Hi all. The Archos 404 media player is now $200 plus tax at Shoppers Drug Mart until March 23. That means that it will be ~$190 plus tax if you can talk FS/BB into a PM. I would have grabbed one if I didn't already own a Vision:M and an IPaq PDA...

Good luck!

How can you manage to PM it. BB is selling it for $300.
It would be 200 - 10 = $190. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a question . :?:

The player is $200 in SDM. If I used $150 points. I need to pay additional $50 + gst.

Do you think the points on the player will be computed as :
($299) original price * 20x * 10 + 50 * 10 around 60k points

Am I correct ?

chlorine
Mar 11th, 2007, 12:26 AM
read the shoppers 20x (in expired I think) and shoppers electronics thread people...

I think it would be hard to find stock in the GTA. But if you did, it would make absolutely no sense to PM if there's still 20x. Getting bonus optimum points would be better.

199 * 10 * 20 => 40000 => $75 off at SDM.

Depends what you're needs are. If you want to watch videos, go for the Archos, if you want music, go for the Vision.

I personally have the Vision and it's a great player for music and decent for videos.

So, does anyone want to explain to me why I need to waste $200 on this thing and why it will change my life?
Sorry, I'm SORT-OF understanding but if someone can give me the wrap-up ... I'd enjoy! :D

Edit: CNET has some good info ... dumb question.
Would it be stup!d to use this as a straight up MP3 Player? 30GBs? $200 sounds like a good price for a 30GB MP3 Player, no?

If you're just going to use it as an mp3 player, just think of the other stuff as bonuses :P I'm not sure what the market place is like for hd based mp3 players, but this is a stellar deal compared to the Ipod video IMO.

I'm going to use mine primarily as a photo viewer and as an on-the-go storage device. I like the idea of being to copy images from my camera to the archos, as I am going to be taking a long trip later on this year. mp3s, videos and pdfs are bonuses to me and good ones at that. Just to note, to use the archos as an otg device, you need the DVR station or docking adapter.

This deal is dead since ......

A) Future Shop does not sell this anymore (taken of of their Web site).

B) Best Buy is out of stock at almost every store.

C) SDM is practically sold out of this everywhere.

D) Even if a BB had stock they will call SDM to see if they have it in stock and if they do not, no PM.

Title is wrong as well, not $180 - math is wrong.

Chlorine is correct...you would get 40,000 optimum points on this purchase.

As you are in Alberta, you pay GST only no PST....so on the $199.99 price after 6% GST is applied, makes a total of $ 211.99 then, deduct your $150 optimum redemption making your total net cost of this player - $61.99 and yes, you'll have enough points for a future redemption of $75.00

Yeah, for a 30GB it's not too bad. When I saw it at Best Buy it seemed kind of bulky for me but that's probably because I've owned a Creative Zen Micro in the past and a Zen Plus now.

It's a great deal for a huge screen and 30GB though.

I know I lost out on the points but the thing is that I purchased the 404 Cinema plugin prior to the SDM sale and therefore could no longer return it to BB. Actually I could have and made someone else really happy because they would have to purchase the Cinema Plugin but I would because the plugin works the specific serial/hardware number. Oh well ..

I did buy the DVR from SDM and benefited from the points :D

10% of 200 is 20... 200-20 is 180...

FS/BB/stooples price beats by 10% of the diff., not take 10% of the lower price....

Title is wrong as well, not $180 - math is wrong.

A) - regardless of what's avail. on website, store stock is diff. so you still may be able to find it instore.

D) - yes, std procedure is that FS/BB calls to confirm price and/or stock, but this isn't always followed, ... that's why it's still possible for PMs, if you're lucky to get s/b not to check stock... ;)

So just so I 'm informed for next time. Is there a better way to do this?
---------------------------------------------------
I bought a 404 right after signing up for Optimum card.
-20X points on Archos 404 unit purchase gave me $75 in points which I then used moments later to purchase (I paid the tax) the on sale with 20X points DVR station.
-So total purchase was $225 for the 404 and $9.10 for the DVR station.
-Call it $235 for a 30 Gb mp3/mp4/PVR with remote.
Just what I was looking for and I have some points from the DVR station as points are accrued on it, about 15,000 for $25 off some item
Wonder if they have the 404 video camera accesory?

