and are awesome. They have a sweeter sauce then most, but i love it non the less. Fav chain pizza place however has to go to either 2 4 1 or ginos.

Anyone know what happened to cause a change in how pizza slices are made from places like Pizza Pizza and 241? They used to be all New York style where the slices were actually foldable. You definitely can't do that anymore considering the crust is hard as a rock and usually burnt.

As a kid, I used to always save up my money to get a slice of pizza from Pizza Pizza, the quality probably went down as soon as they started expanding the amount of franchises around. Then again, I think pizza everywhere has downgraded in quality.

If theres one thing I cant stand is non italians trying to make italian pizza.. the place may be owned by italians but take a look in the kitchen sometime. Now now...there is no way anyone can convince me that Dante's is on the same level as Pizza Pizza. Pizza Pizza is absolutely disgusting.

Interesting point about non-Italians making pizza. If nothing else, we may be used to a more North Americanized style of pizza, sort of like how my buddy told me that Mandarin is authentic Chinese food and I started laughing...to him, that's what it is. To me, it's something different. I'm not Italian, so I can't speak on the authenticity of the pizza, but from my taste buds' perspective, Dante's is pretty good.

Then again, who's to say that truly "authentic" food tastes any better? Food is pretty subjective. There are some Chinese food dishes which are absolutely disgusting to me, and I'd rather have fake Chinese like chicken balls and such over chicken feet and pig's stomach. I think the difference would be something comparable like fried noodles - fried noodles made at Ho Lee Chow is sub-par, in my view, compared to authentic fried noodles done at any real Chinese restaurant. But if someone likes Ho Lee Chow fried noodles, I'm not going to bash them - that's what their palate prefers.

I don't eat a lot of pizza so if I do get it, I only get a slice.

I like thin crusted pizza with specialty toppings. I like Terroni and Amato and I think Mama's pizza is ok.

If I'm really hungry and desperate, I'll go to Pizza Pizza and get a slice of their mediterranean vegetarian or mango chicken pizza. :)

In Ottawa, the pizza place at the St Laurent Shopping Centre food court has always had great New York style pizza. Kinda pricy though.

I'd compare their pizza to Sbarros or however you spell it, unfortunately there aren't any of those here.

On the store bought topic, the chicken pizza from m&m's that has bacon and tomato on it and a cream sauce is very very good for store bought. Lots of bacon usually and a fair amount of chicken.

I used to eat Abruzzo's pizza all the time when travelling up to "The Hill".
I would call them up, place an order, and then leave willowdale and head up there by the time I get there, the pizza is cooked and we pick it up, then we get to our place in Richmond hill and eat it up.

Lately, I passed by looking for a slice of pizza and all I found was the place had somehow turned into an Arab or Persian/Iranian place. Well I didn't quite know at first because I saw the Green, White and RED colours on the window (i was not wearing my glasses at the time) so I parked my car in the plaza, went in, but Once I saw the arabic writing on the signs and stuff, I kinda knew it was OVER for Abruzzo pizza. RIP Abruzzo Pizza. You will be missed.

That arabic place had pizza though, but I was kinda hesitant to try it, wonder if its as good as the old owners?

Well I didn't quite know at first because I saw the Green, White and RED colours on the window (i was not wearing my glasses at the time) so I parked my car in the plaza, went in, but Once I saw the arabic writing on the signs and stuff, I kinda knew it was OVER for Abruzzo pizza. RIP Abruzzo Pizza. You will be missed.

That arabic place had pizza though, but I was kinda hesitant to try it, wonder if its as good as the old owners?

http://www.abruzzopizza.com/

not sure but I THINK the owners are the same "Vince & Sergio At Your Service Since 1981"

I find dante's pizza to be hideous and extremely overpriced. If theres one thing I cant stand is non italians trying to make italian pizza.. the place may be owned by italians but take a look in the kitchen sometime. You can find better pizza almost anywhere, it really is disgusting.. and I know im not alone.. maybe you guys are just used to that cardboard crap they peddle at pizza pizza and such... If you want a real pizza try il Paesano's on the brownsline in etobicoke.. now THATS pizza!

Now that is way off base, Yes their pizza is ludicrously expensive (46 bucks and change for a large "Super Deluxe" with bacon and garlic bread with cheese) but it's also as good as I've found in this city thusfar. Not that I've tried them all mind you. I was stunned when it got rang up, but the pizza was good enough that I will still make the trek to the shop again (though skip the garlic bread). And it took days to finish, the only pizza I can remember that filled me with 2 slices per sitting. Got more accurate directions to Il Paesano's? I'd love to find something better.

