My gf and I will be visiting Rome for three days/two nights at the end of March.

Anyone have any good recommendations on where to stay and what area?

I have researched on Frommers, Let's Go Europe and read up on the previous threads on RFD.

My price range is around 120 euros for a double room with private bath.

The places that I have checked out are:

Casa Banzo (160 euros but looks really old)
Casa Howard (only rooms available are 180 euros and up)
Albergo Della Lunetta (120 euros with bath) <- might go with this one if they have availability.

I know we shouldn't stay near the Termini area. I have read people recommend staying near the Spanish Steps.

I checked out this place as recommended by a previous RFDer but not available for my timeframe:

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Try out the Daphne Hotel ... friends have stayed there and loved it. I was in Rome a couple weeks ago and stayed within walking distance to Termini, and it wasn't as bad as people said, IMO.

I found that venere.com was the best website to use to find accomodation.

The area around the Spanish Steps is pricey, however you can use Priceline.com ... the 5-star Intercontinential is reasonable (about $140 USD per night).

Good luck!

You know, the Termini area isn't really that bad, and it's very convenient for getting around. Plus you can walk back from the Spanish Steps area, no problem. We stayed at this hotel Domus Praetoria this past summer and were blown away with the value and service provided. Check it out on TripAdvisor.

darn it, just got a reply from Daphne Hotels....fully booked.

Any other suggestions? Is Rome really expensive to stay in if you are looking for a 3 to 4 star rating accomodations?

I find that most places are charing 130 euros and up, that is pretty pricey once you convert it to Cdn $$.

you'll be lucky to get the intercon on priceline below USD 200 (we tried last yr...kept going up to USD 200 and still wouldnt get accepted for apr 06)

we ended up staying right at spanish steps for 2 nits (killed our budget) coz the B&B near vatican cancelled on us.

Have fun in rome! careful w/ wallets/cameras!!!

I have stayed near the Termini station a couple times before and had no problems (no hassling nor did I feel unsafe). You can easily walk to all the sites and you would save a great deal of money.

Have you considered staying in a convent? My dad's cousin is a nun in Rome and I basically stayed at her convent. I got a single room all to myself with en suite bath with breakfast and dinner included and I didn't have to pay for anything. Although I felt bad for sleeping in their convent and eating their food for free so I basically paid around 30 Euros per night. The nuns were really friendly and very accommodating. The only travelers there were a couple of young German guys from Bavaria who had a relative who is also a nun at the convent. Anyway, I don't think you need to know someone who lives in a convent and I'm sure there are convents in Rome where they rent out available rooms to tourists. These would probably be cheaper than a hotel.

I'd stay here and be a pimp on the mountain.

Thats an option as my Mom and Sister did the same.

Uh, wrong country.

The only possible downside of staying in a convent is that they tend to have curfews so don't stay out too late. Also, they may not look too kindly on you and your gf staying in the same room. After all, that's a sin. ;)

hey guys, thx for the input.

The search continues.....

yeah a convent is out of the question, my gf and I will be staying in the same room for sure.

Around 120- 150 euros is ok with our budget, so I will keep on checking it out. Intercontinental is expensive!

This is a good idea. There is a convent right off Pizza Novona. It's failyr minimal accommodations, but the location is abso0lutely ideal and the nuns are very friendly. They also serve cheap meals.
