When the new Xbox 360 arrives, I'll consider this generation to have arrived.

well i think the next "console release" will probably be a updated psp. Not a psp2 but more like one that has built in memory. I could see them targeting that new ipod iphone.

OP, you're really at it. This gen just started ;)
But this is what I think. Microsoft will most likely continue their "early release" strategy and screw their loyal customers over by shortening the life of the XBOX360 to 4-5 years, and I'm predicting XBOX3 will be released sometime in 2010. No idea what they're going to name it though, because they totally screwed themselves up by naming XBOX2 "360", and now they can't go back to numerical numbering system anymore. No, I don't think XBOX720 is a good name despite what the fanboys think.
By the way, I said Microsoft screwed their loyal customers over because the original XBOX had more potential to go longer than 4 years, but Microsoft released the 360 a little too early for technology to advance themselves. Just like how Wii is sometimes seen as a "updated Gamecube", the current XBOX360 to me is just an "updated XBOX" in contrast to the PS3. When rev2 comes in is when we'll actually see some action.
Microsoft could have NOT screwed their customers over by keeping funding available for the original XBOX even though the XBOX360 had been released, just like how Sony will keep a lot of resources on the original Playstation after the PS2 was released, and how they also keep releasing new PS2 games now that PS3 has released.
Sony will long play again. Despite what you guys think, Sony may have a bad reputation with quality assurance at times, but considering that Microsoft also had to recall tons of original XBOX/360s and power cords, Sony isn't very bad at all. What they're good at, though, is keeping their original base of the previous generation of gamers even after they released the new generation. Sony will keep the generation at least 6 if not 7 years, just like the gap between the original Playstation (1994) to PS2 (2000) to PS3 (2007). This is in contrast to XBOX (2002) to XBOX360 (2006). With that said, the Playstation 4 is most likely to be released in 2012 and later.
Nintendo will take the advantage of when the two other systems are released and pair up their release with one or the other, just like what they've been doing. They cannot make it into the hardcore gamers due to their history and background of games, so while sticking with kiddie games, they will have to sell gimmicks again to keep market share. They came up with something interactive this time around, and I really hope they can think of something good again when they release the new Nintendo system most likely in 2012.
===
By the way, one or two generations later, if Microsoft keeps shortening the generations to 4 years long, Wikipedia will start classifying perhaps two of their consoles together within the same generation. I would laugh if that happens, as that basically means they're wasting money and screwing themselves up.
However, if and when that happens, I'm sure Microsoft has already retreated from the gaming industry, as it's simply a road to failure to shorten the generation to 4 years in contrast to 6-7 years for the competitors.

The whole concept of generations is dying. It was never the greatest strategy with an overhaul every 5 or so years.
You can bet that many tech companies look at Apples yearly product upgrade cycle and salivate. Newcomers will buy the new models, tech freaks and fanboys will also re-buy the new models so they can have the latest and you get new buzz on each release.
Nintendo already does this with their handhelds. DS to DS Lite anyone?
Microsoft will release a new version of the xbox 360, call it xbox 360 HD with a built in HD DVD Drive and a much bigger harddrive, 200gb+. It will include better media playing functions without the need to stream crap from your media center PC. There may be some specially released enhanced HD-DVD games (Halo 3?). This in about 1-2 years.
Nintendo will release a Wii Plus with slightly upgraded specs, HD output and a built in upscaling DVD player. New games will be released in HD, but of course the Wii proper will still be able to play these games in up to 480p. This in about 2-3 years.
Sony will continue to shoot themselves in the foot. They already stated that the PS3 is intended to stick around for 10 years. This will be scaled back. And they will play catchup to fumble the release of another system in about 6-8 years.

I don't know about that.
Anyways, to the OP, you're going to have to give it about 4 years before they actually come out, but you might start seeing info come out in 3.

The 360 is already one year old so next gen in 2 years seems reasonable. With technology advances and breakthroughts can the gaming industry really stand idle with a gen every 4+ years. Consumers wouldn't tolerate it for any other tech products.
M$ deep pockets can afford a new gen every 3 years and dig deeper into Sony's domination as seen with their 1 yr 360 head start.
Wouldn't M$ corner the market with a new console with the best of Wii, 360 and PS3 features two years from now.