Been looking if it does support subtitles and apparently you have to hardsub them yourself using Virtual Dub. I've used V-Dub for some video editing before so shouldn't be too difficult.

I believe that the Archos 404 does support PDF. If PDF Ebooks are the same format as PDF files then it should be ok.

PDF support is okay... but slow to change page... I put the eb games tiv pdf on there but it's hard to read because of the low-res screen... so don't buy this because it can read PDF

Been doing some calculations..

if you have enough optimum points (75,000) to use $150 discount , you can purchase the Archos for $50 (199.99 - 150) and get back roughly 47,500 points if you purchase it today (saturday March 23).

This works out to
$50 + 27,500 optimum points = approx $100. (tax excl)

I'd say awesome deal:!:

Conditions...
1) they have the Archos at your SDM
2) you have enough points to use $150 discount (75,000 Optimum points)
3) the 40x is in effect on saturday (20x product points + 20x store points)
4) 20x product points is calculated by $200 x 190 = 38,000
5) 20x store points is calculated by $50 x 190 = 9,500

This works out to
$50 + 27,500 optimum points = approx $100. (tax excl)

I'd say awesome deal:!:

Conditions...
1) they have the Archos at your SDM
2) you have enough points to use $150 discount (75,000 Optimum points)
3) the 40x is in effect on saturday (20x product points + 20x store points)
4) 20x product points is calculated by $200 x 190 = 38,000
5) 20x store points is calculated by $50 x 190 = 9,500

We did not have enough points (only around 55000) to take advantage of the $150 with 750000 points so I purchased the Archos 404 and DVR base for $270 at SDM in Kitchener (Fairway road...they still have units left) today. Since they were still marked as 20X points, I received the 40X point reward or 108000 points which will be banked for future purchases. I figure this came to a before tax price of of $65 ($270-205 rewards in the future).:D

I'm sure me or one of my boys will find a use for it!:cheesygri

Thanks RFD for the lead....but at the same time RFD is making me poor!>:(

I'm sorry, I've never redeemed points before, but how do they calculate the tax?

a) $200 * 1.14 = $228 - $150 (points redemption) = 78 OR
b) $200 - $150 (points redemption) = $50 * 1.14 = $57 ?

Pretty big difference, could anyone clarify?

Plus that you only get whatever points based on $78 or less depends on how they caculate the points (before tax ?) :-(

Are you sure?

I found them in several stores last weekend:
Guelph: Gordon@Laird

Dude, I love you.

I took the back way to the 401 yesterday just in case - found two 404s and one DVR Station. I confirmed they were 20x points and 40% off, and said I'd take one 404 and the Station. She said, why don't I hold it for you til the morning when it'll be 40x points?

I love her, too.

So I went back this morning, bought the two items (the last 404 was gone), then cashed in $150 on points to buy their last XBox 360 at 40x points. I now have over $450 in points. I think I was at about $150 before all this.

Semi O/T - I then swung by thesourcecc and picked up the Acer 27" LCD HDTV - the AT2703 - for $499.

It's like my own personal Boxing Day. :-) All these new toys, plus the next decade's worth of vitamins, razor blades, Method products and cottage cheese free.

Time to go push buttons and plug things in. Go Gryphs!

Got archos 404 in pharmaprix. But was charged $350 and got only 20X points. seems the store from which I brought had different pricing than other stores.
Davibe: Is there any way I can get refunded for the difference? And should I get 40X or 20X? thanks.

There were 3 Archos DVRs at the Eglington and Spadina (Chaplin) location in Toronto as of this morning. Ask for the skinny Indian looking guy in the Photolab if you go.

I would have posted this earlier, but I have been away from an internet connection for most of the day.

Good luck. 20x is better than 0x.

I went by tonight, there was only 1 and it was "On Reserve" for someone to pick up later that night. I doubt there's anything now.

SBMTL, which pharmaprix was it. A downtown pharmaprix had 2 Archos 404s with 2 base stations at their regular price Friday afternoon. My wife saw them in the digicam section. I called twice and spoke to two different CSRs who denied their existence and told me there was no manager on site at the time of my call. I am thinking that they won't honour their clearance prices. I was going to go yesterday but I had a feeling they were going to pull them from the floor.