I don't know mates, dante's pizza is still quite low in my books. I refuse to eat it at this point. The last time someone brought one over at a party and the pepperoni gave me heartburn all night. Its unbelievably expensive and totally unworth it.

il paesano's is at 396 Brown's Line. Take 427 south to the brownsline (stay in collectors, passed sherway exit, keep to your left but don't go on the QEW). Its on your right hand side about 2 minutes from exiting the 427. We make the drive from thornhill for dinner there quite often, and it is worth it. I would suggest the pizza and veal scalapini with peppers and mushrooms. http://www.ilpaesano.ca

Wanted to bump this thread since Panago has finally come to Toronto. Loved the stuff when I was in Vancouver, and I'm glad it's here so people don't have to eat the other crappy chain pizza that's around.

The location is at Bay and Gerrard, but they'll be expanding soon to other parts of the GTA.

Cora's pizza downtown Toronto is pretty good for late night munchies after clubbing/all-nighters! Huge slices (like half a pizza), lots of grease and freshly made!

Beware of it's rival (right next door), I've heard bad stories.

Ask any UTSG student and they will most likely agree!

Are you kidding me? I've eaten at toppers twice and it was gross both times. My entire family refuses to eat there it is so gross.

In Ottawa, Willy's is my favorite, no question. Tons of toppings, but a little pricey. There are 2 locations, both west end. One on Richmond, one on Merivale.

My friend's family used to own a pizza shop, and willy's put them out of business as their main competitor. Even they think their pizza is awesome.

My family likes Dantes but I personally won't pay $30 for a medium sized pizza. I also like thick, chewy crust which Dantes is not. I also have moral objectives to Dantes. The people who own the place are pretty much scum and mistreat customers/employees. We order from Dantes every few months and if I happen to be home, I get their pasta or sandwich which is pretty good.

My vote for best in Ontario is Toppers. Ever since I moved to Barrie for school that is all I order. They give you lots of free stuff to add to the pizza. My favorite is asiago cheese, italian sausage, peppers, onions and olives on a garlic bread crust (free), creamy tomato sauce (free), italian herbs (free), parmesan cheese (free) and thick crust (free).

+1 of Halifax Pizza. Since moving to Vancouver, I can't find anything close to Sicilian Pizza in Halifax. (Pizza Corner near library) Pizza here in Vancouver isn't very good many small pizzarias taste similary mediocre. Don't even get me started on Halifax Donairs....drool.:cheesygri

Pizza! A topic I can sink my teeth into.

For Eat-in:

Desserts Plus on Weston Rd - great place but always busy it seems. Pizza is good and reasonably priced. Other food is good as well, don't be fooled by the name it's a great italian place

Marcelo's Outskirts of Vaughn Mills Mall - Great pizza and again usually busy

Pazza - Eglinton near the Allen, good italian restaurant. Pizza and Calzones are great. Love the Gnocchi as well

Standard Cafe on College near Beatrice - Awesome patio in the summer for people watching, drinking beers and eating Pizza. The calzone is awesome too but last time I was there it didn't appear to be on the menu anymore :-(

Saffron(sp?) on Yonge just south of Steeles - My GF lives around the corner and took me there. I was surprised the pizza was pretty great as it is a Persian/Italian restaurant, seemed like an odd combo but it was good!

Solstice in Clarkson on Lakeshore - decent pizza, nice restaurant

For Take-out:

Il Paesano - the old hurontario location delivers to me but it has changed names numerous times but the food is still the same. Great for takeout!!

Peroni's - recently tried this and the pizza was good and it is close by! The calzone was fantastic though!! Not sure what it was but I loved it.

When I was small, me and my parents lived in the York residences during the time my dad went to Osgood Hall. They used to buy pizza from a local shop, the box said "Tasty". I think it's this store: http://www.yelp.ca/biz/tasty-pizza-and-more-north-york Their ingredients were fresh and pizza tasted great. It's been over a decade since I ate their pizza.

For frozen pizza, PC's Chicago style pizza is my fav. It's $6 at No Frills. A little piece will fill you up.

I'm surprised nobody here mentioned "The Big Slice". Pizza used to be good and affordable but now it cost almost $4 + tax for a slice!!!. With a pop, thats running you $6 each. Last 3 times I went, there was no sauce and very little cheese.

My favourite places in Mississauga are Italia Pizza, Pizzaville and Alexandra's. Gino's at Central Parkway/Burnhamthorpe has the best panzo.

Best pizza I`ve ever had would be a veddy long list
Because it`s so hard to compare one to another over a period of time. I will give a list of memorable ones I`d like to have a side-by-side taste test.

