Nintendo Wii Tops PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 in January (Update1)
By Michael White
Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co.'s Wii outsold Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 during January as consumers bought 436,000 of the video-game consoles.
Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 was the second-most purchased machine with sales of 294,000, followed by PlayStation 3 with 244,000, Credit Suisse analyst Heath Terry said today in a report, citing NPD Group Inc. data.
Wii is outselling PlayStation 3 by almost 2-to-1, the report said. Consumers have been attracted to Wii's price, at half the cost of the least-expensive PlayStation 3, and a wireless controller that can be swung like a bat or tennis racquet during play.
Both Wii and PlayStation 3 were introduced in November as competitors to the Xbox 360, which was released in 2005. Wii's $250 price tag compares to $499 and $599 for the PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 sells for $299 and $399.
Wii sales fell from 604,000 units in December, the smallest drop of the three consoles, Terry wrote. The Xbox 360 had the biggest decline, dropping from 1.13 million units while PlayStation 3 sales declined from 491,000.
PlayStation 3 includes a Blu-ray DVD player that allows users to watch movies in a high-definition format, in addition to playing games. Production snags with the player created supply problems during the holiday shopping season, forcing Sony to concede market share to Wii.

No surprise that Wii and 360 outsold POS3.

I guess they didn't produce enough Wii's for last month, since all the consoles were clearly sold out at all stores within minutes (at least here in Canada).

there is a 'sales' thread made by yourself already..
time to get off your high horse.. you're about to blow your load.
and this ain't about Wii vs. Ps3.. you can simply post sales numbers like how I do them WITHOUT BIAS

isn't it also because there are more wiis than PS3s? That could also affect the numbers. But Wii is also half the cost.

Nope, there are more PS3s available. Sony ramped up production quite well unlike Microsoft.
But Wii is also half the cost.
PS2 is 1/3 the cost, nullifies that argument.

So, do we blame it on a) Sony's piss-poor production capability, b) Sony's mistake of incorporating a Blu-Ray drive in the unit, or c) the fact that it's just the shittiest current-gen console on the market?

How about a d) all of the above (and this from a person that owns all 3 ):D
This should be merged...

Just as a comparison
January 2006 xbox360 sales - 250k (supply constrained)
January 2007 PS3 sales - 244k (not supply constrained)

Just as a comparison
I'm actually shocked the 360 outsold it for January. How much the Wii would sell were it not supply constrained would be mind-boggling.

I have a Wii. It was really hard to get (the PS3 was everywhere and in stock), but part of me still wants that 1080 HD experience that only the XBOX 360 and the PS3 give me. In the end it comes down to what games are out and what the console price is. If GTA 4 and MGS were out and the console was $399 or even, at a stretch, $499 I would buy it. I don't think its an anti-PS3 public out there, just a wait and see and hope the price falls public. That's really a shame that Sony had to be so arrogant and price themselves right out of the market, so to speak.

Microsoft is artificially making their sales look big by limiting the number of units produced. Scoundrels! Scoundrels I say!

I think that has to do with the $699 pricetag suddenly in most stores. That's just way too pricey after Xmas. The Cdn market really looks tiny compared to Japan and the US.

The PS3 will win in the end.A lot of people called the PSP over the DS too. Betting on who will win now is rather stupid.

i think the ps3 is an amazing machine, it can do a lot but at a very high price. blu-ray is amazing but expensive and it as a bonus feature, its like a personal computer. i find myself surfing a lot on the ps3 and typing word docs. i think sony put too much into this machine and drove the cost up alot. many people buy a console to just play games but sony thought adding so much function would attract more buyers. the wii is more fun in my opinion.

I had the PSP over the DS when you compared the looks. But Nintendo was so smart and redesigned that clunky mess ASAP to compete with the PSP better on looks. That move paid off so much (along with all those quirky games and even non-games like Brain Training).
But in the end, I think Wii will win both in overall profit and number of installed units. They can lower the price much faster than the PS3 and 360 can. And it seems to be that Nintendo has hit that sweet spot where the graphics are "good enough." 360 IMO will end up 3rd just because they can't seem to penetrate Asia. Competition is great. I'm still far more impressed with HD-DVD than Blu-Ray so far (once Blu-Ray gets their spec ironed out and the features supported properly, then it'll be much better, so far they're winning based on solid marketing) and I have my small laptop which can surf the web much faster than any of the consoles right by my side.
