from online? or do you go to travel agents? any recommendations? currently, we are at 1300 dollars to go to china.

Only buy tickets direct from the airlines. All middlemen do is jack up the price. If there is a problem, you arebetter off having to deal directly only with the airline.

Incorrect. In many cases, particularly on Asian flights, TA's have access to 'net' consolidator fares which can be cheaper and provide greater flexibility than tickets booked through the airline. For North American and most European flights, I agree, it is cheaper to book online through the airline.
