View Full Version : Best online method to show off kids pictures to friends, family

What's the best way to show pictures to friends and family? I have picassa and photoshop elements. With my DSLR, I am looking for something to easily unload the pics from my camera, do some minor editing and then post it. Ideally, if this can be done within one software, that would be great...
What are you parents doing?
Secondly, anyone doing the 'shot a day' - and no, i don't mean alcohol!!! I mean taking one picture a day of your kid...

The wife uses "shutterfly". It does this nice slideshow thing, and doesn't seem to inundate you with advertising.

I use photobucket and p/w protect it
I have also used Google photos, but their storage limits are high.
Many also use picturetrail.
If you are sharing via Messenger, I LOVE Hello!

http://www.flickr.com/ (I didn't use it but it seems popular)

I use www.smugmug.com, which is a pay site dedicated to sharing pictures. It's around $45/yr but the service is good. There are no ads, or storage or bandwidth limits.

Smugmug +1
That's what I use to share my photos (http://whiplash.smugmug.com/).
I password protect the people photos (90% of all my pictures) just to maintain some privacy. Family loves it. :)
The cool thing with smugmug is that if a family member really likes a photo you posted of your child (or any other), he can order a print directly from the website.

1gb is really tiny! It's tiny if you're uploading 10 megapixel pics, but there's no need for that. Resize them to 1024x768 and they're just as good for viewing online. At about 100kB each, you can store 10,000 pics in a 1GB account....that's more than any family or friends would want to see. :)

Is there a software that can do all of this at once:
- edit
- resize
- upload to site
- create file system online and locally

Agreed, nothing I hate more than the enormous pics my family members always send after events. I didn't really NEED a 7MB image file of Uncle Cletus falling over drunk again.

I use Photo Cleaner Pro (www.photocleaner.com) to batch process images. It sharpens, adjusts brightness, automatically rotates and puts borders on the pictures. It can also save to any format but I stick with 100% jpg.
After that, I upload the pics to my own website which I use Gallery 2. This way, I'm not using a well known site where anyone can browse at. Not many people know nor care about my site so only family and friends will most likely visit. :D
I do have a flickr subscription but that's only for other types of pictures. :D

- create file system online and locally JAlbum does it all but automatic uploading. It creates local directory structure with correct URLs and all, then you can use IE to FTP it to web space of your choice. Or use Picasa with picasaweb

Using Picaso Hello with Google blogs works well and is easy to post updates daily. The blog concept is great if you want to do a "photo of the day" type web page.

Future Shop...
We use them for all our pictures. Allows you to share images, then they can order. During specials, the pictures are very cheap 10-15 cents...
No limit to amount hosted, but you do need to order a certain amount a year ...which we do. I have some thousand or so pictures (3-5 MP) on the site at a given time.

One thing about free picture hosting websites is that you have to make sure you read the Terms and Conditions very carefully. For a lot of sites, the pictures you upload become their property and they can use it any way they want without your permission. Just a word of warning I found out about in photography forums.

I use ACDSEE 8.0 for my desktop photo viewing.
It has great tools one of which is batch resizing.
Just select all the photos you want resized and wham bam, it's done.
There are options to resize and save to another folder, overwrite the current photo, etc.
It is a fast and easy to use program.

Hey Skanji!
I did the shot a day with my daughter until she was 1 yr old. I have to admit that I missed a few days, but it IS a challenge.
I utilize a private service called typhen.net...costs me about $50.00 a year.
It's fun, challenging and sometimes a pain in the neck to try and get that pic before midnight EVERYDAY.
In the end...oh so worth it!
Good Luck!

If you're willing to pay, then +1 vote for Smugmug. I've been using it for years after trying many free sites that require visitors to register, have big banner ads, don't display large photos, use too much jpg compression, don't allow downloading of original-sized files, take too long to upload, etc.
Be aware of free sites' limitations. I think flickr's free accounts are limited in size and 200 photos altogether. By last count, I have over 1400 photos in my Smugmug account comprising a couple of vacations, some weddings and photos of my 15 month old. If you have a DSLR, I assume you take more photos than the average.

I use phanfare.com and I think its great. About $55 US a year, with unlimited storage and the ability to upload movies as well. I use it to archive all my originals and dont have to worry about backing them up on my pc. Great interface and they make nice slideshows your family and friends can view as well. Profiles are not public so someone cant just happen across them and you can password protect as well.

Picasa and Picasa web from google can do all that you want. Setup a library of your pictures and videos, edit/resize/redeye/etc, easy batch upload to picasaweb, easy email with gmail.
If you really need more than 1 gb you can always pay for more space. A lot of sites mention here all require you to pay for more space.

Adobe Photoshop CS2.. I can cut the size from my D70 1.5MB pics to like 200k instantly without editing.
1GB is quite a bit imo.

Facebook is handy for posting photos and I love the tagging feature. One thing I don't like is that they then to mangle your photos (jpeg artifacts etc...) a bit. Not really a big issue for most people.

Being as close to WEb 2.0 as possible without it being 2.0 outright...this is the coolest thing out there.
If your family and friends are on there it's the cats ass. Video Uploads., Pic Uploads., Mobile Pic Upload compliant as well (if you're so inclined)...It's nothing compared with sites that offer full res downloads, and ordering features, but I'm sure it'll be eventually integrated. Otherwise, the niftyness and novelty of 'tagging' people ad nauseum, and commenting, permissions friendly...it's the thing I like myself.

The thing I hate about people posting photos to facebook is that not everyone is using it. The fact that you have to have an account to see what it is all about has prevented me from using it. I'm not going to send a link to a facebook profile with pictures to my grandmother and force her to sign up for an account to view them.

Not true. There's a http link that you can share with friends don't have facebook accounts. Of course, your friends can go anywhere other than the album you shared.
