I'm graduating from Western this year with a BSc in Biology and moving to Kingston. Now I know it's not the best place to find a decent job but does anyone know the area and have any suggestions as to where to apply? I'm thinking of going back to school again in september too. I've looked all over the job posting sites and all I can seem to find are retail jobs or restaurants. Is this what I have to look forward to with my BSc?

With a Bsc in bio, you can look forward to doing research/getting into med school/lots of oppertunities - dependent on your grades/extra-curricular/work experience.

Consider moving to Toronto or continuing with a masters.

I'm attending Queens (Comm '09) currently.

Well so far the only sort of job that I have found in Kingston relating to my degree is at Queens. The biggest problem I'm running into is that they want at least 2 years of experience. The only experience I have is what I have done in my labs.

I've always wanted to get into med school but I just don't think I'm ready to write the MCATs. Maybe someday though....

I'm sure it wouldnt hurt to apply, but not having any work experience (paid lab experience counts) means you have to make up for it in other ways (good interview, lots of extra-curricular).

Yeah I've applied to a few. The only problem is that they're 1 year contracts and I don't quite know yet if I should go back to school in september or not. I guess I should make up my mind soon.

if a masters degree is an option... do one.

I've talked to a few schools about doing a masters. I'm really starting to hate London and don't want to be here anymore so I don't want to do a masters here. Most school I have talked to look at their own graduates first for masters programs and then consider 'outsiders'. My problem is that my borderline marks leave me with almost no hope of getting accepted anywhere.

It's quite the situation I'm in. I've gone to both academic and career counsellors here and they were a joke. One of them, after explaining my situation to them, said to me: 'Well I guess you have a lot of decisions to make'. I was like... wow... really? You think so? Thanks for the help. I know they're not there to make my decisions for me but she didn't even offer any advice.

Well, in that case, working for a few years (1-2) can really help you become a more competitve candidate for doing your masters (which i recommend). In a field like research, they dont tend to look up to people with Bachelors.

Alright I'll look into that.

Any idea where else to apply besides Queens for a research position? For any position actually!
