Per week.

How flexible is your company with regards to allowing employees OT hours? Have you ever gotten in trouble for working too much? Does someone have to authorise your hours? And if you are on salary, do you get paid OT on top of that? Reason why I ask is before when I worked for RBC call centre, they pay salary plus OT hours if you work it.

Depending on the department, but where I am the volume of work we get is outside of control, thus if we're overloaded and help doesn't come our way when asked and people's short then we have no choice but to charge it. And management is pretty relaxed about it. As long as the place doesn't look like all hell's broke loose they're happy.

On average I put in about 8-10hrs of OT a week staying late and sometimes coming in on the weekend saturday as well. Last two weeks I logged 22 and 21 hrs of OT.

One time I did work 7 days straight though and I didn't know, but on the 7th day they have to pay me double time and a half. That was a nice cheque. But 3 people from management had a chat with me though. "Ummm...about that TPS report...."

Right now I'm in a management position, so I do not get paid OT (although it is expected to do OT in order to get the amount of work done). To compensate, the company provides a larger bonus incentive program.

When I used to be non-management, the company would pay 1.5x hourly salary or you could bank 1.5x time. It does need to be pre-approved. Also, if it is the company that asks you to stay OT and if they give less than 1 days' notice, then you are automatically paid for 4 hour OT (regardless of how much you work. eg. if you need to work 2 hours, they will pay for 4 because they approached you without enough notice). They will also give a meal allowance in this case because you wouldn't have known to bring dinner in because it was unplanned.

Ahh overtime pay... enjoy it now!

I've been in management too long, we don't get overtime pay (but like the post above, the bonuses are bigger, etc...)

I work for an accounting firm. Any hours we work over 37.5 a week are considered overtime. All overtime is banked at straight time and either used for time off or paid out at year end.

I work at one of the HQ Bank offices and I was putting in 70 - 80 hour weeks. I did get paid time and a half after 37.5...

Not really worth it considering you barely had time to do anything else.

I also work at an accounting firm. We work 50-70+ hours a week with no overtime pay.

OUCH! I also work in accounting firm... a very, very tiny one. So while I don't have the glitz and glamour of working in the BIG 4, I hardly do any overtime (maybe sat. mornings during march and april).

That being said, I am looking to switch jobs into a bigger firm... insane overtime IS something all CAs should experience, right? hahaha.

Likewise. I work for one of the big4 and all hours above 37.5 are banked at time and a half.

I don't do much overtime, maybe 10-15 hours per month.

Back when Andersen Worldwide was still in existent, the non-managers would have their OT, more than 40 hours a week, banked into extra vacation or get paid out 1.5x salary.....employee choice..
This was also true for Andersen Consulting(now Accenture)....
With the crazy hours that some Senior assoicates or consultants do on a weekly basis, it wasn't unusual with OT that they get paid more than the managers...

The firm I work for is in between a small and medium size firm. We are located in BC, just outside Vancouver.

Our partners have worked for one of the big 4 when they were articling. The partners have young families and they believe there is more to life than working so they have made it part of the business plan to make sure everyone who works at the firm has a life too. If the workloads get heavy they hire a new team member. Even the managers bank their OT over 37.5 hours.

BTW - I only work 10 hours of OT a month, if that.

Of course we probably don’t get a lot of the perks that a larger firm has to offer. We do get our tuition paid for, gym membership, Costco membership (I am not sure why we get this), bonus program and new client incentives. We also have socials throughout the year and the firm usually has lunch brought in for everyone at least once a month.

Is this at a downtown Toronto office or somewhere else?
I have heard of this at some of the smaller offices. Hours at Big 4 can vary a lot depending on the office, the client you're working on, your level of efficiency, as well as simply how much you want to work.

yes... "back yard" is nice to think about. But most people aim to move OUT of there unless its for a vacation or to visit family.

Im in managment as well, small company. No OT at all is paid in our company, not for the new techs, and not even for me :D

I put in allot of OT, working late is MY choice to get stuff done. I do log my OT hours though and I get to take equivelant time off in hours, but its 1:1 not anything more.

I put in 5 hrs extra a week I get 5hrs off if I want to at another time. Where I am now though its expected as if I want to move up and be responsible for more I have to work hard, which I already do.

Sometimes I wish we got paid OT for our extra work, but sometimes it works out when we get free material from the company for our own use (cables/electronics etc).

Cool, which of the big4 is that? The guy above you (Wanker) get his banked at straight time. I'm going to apply to accounting firms this coming September, I've always heard that tax season is insane (60 hour work weeks!). Oh yea, and apparently at KPMG (this from a friend who is doing her co-op there), they don't get paid OT or have their time banked at 1.5. What does "banked" mean anyhow? You work 10 hours OT now and get 15 hours off later on?

I work for a big-4 accounting firm as well and anything over 37.5 is called "the way it is". No overtime is banked and you don't get anything in lieu unless you worked on a stat. This is the way with most salaried positions. I tend to work approximately 45-50 hours a week. I've been here for 5 years and never heard of anyone in any big-4 getting paid overtime, or having hours banked. I'd be interested in knowing who does and in what group.

Yes. It's called "salary". For most companies, there is a "reasonable expectation of overtime" that is not specifically laid out in the contract. The bottom line is that when you are hired, you would find out what your pay parameters are. If you don't like not getting paid overtime, then don't work there and find a wage-paying position.

It depends on the office. Some KPMG offices do bank/pay out for OT...but as far as I know, none of the Big 4 downtown Toronto offices do.

BTW 60 hours/week isn't crazy at all by Big 4 standards in Toronto. It depends on the type of clients you're on. Certain industries are easier than others. i.e. If you think 60 hours is crazy...you definitely don't want to work on financial services clients in Toronto.

Well if I'm not getting paid for the extra 20 hours, hell yea it's crazy! I should just become a teacher, get 2 months off every summer.
