Lets say all street lighting (for the road and highways) are converted to high intensity LED instead of the current high pressure sodium bulbs, and public lighting are converted to Compact FLuorescent, how much will it help the environment by cutting down on electricity usage and therefore emission?

Also, would want to help the government to do the conversion but paying a one time fee of lets say $50 ~ $100?

Well assuming that the statistics of LED or CFL are true and it does use less power and ultimately save us money and lower the emissions, then it will definitely help the environment drastically. This is assuming that global warming is man made and not just mother nature, but that is a completely different debate.

Why would I pay $50 to 100 bucks for this switch? If NA was smart they would look at this as an investment in our future and this investment would pay off in a matter of yrs with all the money they are saving. The government gets enough of our money, why give them more to invest in something that they can afford to spend with the current surplus (Canada) that we have now?

QFT !!

Cdn government definitely gets enough of our money (and not always wisely spends it either). No need to fill up the goverment's coffers more than we already are....

+2...............the Cdn government isn't bright enough to use our money wisely if we gave more of it to them....

agree. But I think Ontario wants to do something like that to follow the aussies.

I have heard that some people are sensitive to CFL b/c of that humming or some kinda interference. Anyone read into it?

I have a better idea - what about converting all those pickup truck drives who shouldn't really drive a pickup truck to ultra low emission cars?

This was discussed in my circuits class.
This simply will not work because the infrastructure for LED lighting is not in place.
The current bulbs are high voltage, low current. All the breakers are turned to their summation of currents.
LED's are high current low voltage. If you were to replace a lot of the standard bulbs then the breakers would trip and power outages occur.

Of course I could be wrong. I don't remember exactly what my prof said but its something along those lines.

Not sure if UrbanPoet means to say LED and CF are not bright enough or the government is not 'smart' enough or both. ;)

as far as i know... the lights they use in street lamps are efficient and high powered...
dunno if they could get CFL bright enough to do the same job.

My Tylenol bill would go through the roof. Goddam LED stobe effects give me such a headache. This past Christmas was terrible with so many houses covered in dimly-lit stroboscopic displays. >:(
