I saw a position online last week at Staples. I went in last Tuesday filled out their application form, and also submitted my resume. The manager in charge told me they need some more people for this position.
I still haven't received a call yet for an interview or anything, is it safe to say I'm not qualified or eligible?
I really wanted this as P/T since its so close to me.

no one has a clue im guessing.. ?
would it be best to walk into the store tomorow, and speak to the manager on duty, and ask if my resume and application been passed through HR or something related?

If they haven't call they probably didn't accept your application or lost it or something.

find the person whos in charge of HR, or new hirees. And tell them youre following up on your application and wondering if they have any ideas or soemthing along the lines of that

Dude, I think it's normal.
Last year around this time I was hunting for a job and I filled out an application to the Barrhaven Staples. I kid you not....JUNE I get a phone call saying they found my application and were very interested in meeting with me.
This is the dead time of the year. Be prepared to wait for a retail job because no one has any money from the Christmas rush. June will be time (roughly) for back to school to start to pick up...that's when you'll get the call and they'll need you.
I'd suggest you find another job in the meantime to occupy yourself. I wouldn't hold my breath for staples to call me anytime soon.
Good Luck

Thnx for the help guys!
@akky - Markham Rd location
Would it hurt, if I walked in say Friday and ask the manager on duty, and see how my resume/application form went. and basically just say I wanted to follow up on it?
Only reason I want this job, is because its very close to me. Also I only have night class 2 days a week. So basically every other day I'm left with nothing to do. Only reason I applied for this, because I saw the position listed on Monster.ca.. otherwise I wouldn't have applied.

How's your work experience, if you have retail experience already, it's easy to get in if they need people.

I would have to agree with him here. During this time of the year, pretty much all stores are dead/slow since everyone is still flat broke after the Christmas/New Year frenzy. Usually employers don't hire any new employees during the month of January - April. Than during April/May, stores start hiring people and begin training them for summer rush.
The only exception that I can think of is Grocery stores, like Loblaws, No-Frills, Food Basics, etc. They tend to have a fairly steady flow of customers, since they deal in essential goods (i.e. food), and everyone can't suddenly stop buying food and eat. Whereas people can take a break off buying non-essentials, like a new computer, pen, etc.

lol, you're just there shopping, how can you hate the GM?
But yea I've got retail experience. I might pop in this Fri and see if it went through and whatnot.
I don't remember the Managers name, however I know how she looks like. She was like "I would shake your hand, but my hands are sticky right now". I was thinking.. what were you doing before I got here lol

usually takes 2 weeks before you get a reply..but if they're desperate..then you should've gotten it within the week if they were considering you.

The GM that works there, is she a middle age Chinese woman with short black hair. Whenever she shows up, I never have any luck with my PM.
She's bad karma, let me tell ya!
And don't get me started with the Kennedy/Steeles Staples. That place sux ass!

My condolences.... ;)
Hope your management staff doesn't beat you too badly on pushing extended warranties. I'd recommend being an "aisle" person, specializing in pens and binders, rather than the computer crap. No ESP to worry about! :D More "finding stuff" but less "special knowledge" needed.

Had my interview today.. it went ok. Until she mentioned will you be comfortable standing in one spot for the majority of the day as "Customer Service" then I'm like.. I applied for P/T Computer Sales Associate. Then she says we're mainly looking for someone who can do fulltime Customer Service. Then she started telling me, some people started as Customer Service then got promoted.
I have actually never done Cashier before.. so I felt uncomfortable about this position. I then told her, I would like to put this on hold and think about it.
U guys think I should do pretty much fulltime Customer Service?

You might have just shot yourself in the foot.
If you want the job, you have just one chance left - and that's to call within 24 hours and tell her you want it - with great enthusiasm.
If it's close to home, there's nothing wrong with being a cashier - it's good experience. Almost BETTER than Business Machines.

What BlueMax said, as a cashier you're not shoveling printers around by the skidload throwing them up onto the aisle tops. But you really want to work f/t at staples? Are you taking your mental health into consideration here? Have you considered the ramifications?

Usually when you display some sort of hesitation during an interview they won't hire you based on the fact that you may not commit and waste their time training you and giving you a uniform and going through the process that hiring someone new takes.
When you apply somewhere new, it's always good to call back and show interest and initiative. Next time you apply somewhere indicate the position you want and drop it off in person (not dressed like a schlub) and then call back in a week or so because every time you call they are going to pull your file and look at it and if you can imagine your resume is one of many... so everytime they pull your file they are grabbing it, looking at it and then putting back to the top of the pile :)
And also keep in mind, sometimes you have to start at the bottom to get where you want and around this time of year its going to be hard to find a retail kind of job based on the die down after all the holidays.
Good luck and I hoped this helped.

Hahah! I dont mind shoveling printers and loading skidloads of whatever. But I really want to be walking on the sales floor, as opposed to standing in one area working the cashier, and taking returns and whatnot for a fullday.

Yea I really displayed hesitation. I'm sure she noticed it. But I had a feeling she was willing to take me in, because she was looking @ my availability, and she kept saying they really need a F/T Customer Service person. She also mentioned since I know some technical knowledge on computers it would save them time calling up a Computer sales associate, each time a person needed technical information. Since I would be that person.
Anyways at then end she needed pieces of reference from me I had one of where I worked, however the 2nd place where I worked I left the reference @ my uncles place in Missisauga, when I worked there like 5 yrs ago.. she left me with a business card with her number and told me to phone her back when I get that piece of reference. I know this probably doesnt related, but I think if I really wanted this position I couldve gotten it since I was chinese and so was she lol

i notice retail jobs are like that...
they really do seem to throw half the pile in the garbage.
I remember applying for one position @ home depot. I had a friend that was really close with the manager. He recommended me, and directly gave my resume to him. I never got hired.
I then discovered that an old acquaintance of mine with the EXACT same qualifications (we went to the exact same school/same year/even worked @ a supervisory position @ another company @ the same time) as me and got hired!
