Here are some pics of the laptop I just bought from Darwin.

Model is 0768-DDU. I believe these are the models compusmart is liquidating

the exterior shell is silver, not the standard thinkpad black:
http://www.animeiku.com/temp/lenovo/DSC_0001.JPG

the LCD lid and hinge have a nice solid feel with no bending or recoil. Atop the screen is the small built-in camera. There is no thinklight
http://www.animeiku.com/temp/lenovo/DSC_0004.JPG

keyboard is black, with nice orange accents. Some people think it is ugly because it does resemble a retro 80's scifi look, but it works very well here and easy to follow. There is no fingerprint reader on this model. I wished they had incorporated a thinkpad nub instead of the touchpad. The touchpad has a nice responsiveness, more so than the satellites. But the touchpad buttons are too loud and too small. Speakers are also more tinny.
http://www.animeiku.com/temp/lenovo/DSC_0005.JPG

side view. you get an additional 3 USB ports on the right side
http://www.animeiku.com/temp/lenovo/DSC_0007.JPG

compared to my satellite M100-JG2
http://www.animeiku.com/temp/lenovo/DSC_0009.JPG

side view. the M100 is a 14.1 incher, but has the same thickness
http://www.animeiku.com/temp/lenovo/DSC_0013.JPG

comparison of screen
http://www.animeiku.com/temp/lenovo/DSC_0015.JPG

both screens set to a complete white background. The Satellite M100 is equivalent to the a100. M100 uses Trubrite and is set at maximum brightness with calibration. Notice how even taken from the M100's optimal viewpoint, the Lenovo is brighter
http://www.animeiku.com/temp/lenovo/DSC_0016.JPG

comparison of the m100 (the a100 has a few extra buttons) and lenovo keyboards
http://www.animeiku.com/temp/lenovo/DSC_0019.JPG

Ugliness is subjective. You never get high-quality design and finishes with budget notebooks. Expect to pay at least twice as much to get anything really nice. Just look at the Vaios as an example.

Excluding the cost of the battery, the price of this laptop is on par with a desktop of similar components. Now factor in the battery and portability. This is a steal. For the same price of an Acer Core duo, you will get core 2 by IBM/Lenovo.

Guy say priced still 999.99 maybe update later so I buy two and hope go back for price protection later.

What is good about it anyway?

I already get Vista. Can I sell one include with laptop as oem later?
You can go back right now for your price protection, you must tell them that they have $500 instant rebate(multiple instant rebates) like the op says, i have the same problem in MTL the clerk told me the price is $1199.99, i said no way check your system, after he checked his system he said you're right but at the cash the same problem so you must ask for the discount.
MTL downtown 13 english version and 15 french version. (oops just 14 french version)

No i don't take the printer, don't need it and i don't want to fight for the $80 rebate

seems that lenovo has a rebate program let you upgrade from xp home to vista home premium for free (after rebate)That's not what I see. Looks to me like a rebate to make the upgrade to Vista BASIC for free.

http://www.pc.ibm.com/ca/promotions/rebate_centre.html
Free Upgrade (less shipping and handling) mail in rebate (http://www.pc.ibm.com/ca/promotions/vista_uprade_rebate.pdf)
to Vista Basic with the purchase of select PC's

Here's the pricing for the upgrade: Quantity Upgrade software Language Item price Total price without shipping and handling
* Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit CD/DVD English CAD 50.66 CAD
* Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit CD/DVD English CAD 84.47 CAD
So it looks like you pay for the upgrade, but if you choose BASIC then you can get an MIR to rebate the price of the upgrade (not including shipping/handling).

I know you trying to help us, but are you sure? from compusmart website:
"Return Policies
If for any reason you are not completely satisfied with your purchases within 30 days of your original purchase date, CompuSmart will give you a full refund or exchange, in accordance with the following details.

Return the product within 30 days of the original purchase date (14 days for Desktop and Notebook Computers, Monitors, Projectors, Printers, Camcorders, Digital Cameras, and Digital Audio Players) in its original condition and packaging (including UPC code, all manuals & accessories), along with the original sales receipts.

Please note that a 15% restocking fee will apply to the return of items in open packaging.

All defective products will be repaired or replaced according to the original manufacturer's warranty terms and conditions.

