Just curious how google got so BIG?? I mean there were/are others that do that same that they do.
Was it marketing, better product, management etc???

I switched to Google for several reasons:

a) Yahoo and MSN were filled with ads and irrelevant information
b) Search engines such as metacrawler and altavista were too long to type out
c) The returned criteria for Google was much more accurate in terms of what I was searching for

--------------

I'm pretty sure that their marketing strategy include some (if not all) of the above.

Look at their homepage. All it is is a search box, with a couple of links at the bottom. It's nice and clean, something that yahoo and msn weren't (and still aren't).

other than those mentioned, how do they differentiate themselves when it comes to generating revenue?

I used Excite before I switched to Google.

Open two windows. Open Excite in one, then go to the other and open Google. Excite's takes about 10+ seconds to load. Google is instantaneous.

That was literally the difference.

Google is full of ads....that's how some of the hits are when you search for something. It just not that obvious as the other search engines.

hehehe, I knew someone was going to say that. Btw, I am done school.
Actually, just a bunch of us were talking about google and none of us could point out exactly what made them this big.

Go to http://www.wikipedia.org

Enter in GOOGLE.

That is the first thing I did, but I am not convinced with their answer, especially under "Growth" and they were a relatively big even before the IPO and the price of IPO being $85 is a good indication of the strength of the company before IPO.

1. Accuracy. Some people have noted that Google is very tech-centric. The results also include searches related to the definition of the world. Google is not affected by a webpage full of meta data like "wii ps2 ps3 xbox360 xbox" ,etc, etc trying to "climb" to #1.
2. The Google model of business. Lots written on this.
3. Innovation. Again, lots of articles on this.
4. The ever-changing google logo. Always a new one every day.

Google became big without those ads, now they are doing what any corporation in power would be doing, taking advantage of that power. I am thinking we are due for the next google, this one is getting too big now (google ads everywhere piss me off and they are generally turning into an evil empire).
