That seems a little high even if it is government operated...do you know someone who works there?

My info for Rama is about 5 or 6 years old. Regular table dealers were getting paid around $20-22 + share of tips.

The avg dealer in gatineau makes $70,000 a year. Each dealer can only work 7 hours a day and 4 days a week.Yes its very good pay but they really do not have much of a life.Even the people pushing the drinks around make 40 grand a year.THere is a big difference in pay between quebec casinos and the casinos run by the ont lottery. The rideau carleton race way pays there dealers $20 per hour they aslo get tips etc.

so the quebec casinos pay more then Ontario ones? i would think the tips are about the same in both sides? unless the % split ratio is different?
thanks for the info

I highly doubt Casino dealers make much. Looking at Vancouver or other US places' dealers are mostly minorities, I can tell this is not a well paid job. I am not being racist, this is just a generalization just like food court's workers are mostly minorities.

the skill level for this job does not warrant 70K/year plus tips.
i made a thread awhile back about my rogers install tech who told me he makes 80K/year...wouldn't everyone be lining up a casino dealer or rogers tech if this were true? definitely a disconnect here...

what's your source on the salary info?
do all table dealers have the same salary schedule? ex - does a boxman at the craps table get paid the same as a blackjack dealer?

i am pretty sure casino dealers need to be paid well.
it's the same principal with ceo's and the such, you want to pay them well because you don't want them to be corrupt or to steal. people who handle a lot of money but are paid poorly tend to be more corrupt then those who are paid very well.
also, i would expect the training process to be rigorous. learning every rule of most games (b/c they rotate through tables constantly) thoroughly. training them to be able to spot card counters, cheaters, scams, fake money etc.
don't forget that the casino business is very lucrative, so it's not like they can't afford to pay well...

I call BS on the 70K, I mean maybe if the dealer has been working there for a long long time then it might be possible.

Its 70 k for a year this is not over many years.Take the casino in gatineau on monday-thursday they avg 2000 people a day.On the weekend they avg 10,000 a day.Casinos are massive money makers.
Monty
I looked at working at this casino that is how i know as i had the chance to talk to some dealers. For the most part dealers get paid the same.A dealer that has been there 5 plus years get other perks as well. Its just sick how much money this casino makes even after paying all there staff. While i do agree they should not be paid this much they do have a heavy work load and alot of stress.

well the way I look at it is, dealers are one of those jobs where (if I was the boss and I am making a lot of money) I rather pay them well then have them bite me in the ass when they are dealing

Install techs at Shaw, Telus, Rogers etc will all be in and around that salary. That's not a starting wage though, that's near the top of the wage ladder for them. My uncle was an install tech with Telus, and when he took his buy out, he was making > $70K/year. A friend worked at Shaw in IT support, transfered over to installation because he would be getting a huge raise. They also work piece work, so if you're fast and group your installations together, you end up with lots of free time while you're still on the clock. Have to deal with all that union bs though.

I frequent the Casino in gatineau a lot and I don't think the dealers there make $50/hour
To my knowledge, dealers make around $20-$25/hr and pit bosses $30/hour
They have cameras everywhere *eyes in the sky* as they are called and yes I have seen dealers getting fired for pocketing one of those chips.
It's not a glamorous job but it's pretty well-paid considering the level of education required and I have seen a lot of dealers working there for the long haul (I was a regular between 1998-2000 and after an absence of about 5 years, I am now going back there again and I have seen the same faces)

I don't know if 50$ is an inflated figure but I can say that casino dealers work under very difficult conditions (stress-wise). The amount of stress endured while they are working is very high. They are required to concentrate very hard and non-stop while at the table. They have little lee-way (sp?) in terms of how they perform their job. All this leads to a very High-Stress environment...hence the 40-50K yearly pay.
my 2 cents.

No! It does not work this way... just because the company makes hordes of money does not mean it should share the profits with the front line.
Take a bank for example, they make billions a year but an average teller makes like 28K a year....
Take a retailer as another, they make billions a year as well but the cashier makes 25K a year...

The only reason why I would think Gatineau dealers would get a bit more is because they need to know how to count the cards in both english and french. But I'm going with 50-60k a yr...not 70k.

You don't have to learn every game. For the people I know working at a casino (charity one mind you) they start off learning Black Jack and have the option of learning other games through time, obviously you'd want to for job security.
Other than that, they aren't taught how to spot card counters, cheaters, scams, fake money (only if they notice someone who is obviously cheating will they tell a pit manager while going on break...have you ever seen a dealer stop dealing to go tell anyone that someone is cheating?). That's the job of what someone else mentioned as "the eye in the sky".

I would have to agree with you here. The blackjack dealers whom I normally see are just that: Blackjack dealers. Occasionally, i see a few folks doing baccara but generally speaking blackjack dealers deal blackjack and poker dealers stay on the poker side.
That's right, the dealers are not there to tell you if you are a cheater/card counter etc, that's the job of the pit bosses. I don't know if other casinos have this feature but basically for people who are too addicted to gambling, they can volunteer to have their pictures taken and if they are seen in the casino again, the security will come and escort them out. This has happened on more than 1 occasion in my table and the dealers have no way of knowing what's going on. Their job is to take/give out money and deal cards.

i have had friends who dealt cards in Montreal's casino , they said the moneys really good and went on vacation all expenses paid just by there tips for a month . they get paid a good amount of base salary because of there job, in positions where money is a key factor they pay well to ward off stealing or throwing games.
50-70k after tips dont sound to bad to me, those tip jars are always full whenever i see them .
i do remember there is restrictions though like you cant work/play in other casinos in the province as well as a couple other things.

You can play at other casinos in the province after a certain "probational" period. Other things you mention include not being able to have family/friends play at the table you're dealing at.

Hmmm...70K a year to deal cards in Montreal? This is what dealers make in the hottest economy in Canada:
http://www.itsnopalace.com/low_wages.cfm
In Alberta, the average casino worker makes less than $18,000 a year. That is $8000 under the poverty line for a family of three. The average hourly wage is $8.71.
Palace casino claims it pays the highest wage in Edmonton. However, calculations made by the union find that the average wage for dealers at Palace Casino is $8.80 an hour. For workers in the food and beverage area, they make only $7.01 an hour – basically the minimum wage.

Those numbers don't include tips, which can be quite substantial. None of the dealers I know live below the poverty line...

Rideau Carleton Raceway & Slots is called just that because the only gambling action there is on slot machines. I'm not a big gambler, but last I checked slot machines weren't on the payroll and didn't accept tips.

I'm very tempted to elaborate on the subject but I'll keep it simple. I used to work at the MTL Casino and all I have to say is entry-level, I was making average $21/hr including tips. Tip was about 1/3 of that amount. So ~40K ~50K a year sounds about right. For the amount of responsibilities that you have, which I found was really minimal, that's a really good salary.

I saw these people hanging around outside the casino in West Edmonton Mall. I didn't know that they are getting paid so poorly. But when I work in compusmart in that mall, I was getting paid 7 dollars plus commission. One bad month will be at most $8.50 and a good month only gets you paid $10.
People are seriously shorthanded in the mall probably due to low wages. I quit my job after 3 months. Wasn't work my time and effort trying to put sales in for these people.
