The specs are a bit low for the price. You can get better specs for a lower price. But, Sony is a good quality brand, so it could be worth paying a little extra for the name.

Both are good.. Service might be better at Dell, but Sony are nice looking.

if you want looks, go for sony. if you want the best price for performance, dell is definitely the way to go.

Agreed. Dell offers the best value for your money (in the case of laptops).

Not all sony's look snazzy. Imo, this particular one is the one of the odd ones out of the lineup that don't look up to par with other sony designs. Its really plain and bulky looking.

It's a laptop. Form should be the last thing you care about, function is what counts.

You get what you pay for. Dell makes some of the worst consumer laptops in the industry, though really good bang for the buck if you don't take quality into consideration (their business class laptops aren't too bad).
I'd definitely go for the Sony in this case.

function, and quality

Not entirely true. My first laptop was a 15 incher widescreen. It was powerful fo that time but was not as portable as I thought it was.
Fast forward to my new laptop I just got. 13.3 Sony Vaio SZ series. Small, lightweight and portable.
If your using a laptop to replace your desktop and don't plan to travel much with it...size doesn't really matter.
But when your using your laptop for travel and not constantly sitting on a desk...size (form) does matter.

Yup, agreed. I have nothing against dell, but the laptop I got from them a few years ago was 8 lbs.. impossible to carry around. My new one is a 2.5lb asus.. much easier on the back!

Sony products almost always seems to be about the looks, isn't it ... eh?....

Portability = function, exactly as I said.

Dell has lightweight laptops - better to compare those models against lightweight models of other brands rather than their "bricks".

just get a dell, they have nice deals every week and with a 100$ e-coupons it's better... for 1200$ CND TAX IN & SHIPPING IN I got 2 months ago a Core 2 Duo 1.66Ghz, 256MB ATI X1400 vidcard, wireless, 15.4 widescreen WSXGA+ with truelife! monitor, 80gigs SATA hdd, 1gig-DDR2 ram, etc.... can't go wrong with a Dell laptop

The Dell XPS is like the Hummer of Laptop but with that it comes with one of the best warranty plan because dell knows that XPS customers will pay more for there lap top that is why they take EXTREME care like next day air mail battery replacement.... DELL Deal is far better but it is ugly.

Right, cause laptop "form" has nothing to do with portability.
