Basically I want to do what they do with Linux. I have NO experience with Linux, other than playing with Redhat for a few minutes.
I have a desktop that I don't really use, and I've been looking for a new project as of late to play around with. So I can either format my entire HDD, or just reformat a partition to play around with it.
What do I need? How do I do it? Can someone either help me out, or point be in the direction of a good tutorial?

first of all..... does this old desktop use nVidia graphics? if so then it's EASY to get beryl running
let ubuntu handle all those partitions (it will format ur entire hdd and make its own)
here's the guide i followed a while ago when i was fooling around with beryl

excellent... you should experience beryl even better than my old system (AXP 1.3GHz with integ. GF4MX)
funny how beryl does it without the monster minimum specs (aka Aero Glass)

Yup! My laptop can't handle Aero Glass at all with its i915 graphics chipset but it handles Beryl well enough.

So basically in order to get started, all I need is to download Ubuntu and then follow that tutorial to install Beryl? Do I have to download anything for Beryl?

Check out the Ubuntu Ultimate Edition, comes with a lot of software pre-installed and was painless to install and get surfing on an older box.

What are the differences between Ubuntu Ultimate Edition and Ubuntu 6.10?
I got 6.10 installed, is it worth it to install Ultimate Edition?

Having problems getting this going.
I get to this point in the tutorial that ShadowVlican gave me:
sudo chmod +x ./beryl-install-script
sudo ./beryl-install-script
And it says that sudo: unable to execute ./beryl-install-script: No such file or directory
Help?
Do I need an internet connection for that script to work? I currently have lent my wireless desktop adapter to my little brother...

Hey. You need the internet for this script to work as it looks at the online repositories for updates. But that error you got is because Linux cant' find that file. I am not too familiar with linux/unix commands but the "." means it's looking at the current directory. Just make sure when you create the script file with gedit (text editor) you save it it with that file "beryl-install-script". Or you can just save it as that terminal command should make a new text file under that name anyways.
But when you run:
sudo chmod +x ./beryl-install-script
sudo ./beryl-install-script
Make sure you are in the same directory that you were in before when running gedit. Hope that helps. You can also take a look at other Beryl tutorials as well. As when I was installing it I ran into trouble as well - so its good to see what other ways to install and configure Beryl as well.

From what I understand it's based on 6.10 plus a bunch of additional apps adn the updates are already installed when you install the os. The first link I posted has a list of the pre-installed software.

So I have it set to start beryl-manager upon login, but everytime I log in, beryl loads, I get a white screen, and then it restarts itself.

What a useless post. Unfortunately, the majority of us don't want to be fed with useless Microsoft junk just to be controlled over their monopoly.
