View Full Version : Want to get admitted by UBC so bad

all my final grades are not bad actually and they are: English 12 (73), Maths 12 (89), History 12 (92), Physics 12 (85) and Mandarin 12 (77)
but what I am worrying is that... I get only 56 in the English provincial exam and I know it's really bad . Luckily, I got 84 in my school grade and hence I got 73 in my English final grade...
I want to go to UBC, do you guys think that they will deny my application because I only get 56 in my English 12 provincial exam?
and having an average of 84.75, do you guys thinks that I would have a chance?

No use worrying about it now, it's out of your hands. I think you have a pretty good chance.
But whenever one door shuts, another opens. You can always do a year or two at a college and then transfer.

With a post like this, you wonder why you're getting 73 in English...
It completely depends on the demand in your program. Engineering? Probably not. Arts? Sure, you'll be fine.

UBC is a party school.
I went there, they will admit anyone with money.
The easiest way to get in is to take Arts like 90% of the students there. Take 2 classes a week, pay $10k a year, and get a degree! You basically don't have to go to class. As long as UBC has your money, they can care less.
I am pretty pissed at UBC. I wasted all my money, and the education you get is piss poor. Sure there are some smart people that WANT to learn, but most of them just party, or feel unsatisfied with the education.

yeah i doubt you'd be able to get into engineering.. pretty tough course to get into no matter which type of engineering you're trying to get into. and arts is probably one of the lowest admission averages, but a lot of times you have to prove yourself in order to get admitted into the university (send in your portfolios, do interviews..) so even if your marks aren't as high you still need to be able to show what you can do.

try getting in via Arts then switch to a faulty that you want after first year.

It's university. The prof's and TA's won't force you to learn. If you want to learn, then do it yourself and ask the prof's and TA's when you have questions/problems.

What faculty did u apply for?
Also, I wouldnt worry about your provincial mark, they look at the final grades , but how come your asking this now?? Assuming your still in high school, how do u have all your final marks already?
an 84% average is good enough for Arts for sure......
Despite what everyone is sayign about engineering, UBC's admission requirements for engineering are suprisingly low.....So I think 84 would be good enough for admission for that....
But, if u applying for Science, you are probably out of luck, and its propbably too low for Business too, unless you did an awesome job on your supplementary and ********ted ALOT on it.....

Unlike out east, 80% or higher will get you into UBC and SFU engineering. Science on the other hand is 90%+ for UBC, business is 84%+ and you need a supplemental application. Arts, no clue. They only look at your final marks anyway.

If engineering is your game then go to one of the colleges for first year.
They're excellent for first year engineers because the transition from high school won't be so rough, you'll pay less tuition, and you'll go into second year with a higher GPA than most people (therefore, you can go into pretty much any program you like).

Good luck. Even if you get into UBC, you'll most likely fail that language test (LPA? If I remember correctly.)
What I don't understand is how can you get such low grades? High school is not that hard...
With your average, you will have no problem going into forestry.

UBC is a shithole and so is Vancouver. Therefore your chances are very very good. Don't smoke too much weed and try to stay off the smack.
Haha.
To the OP: As others have said, UBC just looks at final marks, so 85% overall should get you into most faculties except science and commerce. If you're going for science, you can always go into Arts for the 1st year, take whatever your intended program requires, and reapply for the faculty in 2nd year without wasting any time.
But do yourself a favor and think about what's right for you. If you're a mediocre student, just getting into science and managing B's won't get you into any good programs and your degree won't be very useful. Consider engineering or nutrition, forestry etc. instead of just science, otherwise you'd be in 2nd/3rd year and still not know what you're going to do with your bio major.

I think 84% was last year's cut-off for arts so you definitely have a chance. This page ( http://www.students.ubc.ca/welcome/admission.cfm?page=english ) has information about the English requirements.

Good point about the LPI. The OP should take the LPI now and see the result. If he passes, then he should be ok. If not, then I wouldn't bother with UBC.
FYI for the OP, all UBC students need to take two first-year English courses. If you are weak at English, think again about going to UBC.

The admission guarantee for SFU is now 75% except for business which is 85%, I cant believe the standards are falling so much. The only faculty Id want to go to in SFU is business......
Dont be like me and apply for Commerce as your first option and Science as your second option.
