I was browsing through the Guelph Walmart at lunch today and noticed that they were marking a lot of items in the toy section to clearance.

I found a Superman (yeah, I know, but for this price, I couldn't resist  ) 7" portable DVD player for $50. Can't remember exactly what the original price was, but it was in the region of $120.

OK, so you may not sit on the plane and watch a movie with this, but it's great while sitting on the john and other non-public places!

In the setup menu, there's an option to choose NTSC or PAL. I was hoping that it was region free as I have a collection of R2 discs, but it came up "Wrong Region" when I tried them.

I've taken a look on videohelp, but there's no reference to this model and I couldn't find the "real" manufacturer for this portable to see if they had the same chipsets, etc.

In the setup menu, there's an option to choose NTSC or PAL.

That's for the video output (to TV).

You can try to figure out the chipset by how the setup menus look sometimes.

does this play divx/xvid by any chance?

Feb 10th, 2007, 12:44 PM
No, no divx / xvid unfortunately. That was actually my 1st test of the player!

I threw in a disc with some movies on there and got excited when it showed the directory structure. So I clicked into the folders, but no files were shown. I guess it shows folders for when you play jpg's or mp3's.

What kind of battery does this have/take? I am thinking of getting one for our 3 year old for a flight to Australia, I need to be able to replace the batteries mid-flight since recharging will not be possible (on Air Canada). Thx OP.

I checked this out in Ottawa yesterday and the tag on the shelf said $150 or so... the unit scanned at $110.

However there was a Dora TV with DVD player for $50(half price).

They also had that music keyboard that hooks up to your TV. At Christmas it was $100 now it is down to $30.

It comes with its own Ni-MH battery that says it lasts for 2.5 hours. Don't know if you can purchase additional onesb or not.

It comes with cables for both video and audio. There is a switch on the unit to swap between input and output. It also comes with AC/DC adapter, car adapter, headphones, and 2 headphone jacks.

Actually Hello Kitty on IS a DVD player without LCD built in - I almost got fooled too. Found the hello kitty but couldn't find superman. Glad I saw that it is just a cheap dvd player no lcd.

An associate told me they were sold out but upon searching the back corner I found a batch of 11 of these Superman portable dvd players. So I got 2 one for me and one for a friend. Look pretty decent for 50 - especially when I go over to electronics and the cheapest one is $99.

It is has a Ni-MH rechargable battery that slides on the back. So no chance of using normal rechargables. But it does come with wall AND car charger.

My googling skills are rather poor. Does anyone have any specs for this DVD player?

I got one from the Surrey, BC store (last one). I opened it up, the chipset is a Mediatek MT1389, and the LCD is an Innotek AT070TN01 which has a resolution of 480x234. That is not the standard DVD resolution of 720x480, so the picture is being scaled to fit.

The model number is KSU744C, but the only thing that comes up on google is a hit for Toys R Us who are selling it for $129.xx. There is no information on the manufacturer's site: http://www.kidsstationtoys.com/.

It does play SVCDs, but not XviD movies. I haven't tried a PAL disc yet, though the player is marked as region 1 only. There is an S-Video connector, but no cable (the connector is not a standard s-video connector) so I don't know if it is output only, or input and output like the composite video.

I picked up one this morning and there were three left in the aisle with the bikes/tricycles. This was at the Innis Rd Walmart in Ottawa.

I also saw a Spongebob DVD player (no LCD screen) for $25 and many other toys on clearance.

Thanks OP!

not my unit...
Display doesnt seem to work properly.

You can see the superman load screen for 1 sec... after that its very dim...
With the angle of light I was able to get into the Video setup menu and max brightness... which let me see slightly better (still very broken).
I think maybe it is stuck in Display Off mode? ... theres a button for it on the remote but doesnt seem to do anything.

Guess its going back... :(

edit: its dark enough that unless you looked closely you'd assume its off.

That is the EXACT problem I just had opening what seemed like a brand new unit;my son was very disappointed. It seems like an overall electronics problem, as the TFT backlight works when the unit powers on, but never again. Even tested a video input signal, and although the screen seemed lit and ready to receive it, it did not display. So, once you get a working unit of these, cross your fingers it doesn't break down the road; they're worth the $50+$7(tax), but if it breaks you need to write a US$20 cheque, & send it to Miami, under a 90 day warranty.

not a bad price i guess... but kinda funny looking if you're carrying it around in public lol

i'd prefer just a std looking portable dvd player, no fancy designs/colours... :P

you'll always have 30 days to return it, and 90 days exchange, i think.
