I'm trying to decide which would be more cost effective, going to my bank to exchange my cad for usd, or going to a currency exchange such as the custom house?

Your own bank will not normally charge you a handling fee. Currency exchanges and customs houses often do.
When I travel abroad, I normally carry as little cash as I can and use my credit card. If you pay it off right away there is no charge at all.
If cash is needed I check with my bank and see how much they charge for the ATM use in the country I am in. I then use it as little as I can but take out as much as I will need. That way the service charge is charged as few times a possible.