I think the original question was geared towards handhelds; My predictions are;
Nintendo - typical of their past practices, they will keep the DS for several more years, content to release new colours and special editions every time sales slow a little. They have a great installed base that is continuously growing - why kill the goose by releasing a new system which would require spending on development and subsidizing hardware costs.
Sony - the PSP platform has lots of life left if they can just get more interest in it. I see them releasing the much talked about 'updated' version that adds no new functionality, but uses a redesigned casing that is slimmer, made out of cheaper materials, and eliminates the UMD drive in exchange for a second memory stick slot (with future game releases on memory stick only).
As for home systems;
MS - the reason why MS had a short XBOX release was due to market share. It's simple economics, the longer a manufacturer can keep interest in a specific platform, the greater the period for them to lower costs and recover their initial R&D costs and subsidizing of early units. Given their current sales lead, I expect MS will keep the 360 platform for much longer than the XBOX1 was around. They've already started their first update by switching to the new quieter LG drives. They'll release an updated version with HDMI (for marketplace TV streaming), 65nm processor (cooler, quieter operation) and a larger HD, but no HD-DVD drive (why increase your unit cost unnecessarily?). I expect it by June this year along with a $50 drop in the premium and a $50 to $100 drop in the core. The HD-DVD will not be used for games for the 360 - it would be foolish for them to splinter their user base.
Sony - as I've already read some rumours, I suspect we'll see a slimmer PS3 with cheaper materials and no movie pack-in, along with a price drop released in Q3. They are continuing to support the PS2 because they have a large installed base and can still make money on it (as opposed to the gobs of money they are losing on the PS3). By putting a BD drive and HD in every PS3, Sony has really shot themselves in the foot as far as making a price competitive platform. Blu-ray is a waste for games as they only use a small fraction of the space so it is really in there to 'prop-up' their direction with HD movies (blu-ray was seriously lagging behind HD-DVD until the PS3's release). Unless there is a huge turnaround in sales, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony is the first one to release the next gen console.
Nintendo - same as the DS, in line with their past history, don't expect any increased functionality in the Wii. Just new colours and special editions every time sales start to slow down a little. The Wii will still be around after the next gen begins.

Bigger hard drive, yes, better fucntions, sure, but I can't really see Microsoft putting the HDDVD drive in the XBOX360 "built in" as they've always emphasized that they want to leave that decision to their customers.
Also, XBOX360 games will not be available on HDDVD if they do not build the drive in, which is highly likely, and Microsoft said they would be more willing to shot themselves in the foot by spanning games on 3-4 D-9s then put games on HDDVDs.
Nintendo will release a Wii Plus with slightly upgraded specs, HD output and a built in upscaling DVD player. New games will be released in HD, but of course the Wii proper will still be able to play these games in up to 480p. This in about 2-3 years.
I really can't see this happening either. Wii games were never intended for HD in the first place, and they don't need to. Their games on 480p are already quite good quality. A price drop would benefit them more than adding in HD, etc.
Sony will continue to shoot themselves in the foot. They already stated that the PS3 is intended to stick around for 10 years. This will be scaled back. And they will play catchup to fumble the release of another system in about 6-8 years.
Heck, the PS2 could have easily lasted 10 years, until 2010 too. Look at the big fanbase and continued games released on it. The question is whether or not that will happen.

Being able to afford it and actually doing it is different things. Just because large stores can afford to host more sales and make prices lower, will they? Obviously not, otherwise RFD would not be so successful.
And if I was a Microsoft fanboy and they started releasing new systems every 3 years, I would immediately jump camps. Do you really want to be wasting $500 on a new system every 3 years? Don't forget other costs such as new controllers, etc.
A 3 year generation is both unfriendly and uneconomical.

there might starting to change soon.. they might release new consoles every year.. why for?? upgrades, like computers.. are outdated every 6 months and needs upgrades.. they might start doing that to consoles. because as soon as something new is out for a console.. everyone will jump out there to buy the newests!

Despite what you think, not everybody wants to shell out $500 for a new console per year, not to mention 2x controllers @ $50 each and nowadays, DVD remotes @ $40 and cables @ $40.

There is a big difference between computers and console. Computer games are generally universally compatible. Console games are not universally compatible, at best they are backwards compatible.
Example:
You can play a Xbox game in Xbox 360.
You can't play a Xbox 360 game in Xbox
You can play any game made for Windows XP on any computer as long as it meets the requirements. (And depending where you get your OS, it can be cheap. ;) )
For console you spend money buying a new console each time.
For PC you spend money for the operating system, and upgrading parts of the computer as you need it. Not everyone needs to buy a new computer every 6 months. They come out with new computer parts each month, but it doesn't mean you need it. You don't NEED a Quad core processor. You don't NEED a video card that has equivalent processing power to another low power processing computer.
You can also connect any controller to a computer and configure the buttons.
You cannot connect a Xbox controller to a PS2 and still play the game properly.
In the future, console will mean an emulator on the computer. You will watch TV, play games, do everything from your computer. And soon your computer screen will be a big LCD screen in your living room.
Am I right? Or am I just dreaming? :D

The latter, I wasn't trying to offend him just wanted to point out his mistake, thanks for pointing out mine!
I think the wii will be able to last at LEAST 6 years, I say this because it's the only system that older people like playing with, which can give it long term appeal.

Yes that is true, you should give Nintendo a shout before they start making their next gen handheld system.
I mean the DS IS the top selling handheld on this planet...but all those billions of dollars they are making off it because the rest of the people on this planet actually like the DS is obviously for nothing as they didn't please you, the one person they should be pleasing with your 200$ of buying power.
just bugging you man. :cheesygri
