View Full Version : READ ME: Do Not Deal With "WaTTz"
Oversized Rooster
Mar 2nd, 2007, 02:34 PM
Hey guys, I just want to alert the traders here not to deal with the member "WaTTz". He must be a child!!!
I am selling a 160GB Laptop HD over on the buy/sell forums. This guy contacted me the other day expressing interest in my drive. We exchange a few PMs, and the last one stated that he was coming to downtown Toronto today and he wanted me to call him.
So I called him, and explained to him that I need to format the hard drive before selling it to him. I had some sensitive data on it. He said he was already on Queen Street in downtown. I told him that I cannot tell him exactly how many minutes this will take, but it should be about one hour. I told him that to be more convenient, I can drive down to Queen to meet him.
He said to call him when the format is near completion. He calls me just 5 minutes ago at 2:25PM. The format is at around 50%. He tells me how he has to go back home to Mississauga before rush hour. I tell him that rush hour begins at 5PM, and that we still have lots of time to meet up. He asks me why I can't just "stop the format" and give him the HD. I explain to him that the format must be complete, otherwise tomorrow he'll be calling me about why the HD appears dead.
At this point I also tell him that the format is likely going to need about 30 minutes more to complete. He then tells me that it is my loss, and to forget it. I point out that just yesterday I took the HD out of my laptop, and that's why it's not yet formatted. He tells me that I should have been prepared.
So, at this point I told him, "you should have warned me that you were coming so I can have it ready for you, *******!".
Plz guys and girls, do yourselves a favor and don't deal with this child. He has been completely unreasonable even after I offered to drive and deliver the HD to his current location at no additional cost. What kind of a person suggests to cut the power on an HD that's formatting?!

in Toronto, rush hour really starts at 3 on a Friday :)
Don't really have too much comment on the seller's side, but I think it's too much to ask others to avoid him just by this incident since you didn't really lose anything.

wow....
If he had given me that attitude I would've just literally pulled the plug on the HD and drive and meet him straight up so he would have nothing to say.
You already explained to him that pulling the power will result in hardware corruption, so the ball isn't in your court anymore. Its in his.
He reports the HD dead the next day? laugh in his face. He didn't listen to you.
Nonetheless, I agree very unreasonable and child-like behavior.

So he just forced a meet up time on you? Wow. Thats why I always set meet ups at least 24 hours in advanced.
Also, dont just use a fdisk format. Anyone with a few programs can recover 90% of the data. Download boot and nuke to wipe it for good. It took me 4 days to do a 3 pass wipe on 100gb.

you shoulda put a magnet to the drive and given it to the chump. or done a quickformat. you SHOULD have been prepared, he's right.

Did you actually setup a date and time to meet or did this guy just randomly show up and ask for the drive?
I can understand if he randomly showed up and you hadn't completed the formatting, but if you had a set date and time and YOU weren't ready, then I can understand his frustration.

If it wasn't ready, then it wasn't ready. No amount of pushing would change that.
Thanks for the heads up.

For a guy who has a lot of transactions, all being hard drives, you'd think he'd know a thing or two about the technology..
even his posts seem a little arrogant though, so its no surprise.
Gotta love newb sellers!

Is this an offer to drive the HD to his location (i.e. his home) to complete the transaction?
Or just to drive to meet up on Queen St?
I haven't dealt with Rooster personally but from his posts, he definitely seems like a reasonable person.
If the buyer just calls up and wants to complete the transaction on the same day, that is a hard call. As a seller, I try to arrange at least a 48hr window with a confirmed time, that way I can prepare and also show up on time to meet up. Plus, I always have my cell on me in case something happens that changes the plans.
G'luck Rooster, hopefully you guys can work something out. Or at least arrange another sale.

That's not completely unreasonable in my opinion.
If the drive wasn't ready, it should not have been posted for sale. Or at least a quick format should've been done.