Dante`s
Abruzzo`s
Terroni
Vesuvio
Camarra`s
Il Paesano
and last but not least is Joey`s Pizzeria. It was located in Port Colborne, but it closed down :(

Haven`t tried Wyze Guyz and I would like to after reading up on them!

Best Pizza Chain
Pizza Nova - their sauce rouks! If you`re ever in Scarlem Kennedy/Lawrence area visit their ristorante. The chicken parm is awesome as the nova sauce makes the meal!
Pizzaiolo - Good selection, they use fresh ingredients and their crust is good

Pizza places to stay away from

Pizza hut - It`s a greasy slab of food that will slide down your throat!
Domino`s - A less greasier option than Pizza Hut
Pizza Delight - not as good as they were 20 years ago
Mama`s pizza - it tastes like they freeze their dough (at least the two I have been at)
Pizza Pizza - good if you want a step up from Kraft Delissio Ultimate Pizza
Boston pizza - they should change the name of their restaurant to Boston good sandwiches cause that`s what their kitchen is better at putting out. Their Boston Brute is mouth watering thinkin bout it
San Francesco Pizza - their veal/chicken parm sandwiches taste better than the pizza does. The sandwiches come a close second to california sandwiches on claremont

I never got to try Gino`s, but I`d like to same goes for Pizza Libretto

U can order slices or have a whole one made, they also have great pastas, but be sure to try the fried panzerottis. I would say this place is comparable to Dantes, its also Italian owned and have been in business over 20 yrs.

My favorite pizza place would be Bitondo's it's on Clinton Street 1 block south of college. I usually get a panzerotti there but whenever I get a slice I would never be disappointed. Planet Pizza (formerly Pizza Memo) on college is an ok place also in my opinion just because I walk by it everyday when I go to and from school. I like Pizza Hut since I was a kid, but now that I have grown up, I only see Pizza Pizza as my limited choice. Pizza Hut is still around which I know but Pizza Pizza is almost everywhere. I heard the franchise for Pizza Pizza is cheaper than Pizza Hut which I find it hard to believe. Anyways, Pizza Hut is better in my opinion because their cheese always melt properly with the peperoni and the crust always baked properly. Just my $0.02......:razz::razz::razz::razz:

I loved Dial A Pizza in Scarborugh growing up, when I got older it was Vesuvio's in the west end and Pizzaville in the east end

In Whitby

Corner Pizza without a doubt followed closely by Brothers Pizza

In Ottawa

I don't know about all about Ontario, but I've always liked Vesuvios in the Dundas/High Park area. I usually walk-in and get 2 slices and a drink. Slices are like 2.50 each. They only have Pepperoni and Veggie slices though.

P.S. Ms. Vesuivio doesn't look bad neither.

Yup, this place is bad-ass

Takes a whopping 45 minutes to bake the pizza, and it weighs literally at least 10 pounds

Has to be eaten with a knife and fork, I actually met a couple chowhound'ers last time I was there. Definitely the real deal chicago deep dish pizza..... two slices and you won't be able to move for the rest of the day

Usually I would go to planet pizza with a friend as we could get the walk in special which is $10 for an extra large pizza.

Bitondo's makes a good panzo yeah, but I find their slices to be average

I like Massimo's on College in the same immediate area -- a margherita slice with that garlic/basil spread they have, awesome.. Except it gets all over you

Not a huge pizza fan but the Gino's pizza on Main street, right across from McMaster is pretty good.

Boy that brings back memories...I used to frequent that Gino's a couple of times a week when I lived on campus at McMaster. I remember riding back to residence with 5 double pizzas on propped on the handlebars of my bicycle...

As for best pizzas (in the GTA), this is a never ending quest. So far, here are my faves:

1. Pizza Rustica on Blue Jays Way (http://www.pizzarustica.ca/) downtown TO. Nice thin crust pizza, excellent sauce.

2. Tony's Italian Restaurant (http://www.ordertonys.com/index.html) North York. Just north of Sheppard on Yonge. Again, excellent thin crust pizza.

3. Venezia Pizza, 230 Sandalwood Parkway East, Brampton, ON, (905) 846-3648. Just a little hole in the wall but man, the pizza was incredible. When I lived around there, I used to frequent this place so much, the owner knew exactly what I wanted as soon as I walked in. Make sure to get a fresh pizza. Slices that have been sitting there aren't that great. Normal crust (ie. not too thin, not too thick), amazing sauce...

