Can I replace HDTV with HDCP compliant monitor? For example, instead of buying a HDTV, can I buy a HDCP compliant monitor and enjoy the same quality of HDTV when watch HD programming on digital cable.... or are they really completely different?

HDCP is a protection mechanism which will not let you watch a protected video unless the monitor is HDCP-compliant. I don't know if HDCP-compliant tv's/monitors are already out but some computer monitors are.

edit: ok I haven't fully read the title and didn't notice it's a computer monitor you are trying to replace your hdtv with. It depends on the native resolution of the monitor you're buying ( don't really know what sizes are available for the HDCP-compliant monitors ). It will downconvert it if the resolution is lower than 1920 x 1080 for the hd signal which means some loss of detail, upconvert it to fit the screen greater than 1920 x 1080 which stretches the images.

So are you saying that I can basically use a 1920x1080 computer monitor to watch HDTV and it will produced the same picture quality of a regular HDTV?

Probably better since computer monitors have smaller pixels ( is that the right term for it? ).