Due to copyright laws, all software, including CDs and DVDs in opened packages may only be exchanged for the same item (i.e., no refunds). Defective software will be exchanged for the same title. Unopened software may be returned for a refund or exchange within 30 days of purchase.

Liquidation or clearance items, special order products, open printer toner and ink cartridges are not eligible for return."

bullet
Feb 10th, 2007, 09:15 PM
hey man, thanks for pointing that out

according to my store, its 14 days for notebooks. As for being clearance, it should not matter, because if that is the case, then ALMOST all laptops and desktops would not be eligible for return. plus some of the notebooks sold were open box, so, i wouldnt worry about not having your 14 days.

I will get this cleared up, but for the guys who bought one, keep in mind you do have your 14 days , and it all depends on the csr at the store if he/she to charge you a restocking fee. I know at our store, we dont charge you that fee if its in the box and the box is not all crushed up. it has to be in the same way that you bought it.

Two important issues,
1. The Lenovo website says this unit has a Fingerprint reader while the actual unit does not?

2. Has anyone put Vista on this and gotten the Sound to work? I have tried the Windows Default Drivers, the Lenovo Vista Audio Drivers (Realtek - automatic does nothing, manual install gives a bluescreen), the Lenovo XP audio Drivers, (Installs but doesn't play sound)

How is it that lots of other Compusmart stores can offer a lower price for the same laptop and not the Victoria store? Haha, sadly I can only change prices in the Calgary locations, and they would probably ignore anything I told them. If you head into their store, you could maybe try to get them to call me out here, and I can confirm pricing over the phone to them. They shouldn't really be able to refuse price changes directly from head office.

I just picked it up from the Westend one and they had lots there. The price tag that they have is 999.99. I spoke to the clerk helping me out and he kept on insisting that it was 999.99. So I advised him that I had it on good authority that it was 799.99. His manager looked it up on their special site and agreed that it was 799.99. It also comes with a printer.

It's not really the weight that bugs me, but the size of the screen and dimensions of the laptop. I currently lug a 14.1" laptop to University, and I find that even 14.1" is big for the small desk space in some of the lecture halls.

Ah hold off a week while all the store start to switch to Vista based models this wont be the last sale. HP is going to switch by the end of this month that is why you see them on sale at FS and BB. More store will be selling HP XP based models at a lower cost in the coming 2 weeks

The release dates on the new HP is Feb. 23-28 so the stores have to have hp-xp models till then, then they will shell out all the old models at a clearance price for the warehouse space.

http://www.pc.ibm.com/ca/promotions/rebate_centre.html
Free Upgrade (less shipping and handling) mail in rebate (http://www.pc.ibm.com/ca/promotions/vista_uprade_rebate.pdf)
to Vista Basic with the purchase of select PC's

* Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit CD/DVD English CAD 50.66 CAD
* Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit CD/DVD English CAD 84.47 CAD
So it looks like you pay for the upgrade, but if you choose BASIC then you can get an MIR to rebate the price of the upgrade (not including shipping/handling).

Where did you find that you can upgrade to Premium for $84.47? I can't find this. I am thinking about getting the laptop, but I really want Vista Premium (not Basic).

I see it now. If you go to the upgrade site and enter all of the information, it shown to you.

I wonder if you order Premium if you can still get the rebate for Basic. So that you would only have to pay the difference between Premium and Basic.

through ibm/lenovo website US, these is a pdf file says can upgrade to Vista Basic or Premium free after rebate.
BUT only for purchase made in US, NOT CANADA!
so sad!

Where did you find that you can upgrade to Premium for $84.47? I can't find this. I am thinking about getting the laptop, but I really want Vista Premium (not Basic).

I don't think buying extended warranty is good.
We bought this bcs it's a great deal at low price..but plus extended warranty? no..cost a few hundrand bucks more, almost equivalent to half of another laptop..why bother that...
Nowadays, deals are always there; laptop configurations update so fast..I don't expect I will use the same laptop for more than 4 years..in case this one is broken down after one year, find a great deal to buy a new one then..

That's a pretty lame answer. The laptop only comes with a one-year warranty and yet you expect to keep yours for 4 years. Heck, I would consider even getting an extended one-year warranty for this baby, and then sell it off before the ext warranty expires since technology will make this so outdated by then.