You know what Rooster.. If you weren't such a dumb jerk in the first place then I would have waited. Who the hell calls up a buyer and says like some crack dealer... "Are you the guy that wants to buy a hard drive?" Not to mention he hung up on me 5 times after I tried to call back 45mins later to get an update. Talk about unprofessionalism. Sorry I tried to rush you so you could delete the porn and crap from your drive. Like I could care less about your worthless information.
Next time you should be prepared to sell the goods b/c people aren't gonna wait around and screw up their plans b/c you had to reformat your HD... JACKASS

Usually it takes between 4 and 7 days to sell a drive. I posted my drive as soon as I got it out of my laptop. You never stated that at a specific time you would be in downtown, so how can you expect that I am ready when you randomly are? I may have not formatted the HD yet, I may have been at the dentist, or a thousand other places.
You can't just drive over from Mississauga and expect that the seller is waiting here for you indefinitely with open arms amigo. And I don't know what you're talking about with hanging up. If you called my second line ending with 0960, then my sister may have hung up - I have no knowledge about this since we use that as our fax line. My sister hangs up immediately so as not to receive ads on our fax.
I have no reason to run away from your calls, seeing as how I am the seller, and also seeing as how we agreed that I would phone you when the drive was nearly completed with the formatting. I have nothing to gain by "hiding" from a buyer. LOL
And as I told you the first time we spoke on the phone, I have nothing personal against you. I simply feel better when I sell storage media that has been formatted. In all these times of trading here on RFD, I have NEVER EVER come across anybody selling a non-formatted, or at least wiped-out hard drive. It is a form of standard procedure.
I offered even to drive down to your current location on Queen Street so that you wouldn't spend additional resources and time to meet me in my neighborhood. I told you formatting will take about an hour. Why were you bothering me 30 minutes into the process? And what kind of a suggestion is it to power down the HD while it is still formatting?
I maintain a certain level of trading standard in case you haven't noticed. I offer my own personal warranty on the stuff I sell. I have easily, and painlessly offered refunds to people who weren't happy with my products. Why would I sell a dead hard drive; even to a pushy person like you? I don't rip people off amigo.
You were, and are being completely unreasonable. Besides, I am the one SELLING, so again as a common trading practice, it is the BUYER who should try to come to convenient terms because the BUYER wants something from the SELLER. If I don't sell to you, then I will to someone else in 24 hours. I won't die if I don't sell today. Plus I offered you to ship the drive out. As my thread states, and as people who have traded with me can tell you, I ship out with insurance and tracking. I offered you so many options; what did you want?!

I don't want to waste any more time on this. This is all becoming very juvenile.
It's as simple as this...You called me at 1:30, you said the drive would be ready in an hour...so I waited. I tried calling you a few times just before 2:30 to only get hung up on - no hello - nothing - just click.
I finally got through to you at 2:30 to see if it was ready, which it wasn't. You tried to give me the run around and I was trying to explain to you that, because it was 2:30 on a Friday and I live in Mississauga, I could not wait around downtown for another hour because of rush hour.
I don't appreciate being called an "A$$hole" and having you hang up on me in mid-sentence when I was trying to explain why I couldn't wait around. Why would you do that to a customer???
TIP: If you are selling something, you really need to work on your phone etiquette. You were very rude on the phone.
It's pretty obvious that you have some anger management issues buddy...Don't try to turn this around and make me look like the bad guy. I declined the deal because I had an appointment to attend to and I had to be out of downtown before rush hour. (FYI: If you take the Gardiner at 3:30pm on a Friday - it's already rush hour.) Maybe if you didn't hang up the phone on me, I would have been able to finish explaining this to you.
Anyways.. I don't want your HDD - WHICH...is okay. Just the fact that you created this whole "Don't Deal With WaTTz" thread proves that you are nothing but bad vibes.
I rest my case.

i dont know why u r selling something thats not even "ready" for sale. u should have formatted everything before you posted the sale up. its no different than taking a picture at the store and posting it up for sale. i think rush hour starts at 2:30 if i am not mistaken. ive seen the gardiner jam packed with cars beginning at yonge.
but if u offer to deliver it to a place near the buyer's location the next day, i guess thats reasonable but the buyer is probably pissed at the sale

Didn't the seller already know that the buyer was coming downtown the next day?? Therefore, you had adequate time to format the drive. You just decided to do it last minute. Could there have been more understanding on both sides? yeah. But this thread is unwarranted IMO.

