I'll be heading to Vienna for a few days at the end of March and have the option of extending it for a couple more days. Is Salzburg worth the trip? Of the few people I spoke with, it's getting mixed reviews.

If you like Mozart and "Sound of Music", then YES, go nuts!

Its a beautiful city, but if you are already spending time in Vienna....
I can't really recall anything in Salzburg that really set it apart.
It would be a great place to go, but I don't think you will find much that you can't find in Vienna.

Yeah, it's good for about 2-3 days. Even if you don't like the "Sound of Music", just walking around the town makes it worth it. If you don't have the time though, you can just go on a day trip to Salzburg from Munich. Salzburg is actually closer to Munich than it is to Vienna.

Was there in November for 3 days visiting family who live right on the river 2min from centre of town. Great place to spend a few days and yes take a drive (1hr) to Munich or few hrs to Innsbruck Austria

Well worth it

If you have 3 days, you can split the time between Salzburg and Muenchen (that's Munich in Deutsch :) )

Salzburg is a really beautiful small city. There is a famous Salt mine nearby. Its cathedral (Dom) is the most beautiful one I have been to. Salzburg is 5 minute away from German boarder. It is amazing how Austria and Germany gives a very different vibe even thought they are both German and are beside one another.

in short...yes, it is an extemely tourisy town, but well worth it.
Don't forget to try the Moazrt chocolates!

Agree with splitting time between Salzburg and Minga (that's Munich in Bayerisch :) )

Oh yeah, and don't forget to eat a slice of Sacher Torte at the Sacher Hotel in Wien.

Salzburg is worth it for about 1-2 days.....about a 1.5 hour drive from Munchen.
I would not want to stay there for more than a weekend..

Check out the old forttress as well....and if you are in for a workout..then walk up to the fortress instead of the elevators....lol

i took a day trip to salzburg....it's not bad, but like others said, 2 days is enough time to spend. i actually managed to do it all in a day b/c i didn't go into any museums or anything.

if you have the time, you can go to bratislava, which is a couple hours east of vienna. it's pretty cool...and another passport stamp :)

I would say yes.

My wife and I enjoy exploring a city by walking as much as we can. Salburg fits this nicely. Wein is built on such a grand scale making this more of a challenge, but Salzberg is more compact making it much easier to do many wonderful walks that have a nice balance of city streets and walking paths.

We love hiking up on the mount with the old city wall to the pub at the top. Take binoculars and check out the city and paragliders launching off Giasberg

The walking on the mount where the fortress is is great, with a nice cafe up there. You can rent a bike and ride along the river.

If you like beer check out Augustiner Brau brew haus has been around for over 300 years. Stiegl is another brew haus that is in the area of the fortress, but I think the beer and atmosphere is superior at the Augustiner. The Augustiner is a place for the whole family with playgrounds for the kids, and even your dog is welcome. If you don't like the food that they have available you are free to bring in your own picinic.

You could head off to the tourist attractions such as the salt mine, but consider a lakeside walk in the Lake District.

Their art gallery is descent as well and since we are on the "Red Flag Deals" site check out http://www.europeancitycards.com/categories.asp?catId=12&subCatId=15&subCatId2=16 for great savings on city attractions. We buy one of these most times we go - its a great deal!

PS - you may have such a good time in Munchen that you may never want to leave. Rent some bikes and head for the English Gardens.

Have a great time.

Sorry for drifting a little OT. But this is one of the biggest rip-offs in all of Wien! :cheesygri

Even if you aren't a Sound of Music fan, the tour is worth it for the scenery in the lake district around Salzburg. (Or drive yourself if you have a car - the lake district isn't far, but very beautiful.)

Thanks all. I will include Salzburg. Is it necessary to purchase train tickets in advance? I'm used to Italy where you just walk up to a machine on the day of departure.

We bought the tickets a day in advance... I would definitely recomend that you visit Salzburg. But i agree that two days is more than enough. I only went there for a day. Hope you have a great Holiday.

I visited both Salzburg and Vienna... I definitely preferred Salzburg.

I just enjoyed the sights more, the old fortress, the architecture. Just for fun to look around and look at everything.

There are 2 trains to Salzburg daily from Vienna (as of Dec 06, at least. Around 7:30am and 2pm). I went to Gastein (via Salzburg) then right in the holiday times, the train wasn't full at all. That said, unless you are absolutely pressed for time, you should still try to get a ticket a couple of days prior.

Have fun

No kidding, the hike up the fortress is extremely demanding. It's only 15 minutes or so, but my legs can barely stand when I reach the top. However, the view from the top is gorgeous. When the weather is nice, one can even see the mountains in Berchtesgaden.:)

can you tell me what you did in bratislava? I looked around at some books/sites, and there doesn't seem to be much to do other than go around the old town and tour a castle.

Me also. Although we were in Vienna during a May 'heat wave' and it was just too hot. Really liked Salzberg.