Plus if you'r going to sell it before the warrant expires (2 years), is there so much difference if it's still within a warranty or not?
Anyway, let's not argue on this..everybody has his own perspective:lol:

Apparently there are still some available here in Edmonton. I'd be willing to pick a few up and ship them if anyone is interested. Buyer would pay all shipping + insurance costs, plus a $50 service fee. These costs probably turn this into only a warm deal, but maybe it works for someone. BTW, there is no PST in Alberta, but there is a Gov't computer recycling levy of around $10.

I would have to receive payment in full via Paypal prior to shipping.

Actually, the lack of PST in AB means that buyers in ON, for example, save $63. Service fee + recycling levy should more or less even that out. End result would be ON residents getting it for approximately the advertised price (within a few dollars either way) + shipping/insurance.

How did you manage to get the deals on the bag and the lock? Plus how did your warranty come to $159.99? I bought extended warranty 3 years and ended up paying $279.99? Also, you really do not have warranty for 4 years, as they include the first year manufacturer's warranty in your 3 year extended warranty, or at least that is what I was told.

I'm so weak...

I decided to bite on this deal since I've been kind of thinking of replacing my 2 year old Dell Inspiron 6000.

My total:

Laptop: 799.99
AB recycle levy: $5.00
HP D4160 Printer: 99.99
AB recycle levy: $8.00
Instant Printer Rebates: $41.99
(mail-in rebate for $50 US)
GST: 60.18

Grand Total: $931.17

And I bought it using my PC Mastercard, so I doubled the one year warranty for free.

Thank so much, OP!

Edit: Oh, any salesperson who tries to tell you that the rebates are the same, therefore they will only honor one, is full of ****.

The instant rebate codes (each for $100) are: SWH-25-1480 AND SWH-25-9032.

I didn't catch the name of the guy who helped me in downtown Edmonton, but he is listed as "Sales Rep: 51" on the receipt. He was very helpful and easy going...

I have a PC Mastercard and it will not double your warranty on the laptop. Other people have mentioned this in various other threads too.

The PC Mastercard Extended Warranty does not cover:
1. used, rebuilt or remanufactured items;
2. computer hardware, accessories or peripherals, computer repair or software; or
3. automobiles, motorboats, airplanes, motorcycles, motorscooters, snowblowers, riding lawn mowers, golf carts, lawn tractors or any other motorized vehicles (except for miniature electrically powered vehicles intended for recreational use by children) or any of their respective parts or accessories.

Can someone please tell me in plain english what the best price at the till can and maybe? $799? Do you need coupons/codes? or is this supposedly located in their computer when they scan the product?

Very confuzzled.

Thanks

I've got a couple left at the Northwest Calgary location, if anyone is interested. Ask for Scott :)

Are there any left at your location?

Since I was unable to get one in Saskatoon, I could get my brother to pick one up as he is close to your location.

EVERYONE THANK BULLET, also known as Darwin!

THANK YOU DARWIN!

Compusmart should promote you as their head sales person!! HURRAY!

Very true. I sincerely hope he is pointing to these threads whenever his performance review comes up. I'd be suprised if any other single salesperson were responsible for so many sales across the country.

hey guys thanks for that kindness there, unfortunately this company doesnt find it necessary to give a simple thanks to a single sales person for such a huge sale. Its funny that the books i read in university are in no way equivalent to the ways they treat their employees, but hey what can ya do right, as long as i know i did a good job, that makes me feel better and a better person.

i even tried to see if i can get our store to ship the leftovers from all over the country to our store, the answer remains to be uncertain about that, i was trying to get the gta people in on the deal since we are all sold out. ill keep ya guys posted.

i set this lenovo up for my aunt today, man it is pretty good. im happy i got one too.

Hey Darwin,

I find it hilarious to because all the stuff I learn about employee's being the resource of a company and how to motivate people properly, it never applies at my company either. :(

Thanks for Readflagdeals.com. I got this deal.

I found that the setup paper of the notebook indicates the integrated camera for specific models only. I try to test the built-in webcam. The system continuous displayed that no webcam detected.

I have the model N100 0768-DDU.

