What I'm looking for: A cheap Wifi-G router
Where I want to buy: Preferably retail, don't mind online as long as reasonable shipping
Location: Montreal area
Price range: Below $50

I currently own a Linksys WRT54G and can testify that this is a piece of s**t. God I just want to beat it senseless with my aluminum bat, I need to reboot it almost every single day. I see there's a Trendnet TEW-432BRP for $49.99 - $20 mail-in rebate, but mail-in is a pain in the a$$, plus don't know if I should really trust this router. It has mixed reviews, rather get a brand name like DLink. Would appreciate any input, thanks.

what version of the wrt54g do you have? might be able to load a 3rd party firmware on it.

Which version is your WRT54G? You can try flashing dd-wrt (www.dd-wrt.com) on it which may help with the lockups. The linksys firmware is known to lock up with increased port traffic.

My WRT54G is version 2. The Firmware Version is v4.20.7, Aug. 18, 2005, which I think I checked for a newer version like last summer. I'll give it a shot with a 3rd party firmware, can't be worse than how it's behaving right now, thanks a bunch for the replies! :)
I'll update in a while, to tell you how the transition goes. ;)

i use this firmware myself: http://www.thibor.co.uk/
i just liked it over dd-wrt heh. theres quite a few versions out there, each with their perks.

Oh gosh, I just found out (by pure luck) what might have been causing the shortcomings of my router. By searching "dd-wrt versus thibor" in google, I ended up in a FAQ for µTorrent describing a problem it has with the WRT54Gx line when it has the stock firmware!! My roommate recently installed that software, but it was a problem even before he installed µTorrent. It was that buggy Linksys firmware causing the problem all along, damnit!
I hope the cursing will be all over soon... Either dd-wrt or thibor were recommended, what did you prefer w/ thibor nightwolf, out of curiosity?

personal preference mostly i guess. it follows the original linksys layout on the config interface, looks more professional for business use then the dark black stylings of dd-wrt. they both have pretty much the same features. i liked the forum community with hyperwrt when i had questions about adding stuff like snmpd.
try one and see how you like it, if you're not sure, try another.

Again, thanks for all the replies. I updated to the thibor firmware and right off the bat just surfing on the net seems 10x faster. Hopefully my WRT54G's constipation mode is over forever!!!:D