OP, by posting it for sale, it should have been ready to go. Wouldnt say its completely your fault, but you should have told him first or started the reformat earlier.
His fault for giving you attitude, but i understand his frustration. and Yes, Toronto Rush hour starts at 3.

The onus is on the seller. I think anytime you put an item up for sale, you need to have it ready to go. It's akin to selling a product you do not have possession of which is against the policy. I would also add that the buyer had unusually high expectations for someone to simply drop what they're doing and meet up. However, had they pre-arranged a meet for that day in advance and the seller over estimated or mismanaged his time in preparing the drive, then I can see why the buyer would be miffed.

I don't think it has anything to do with the amount of posts a member has. There have been members with over 1000 points banned or suspended. He got banned (at least temporarily) because he posted some offensive comments in my for-sale thread. That was a personal attack.
I would not have been banned under any condition because I had the HD in my possession. If I was selling something I didn't have, then that's a fair case. Anyway, the HD has been sold on eBay the other day.
I still fail to see how I was wrong. There is NOTHING wrong with posting an item for sale which you might still be using. If you look at the forums right now, go check out and see people selling especially video cards which are still in their systems. That's no different than a non-formatted HD.
Just an HD takes an hour or two to prep, while a video card takes 10 minutes. The point here is that the buyer expected to just drop in out of the blue without warning me. And furthermore, this was AFTER we agreed on waiting about an hour for the HD to format. What am I supposed to do when the guy agrees to wait one hour, but then starts pushing me at 30 minutes? I don't wanna pull the power on a formatting HD. The guy will come back to me later asking me why the HD is dead.
Anyway, I am no angel. I have had my share of sour deals, but I do everything in my power to undo any wrongs. I offer full refunds to most stuff I sell. My item descriptions are always accurate, and if they are not, I simply buy the item back from the buyer. I even offer a 7-day warranty from myself for larger items (like this HD). Furthermore, I often drive completely out of my way to meet people up closer to where they live or work. I am at LEAST an average trader, but I like to think myself as honest and consistent. If you don't like me, don't trade with me. But I think I've done nothing to get onto anybody's list of bad traders. Try trading with me - see what the outcome is. I challenge you.

Well, from our limited knowledge about your case, it seems like the last PM you received was a mutual agreement that the deal would occur the next day, no? If so, you could have had sufficient time to format, wouldn't you say so? Correct me if I'm wrong.
I think it's bascially a misunderstanding between the two parties. From what I understand, the buyer seems to be somewhat free to decides he will spend the next day in Toronto, so asks the seller to call him up when he's ready. The seller decides to call the buyer the next day during the afternoon and realize that he's already there.
For the buyer, you should learn to provide at least 24 hour notice for the seller as well as yourself. I always like to confirm date and time of meet so that I know the other party knows what and when everything is happening.

A user with the most posts does not mean he or she is always right. It all depends on the situation and evidence given regarding the transaction.
In response to the OP's very first post on the situation:
I also agree that prior to the meetup, the "hard drive" should be ready for sale. If the seller doesn't have it ready, well, just tell the buyer that it isn't before making a commitment to meet. He's coming out from Mississauga, at least give him a break. And don't call people "children", just because you forced him to wait an hour for your lack of preparation. It makes you one too, basically.
As for Wattz, perhaps he should have been nicer to you, I don't know how he was like when on the phone to you, but things could have gone a lot better from what I am seeing.
lot of kids and teens on forums. respected? should we? hmm..