Anyone got the built-in webcam working? If yes, how and what model you have?

Thanks,

Ha! Yep - the cold reality is that for all the corporate bluster about employees being a company's most important resource, employees are typically considered little more than easily replaceable cogs in a giant machine.

First off I want to thank Bullet for alerting us to this great deal!!!

I have been perusing the forums for the last three or four months looking for the too good to resist deal. My budget was $699, and this ended up being $100 over but for the Core 2 Duo it was irresistible. Anybody who waffles on this deal will wake up with a bad hangover after the last one is sold.

I picked one up this afternoon in Edmonton. In my case, I didn't want the printer since I didn't want the hassle of getting rid of something I do not need. I am not a fan of the whole rebate process. I was allowed to purchase the notebook sans printer.

First impressions are:

Excellent bright screen, very fast processor, runs very cool and is very quiet. Intel 3945a/b/g card has excellent reception (I can see at least 40 routers) but unfortunately most people are smart enough to enable security on their wireless routers. This is a new, not refurbished notebook.

Weak video card, no express card slot, touchy touchpad.

As for bluetooth the 0768-DDU does not come with bluetooth. I think you can add this as a spare part, probably a low cost. It also does not come with a fingerprint reader. It does come with a builtin camera. After you register and setup the software, there is a Scanners and Cameras Wizard you launch and voila! Simple.

You snooze on this deal, you lose.

Apparently the Victoria store is run by a bunch of jerks. I sent the information of this laptop deal to a friend who really wants a laptop and this deal meets their budget and needs.

They made a trip to the Victoria store first thing this morning when it opened today at 11am. The sales clerks were a bunch of jerks and refused to honor the instant rebates and refused to sell the laptop for less than $999 saying the store manager had to approve the instant rebates, and of course the store manager doesn't work on Sundays.

Bullet's inventory check shows they have 25 of them.

I intend to talk to the store manager tomorrow and confront whoever it is that their employees should have worked out the deal for my friend.

Moreover, the Victoria store seems to never have items they advertise as being on sale. They'll always take your name...and your money...and call you.
I figure that's one reason why the place is always empty when I go there.

I was in the costco beside the roydon store right afterwards and saw a display of laptops with a salesperson and it included the lenovo 3000 but I couldn't be sure of the exact specifics but it was 899! still not bad

I bought a Lenovo 300 N100 yesterday ( Sunday ) from the Eaton Centre store.
Overall great but I don't like the screen , it's too glossy for my tastes and the speakers aren't loud enough although that can be remedied by getting some external ones.

Anyway , I'm selling it because I refuse to give away 15% to the store to re-stock it.

I deleted a couple of ISP offers and did a full Norton scan which came back perfect.

I did register my name on it but hopefully that can be removed easily enough.

If anyone's interested : 416-890-8848 ask for Tom

I don't recall exactly but I can tell you the Manager downloaded the newest version of IE first . It takes a while even on this machine. After he did that , the top right portion of the new browser still had the discoloration. This was easily remedied by going to START ,then MY COMPUTER , CONTROL PANEL , Appearances and Themes . Under pick a task , choose -Change the screen resolution . This will bring up - Display Properties . Here you will choose - Settings.

This is what my notebook reads in the Settings section:

Display: 1. Plug and Play...
Screen Resolution: More
Color Quality: Highest (32 bit)

When I went to the site to redeem mine, it was free (+shipping) for Vista home Basic and $84 (probably US) for Vista Home Premium.

edit.. just got my order confirmation and it was $84CDN plus $27 shipping! what a ****ing rip off.

That should do it.

It worked just by changing my settings to 32-bits!
Thanks!

I called the downtown Montreal store today hoping that I could somehow purchase one via phone using credit card and pick it up when I'm in Montreal in a couple of weeks. It took some convincing after they initially said they couldn't do it (because of fraud concerns) but after checking with the manager, etc, they agreed to do it for me. I also got the free (AR) HP printer with it.

I bought the French version but they still had one English version left as of earlier today. I dealt with Jean-Francois and he was very pleasant and professional to deal with.

I got in on the deal! :cheesygri

Thanks to RFD I also picked up the extended 9-cell battery from Lenovo for $79 using Visa perks.

