View Full Version : Hooking up upconverting dvd player to older HDTV

my buddy has a 4ish year old RCA 52inch 4:3 HDTV i think it does 540p, It only has component video inputs in the back and vga inputs. Is it possible to hook upconverting hdmi player to it via HDMI to DVI to VGA adaptors? Is it worth it?
I know it can take HD inputs from HD box...what inputs would be used in that case?
Could this same combo be used to hook other HD devices in... I will buy the parts off of monoprice once I figure this out.
Anybody know how to do this?

monoprice has no such cable. HDMI is digital, while VGA is analog. You'll need some kind of transcoder to do the job instead of just a cable.

As long as your tv accepts signals like 480p etc and not just 480i then you can set your dvd player to output it through component (3 coloured video cables and 2 audio)

im going to have to check the manual but he has the same philips model that I do... it will do 480P through component and I believe it upconverts to 1080i... I dont use the HDMI ability myself as I only have a 32inch Toshiba CRT. I just wondered if there is a better alternative to 480P cabable through the player. It mentions 576P !?!? its a philips DVP 5900.

It's unlikely though that the upconverting DVD player will upconvert through anything other than HDMI.

Yeah my DVD player only upconverts when using HDMI.

There are very few upconverting DVD players that will upconvert over component video. I have an LG for sale here (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=356262&highlight=7832nxc) that will upconvert over component.
