So my PS2 just all of a sudden stopped playing ps2 games, everything worked fine before and I have never had a problem. I've had it for a long time now, got it about a month after the release date.
It still plays PS1 games fine, and DVD's but not PS2 games. It rarely ever loads up PS2 games, 99% of the time it says disc read error even though the disc barely has any scratches on it.
Is there a problem with the laser or something? Can this be fixed? Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

DRE is most likely caused by your laser, it happens as the ps2 gets older.
search up on google on how to fix DRE's (disc read error), its pretty easy, and if that doesn't work, then you need a new laser.
My ps2 also had DRE's, but after I opened it up and cleaned the laser, it started working perfect.

I dont know why, but when i had 2 memory cards inserted on to the PS2, i get disc read errors all the time. But right when i took one card out, it started to wrok fine again. If you have 2 memory card, try using only 1 or none at all.

I wanted to get my PS2 modded. The guy who was going to do it had me do a disc read test to make sure I wasn't going t waste my money. Anyways my laser wasn't up to par (I had gotten it within a couple months of the coming out) he told me exactly what to do. Call Sony tech support, tell them I am getting disc read errors on multiple discs that work fine on other units. I did this. Sony told me to fill out some forms and mail it in which I did. Sony settled a class action suit several years ag because of defective lasers and the settlement was they agreed to fix and laser suffering from the problem. I sent my unit in and got it back like a week later. Sony had screwed up the actual tray by doing their repair (it wouldn't close properly). I called them up and they said to send it back I told them I wasn't paying for return shipping when they caused a problem, the argued spoke with a manager and he gave me some games to compensate....when you fill out their forms for returning a unit for work one of the questions is do you want unit fixed or replaced, the first time I said fixed the second time I said replaced and they did! Brought the unit over to mod guy, it was still and older unit but when I picked it up he said it was brand new and must have been sitting on the shelf in a warehouse. Bottom line is call Sony tell them you are have DRE's and they'll replace the laser free of charge.