I just picked up one unit yesterday, (was sooo happy to find one) and today we were told about slowdown at work, so I'm giving it up. It is still sealed in as box, didn't have a chance to take it out yet. I had to drive out of town to get it, so I'm asking $1000 o.b.o. to cover some costs. It is available for pickup in Hamilton or for someone forom Toronto I can meet you 1/2 way. PM me with contact info if interested.

sidshock
Feb 19th, 2007, 05:40 PM
got mine for the CHEAPEST price, I think..
so I called everywhere on SUNDAY for it in ONTARIO, all sold out.
EXCEPT for, the niagara falls one had ONE, but on HOLD.
so I finally called St Catherines and they had ONE display unit.
I put it on hold and drove down there, and I was a little upset at the onboard video and I wanna play CnC 3 this march, so I decide for the A100-TA9 which was on sale for 1399 and with 2GB ram and 160GB HD. It was also the LAST display model. I ask for a discount since it is the display model, and he says NO! I take it home, set it up, notice 2 STUCK lit on pixels.
I play with it some more, and I notice the KB is WAAY too small.
My old T42p felt 100x better.!!
so I pack it all up, I start to drive down there, and in the mean time, I call niagara falls to see if that one is still on hold. Nope, guy picked it up!...
So I get to the store in HOPES that no one bought the display model left.
and luckily, STILL there.! So I return the Toshiba, and tell them the problem with it. Also, do not get this, it is too big, and screen not so nice, the lenovo is 100x better feel and build, only thing is, the a100 had a go 7600 video card with 128!
So the girl there is a little new, so she needed some guidance to do the rebates/price break, etc... I go browse, I come back, and then I ask for any printer rebates.
Guy says yes, the HP 4160. I pay $58 and get a $50 USD rebate coupon, so I say OK.
So I pay, and leave... and as I hit the highway, I scan my receipt, and notice 1099 -200 instant rebate. But that's it. So I'm like "F"!
I drive back and get another older lady, she kinda remembers me as she saw me come in earlier and exchange, so I tell her the other lady missed the "multiple" rebates which was the $300 price break. So she sees the label of the laptop sale saying 799 and 200 and 300 price breaks listed.
so she goes to refund me $300!. She gives me $300 back on my interac!.
so basically, I paid: 899+ tax originally, which was: 1025.99
Minus $300 back = $725.99 TOTAL with TAX for me for this laptop!! (woohoo!!)
I leave, and sure enough, my phone rings 10 min later.
The OTHER girl says she could'nt do multiple rebates, so she brought the price down herself to make it 799. Now this is wrong, as she made it go down to only 899 ( her mistake ! ) but the other girl made a mistake to refund me 300 instead of 100 + $14 tax I paid on the extra $100.

btw: While this is nice, an ACTUAL Thinkpad is a bit better for sure, and better KB feel, options.
So this is gunna be a stop-over for me until I can get a t60p for sure!

ALSO: Whoever else bought this, please tell me what was included, since I got an open box.
I got the laptop, power adaptor/cable and manual in a plastic bag.

I was wondering if any SD adaptor came so I can use a DUO card? or CF card?? or is the slot limited
to only a SD? Most laptops come with a 5 in 1.
AND lastly, since I have the store demo, I wanted to restore it to original, but there is no OTHER partition to
redo the laptop with NOR a CD to redo it with.

thanks.

Thats why you see 99% of laptops with Vista home basic because it is the only one that OEM providers will get free upgrades for. I recently read a whole article on OEMs and Vista licences. Acer is the only one that has raised this publicly because they are not happy with the Vista basic that they are forced to provide with their laptops.

However, my recent laptop came with Vista home basic but came with Upgrade CD (Anytime Upgrade)to make it into premium if I chose to pay Microsoft directly. Btw, you can't SAY that it came with pro since they know what product lines cames with what versions.

