I'm considering 3web internet in Calgary and am trying to figure out what types of modem they use. I'd rather buy one than rent. 3web will sell one for $99. Will any docsis 2.0 modem work? And if so, where else can one purchase one?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Any DOCSIS 2.0 will work. 3Web rep tried to tell me that it might not. I asked him why then would his network not conform to DOCSIS standards, he just muttered about how it's not fast enough. Then he didn't have an answer when I asked if I was getting moer than 30mbps downstream on their service:lol:

I use a Linksys modem. 3Web has given me Motorola's in the past. Most recently, it was a 5101, I believe.

The preferred modem for bittorrent use is the Motorola Surfboard 5100.

It has the least amount of problems for BT. The 5101 and higher seems to have issues.

You can get the 5100 at any futureshop.

What issues does the 5101 have? I'm curious as my cousin also has a 5101 and has had some problems with torrents.

I have a 5100 and the linksys and no issues.

Really? Their website has never had such a thing and I've never seen it in the past. Guess i'll go check it out. Anyone know approximately how much a 5100 costs at FS?

Ive heard a lot a of negative things said about 3web like 1/2 CS waits, and frequent outages. I suggest you find some reviews from sites like broadbandreports.com or canadianisp.com. Anyways are you looking for a cable modem or dsl? They have wireless dsl modems at canada computers for like $30, but i dont think they actually sell cable modems in retail stores. I personally would rent the modem for $5/Month b/c it only comes to $60/year, and if you buy the modem and dislike the service, you would be stuck with a modem, unless you found a isp that supports the same modem.

About $100 or so.

I've read on google that ppl had 5101 and they had to powercycle the modem every now and then when using BT. 5100 nobody has ever had trouble with BT.

Talked to many happy toronto and calgarian 3web users. They all agree that customer service is lacking so if you are a person who requires CS for issues other actual outages or disruption of service then you should pay more for an isp that can help you. Of course if there really is a problem with your service then you're stuck dealing with the CS.

Also purchased a 5100 off another RFDer for cheap. Now i just have to wait until the first week in April when I actually move in and set up my computer. Thanks for the opinions.