The didn't have the Archos at clearance prices either. Return the Archos you bought or go to the store and call head office from there and complain. If they don't give you the clearance price, return it. If they won't refund because it is a final sale, then they have to give you the clearance price. Check the circular, there is an Archos in the DVR base in there.

Dundas and Runnymeade in T.O. has one that a guy returned as of closing time. I was there buying a few things when I seen the transaction go down. Don't know if it was opened or not, just heard that he wanted a refund and the manager came and authorized it. That's all I know as I didn't stick around - paid for my stuff and then left.

I posted this message in the SDM Clearance Thread first (just now) then remembered this thread ... here goes ...

Ugh, I feel like such an a-hole for posting this, but I will anyways ...
It's about the Archos 404 System and Dock ... I've found it ... it's in my house.
Here's why. I drove and travelled very early in the morning for a 8AM opening to get a camera. I called ahead and asked about an Archos system for the site and they told me no. When I get there, it's sitting in the display. I gave them heck and they said that somebody never opened it and returned it (so RFD guy getting cash for his points?) ...
Anyways, MY ORIGINAL INTENTIONS were to buy the unit and then bring it back home to Toronto and allow someone to trade me their points/cash whatever for the unit ... a fair trade, save them the time and money and really I wouldn't want to profit anything off of it.

HOWEVER, since I did buy it and went crazy this weekend with stuff, I'm looking at my Credit Card going "Oh Ohhhh" and I need the cash ...
SO, to compensate for this, I'm dropping the price ...

The unit is $200 and the system and DVR Dock together I'll sell for $270.
I hope everyone recognizes this originally started out as "Let me buy this for a RFD MEMBER" and turned into "I'm in debt, I have to sell it!"
I'm telling you guys because I'd rather post it here for someone who was probably going to buy it in cash, who's getting an EVEN BETTER DEAL NOW because of me rather than putting it on Kiijii or something to somebody who's not even on this site.

I'll post it in the B/S/T in a bit ... maybe.
Sorry for spamming, this isn't like me but ... I just felt bad, I had to put it up for those REALLY looking for it.
Thanks.

Can you buy something, get the points, return it, and still keep the points?
Have people been successful doing this?

I believe you can find it on BT but it won't work as it is tied to your serial #.
ya, kinda hard to believe they are charging for it... but it seems like most are willing to pay instead of converting their vids.

Who told you this? The price is clearly $199 unless you're in another province or something of the sort. That's the only reason I can think of it NOT being that price.

With Shoppers, I would agree. You sort of have to prove THEM WRONG to get what you want (but then again, isn't it like this with ANY company) ...
But definitely, there's an inconsistency RIGHT HERE so hopefully you can have that fixed.

Not only is it $199 but 20X and 40X last Saturday.

I don't think it needs power as it should be similar to the regular docking station which also doesn't need power to transfer videos, pictures etc. I used the docking station last night to transfer some stuff because I've misplaced my Archos cable and I was too lazy to plug in the power adapter after moving the Archos+station next to my computer.

Today's freebie at Giveaway of the Day is software to convert media files to mobile formats. I mention it here because it has Archos presets. It's a beta version of AVS DVD to Go 2.

To get it free you must download and install it today. That's today, April 20, 2007. The direct link is here (http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/avs-dvd-to-go-2-beta/) . Did I mention it will only link to the free download today? :cheesygri

Unlike most GAOTD giveaways, which come with no support or upgradeability (and which usually aren't beta), this one comes with free upgrades for a year. Also, AFAIK this beta version is only available from GAOTD at this time.

If you install this, watch for the registration code which pops up in a window in the background BEHIND the setup window.

I haven't had a chance to put it through its paces - posting now because of the time limit. Someone named Bladed Thoth posts 15 minute reviews of all the GAOTD apps and the relevant review is here (http://www.bladedthoth.com/reviews/15mrs/avs-dvd-to-go-v2-1-1-84-beta/).

I'm loving this SDM 404/DVR combo, and the rest of the family is leaving me alone with them because they are busy with the SDM XBox360 heheh.