OEM license keys.

not true.
I was talking to IBM LENOVO support, after I gave my serial, model #ber, and all, guy asked me what I was running PRO or OEM XP, and I said PRO! and he didn't question it, and he mailed me out recovery CD's in PRO format to redo my Thinkpad for FREE since my recovery Partition is F'd! :)

I hightly doubt it. Even you did installed an OEM Pro, you are required to enter the CD-Key that is sticked on your laptop to order the Vista upgrade. No matter what, the CD-Key is a Home Edition, so you ended up screwing yourself and fraud. :p

By the way, my friend ended up not wanting the laptop. It is still unopen, sealed in it's box. Anyone in Montreal who still looking for one, PM me. Asking cost plus a small tip (I do have to drive there, buy it and even pay for parking) for my trouble. *hehe* It would be nice though, helping little poor me. :)

On a side note, I was burning a 2.4x rated verbatim DL disk, and it burnt at 4x!!! so these DL burners do more than the 2.4x I thought they maxed out at.

Two things which caught me a little by surprise. I had somehow been under the impression that there was a finger print reader, which it doesn't have. I don't know where I had gotten this impression.

To any that may be put off by the thought of buying the French version:

I made the trip to Montreal to pick one up along with my "free" printer.

It wasn't a big deal to install an English version of Windows XP Pro on my "French" laptop after, of course, making a full set of backup/recovery disks in case I ever want to return it to OEM condition. I would have done a clean format and re-install anyway just so I could have access to all 100 gigs of HD space. I now have an "English" laptop with the added benefit of having French characters on my keyboard.

I'm quite impressed with this thing. I have yet to see anything else come close to it in terms of price/performance.

Is there any way of obtaining the drivers, and the Lenovo software on CD?

I want to reformat mine as well as there's a whole bunch of crap on here, plus maybe make another partition as well. Have folks done that ?

Hi there,

Alright, their website claimed that they only do rebates for Vista Basic, but for some reason, the rebate form, you can do Home Premuim? Something is really wrong here. I feel ripped off because the price difference between Basic and Home is like 30$ and Home have features that are in XP Home that the Basic do not have. Bascially, cripping down to a crap software. Some upgrade to me...

If the computer came with XP Home preinstalled you only qualify for a free upgrade to Vista Home Basic - they didn't hide this fact... the only thing that isn't fair is the $27 shipping charge that Microsoft bends you over for.

No, Vista, will come with it's OWN CDKEY. Since it is an upgrade, all it needs is a previous Windows XP or a Vista of LOWER status, and it will install and then ask you for your NEW Vista key, which comes with your new Vista order.

Hi there,

No I was saying, if you order the Vista Upgrade DVD from the website, it will ask you for the CD-Key from the back of the laptop. Even you did pick "PRO" it will verified the CD-Key is valid. Even you did get a Windows XP Pro techincially fraudly free, you can't updated it Vista Business via the program without a valid CD-Key...

I noticed when I goto the Lenovo Site, and auto-detect my model, it comes up saying that it HAS a finger print reader...
So I am wondering if lenovo themselves would let me give this one back to them for one with a fingerprint reader as it did detect the model correctly, and lenovo website says it DOES have one.

and on a side note, can I buy a PCI-E Laptop Video card and pop it in, or is their not a slot ? I really hate the 945GM onboard video... since CnC3 demo crashes in game, I am sure it is the onboard video.

Finally got one from a friend in Alberta !!

Two things which caught me a little by surprise. I had somehow been under the impression that there was a finger print reader, which it doesn't have. I don't know where I had gotten this impression.

Second thing, it doesn't come with the Microsoft Office suite, which was a little surprising. Will have to get one now, I guess.

Been using it and seems a great buy so far!! Congrats to those who want it.

Hi there,

I mean when you order your Vista upgrade from the website via Express Upgrade, they will verified the COA and receipts. If you do managed to get it, then there, don't brag about it...

I have this laptop brand new that I bought for someone.

They don't want it any more, I will let it go for $1000 to anybody who wants it. I want to get rid of it ASAP. I am currently in Mississauga/Oakville and would be able to meet only for the next few days and then I'm going to Winnipeg.

Anyone got vista charge to credit card or ship?

My has been stuck in ready to ship since the begining of March. I have not been charged yet.

To get the rebate from lenevo, you need to submit the invoice that comes with the Vista upgrade to Lenovo. That was originally postmarked by April 30, but now I see they have changed it received by May 31.

I emailed the vista upgrade people at the end of april to see if it was ship ASAP so that I could do the rebate, and they replied "Yes, it will ship ASAP".