4. Marcellos Pizzeria (http://marcellospizzeria.com/). I've only been to the location at Vaughan Mills Mall in Woodbridge, but every time I go, the place is a zoo. Get there early. Pizza is an excellent thin crust style. There's another location (original) on St.Clair Ave W downtown TO.

That's about it. I have Pizza Libretto on my list to hit one day. As for chains, you can't go wrong with Panago (http://www.panago.com/home.html). If you're close to one, they usually have a $5 lunch special where you can get any pizza in an individual size with a pop. Great selection of toppings. The pizza is a thick crust style like Boston Pizza or Pizza Hut (without the greasiness).

I've tried Dantes, Camarra and others and just don't know what the hype is about. There were mediocre at best...

That I didn't know.

i work by there..what is it called?

This place has the best slices out of all the pizza joints in Toronto. I have tried them all over the years, the key is their slices are always fresh, unlike almost every other pizza place in Toronto. Typically, places in Toronto make like 5-10 pizzas for slice sale & then try to sell the slices for the rest of the day. These guys make 1 pizza at a time for slice sale.

Thats a bold statement....I personally think Gino's, 241, Twice the deal, New Orleans, Godfather's etc are all about the same- average.
I've yet to have worse pizza than at Pizza Pizza, (maybe 3 for 1). Completely bland and flavourless, dry crust, skimpy on toppings, and overall low value. When Pizza Pizza or 3 for 1 are my only option for pizza, I get something else instead.

However the way subdivisions are being built all around it, I'd be surprised if many of them still live there.. That surrounding place is becoming really built up, it used to be all country out there.. i've lived here my whole life

Amato Pizza is worth a try.

I had one today at their yonge St. location. The descriptions made them sound much better than it was. Pretty mediocre actually, at a premium price. Seating area was worn out and filthy.

I don't know about all about Ontario, but I've always liked Vesuvios in the Dundas/High Park area. I usually walk-in and get 2 slices and a drink. Slices are like 2.50 each. They only have Pepperoni and Veggie slices though.

Vesuvios is definitely one of the best ... anyone who comes over to High Park and tries it - always comments on how great it is. Because they only have pepperoni and veggie slices - is why they are always fresh! All these Pizza joints with 10 different pizzas sitting in their display cases, always let me down.

I also like King Slice on Dundas. Different kind of pizza ... more garlic in the sauce ... reminds me a bit of the original Massimo's Pizza on College, one of my all time favorite pizza joints (too bad it burned down - haven't been to the new location on Queen yet).

One last lament. SanFrancesco's used to be on the corner of Queen and Bathurst years ago (now pizza pizza) was one of the most magical slices ever! We would always end up there and down atleast 2-3 slices after a night of drinking. When it was super fresh out of the oven - you would gladly destroy the roof of your mouth downing it!

I tried King Slice for the first time yesterday.
The slice was huge, and generous in toppings, but noticeably undercooked. It was white on top, and the crust was barely browned. The green peppers (I had deluxe) were crisp, in a "raw" sort of way. I would have asked for them to bake it a few more minutes, but when I looked around I noticed everyone else's slices looked the same; I wanted to try the King Slice everyone raves about. The garlic oil was nice, and the sauce had the noticeable "homemade" flavour to it, but I don't think I'd go back.

For now, the only pizza in Toronto I can vouch for is:
Vesuvio (College St)
Regina (College St)
Camarra (Dufferin and Lawrence)
The Big Slice (Yonge St)

Calabria Bakery, 1772 Midland Av., makes the best wood fired pizza, to order, for $8 to $12, 12 inch, but only on Thursday or Friday, until 4 PM.
You can watch the expert pie man as he puts your order together. Takes less than 10 minutes.

I've heard really good things about this place and also pizzeria libretto, have to check both these places out.

I haven't been to Libretto, but I know it is twice the price of Calabria, and service or wait times can be a problem. Calabria has QPR and RFD.;)

Aww man, I remember Abruzzo! My brother used to be friends with the owner's son. He ate pizza everyday XDD But can't believe it's still around! Ayy, I have to try it sometime!

Sorry to hear, I guess any place can have it's not so perfect moments. Honestly, everyone who goes there always raves about it being the best slice, & I agree. They tend to have the freshest slices, because they only make 8 slices at a time, unlike other places that'll make 8 slices of each different type of pizze (eg 8 slices x 8 kinds = 64 slices).

Their tomato sauce is certainly a cut above, & the garlic oil is superb. They even have their own Facebook fan page, that wasn't started by them (just some customers who really liked it).

There used to be a chain in the Durham area 20 years ago called Pizza Delight that was quite good.

There used to be a place in Oshawa called Mother's Pizza that was out of this world!!
