I'm looking to get a replacement for my folks' 20" CRT television as a gift,
since there's is dieing. I'm looking at spending between $80 and $150. In
that price range, there's Insignia, Legend, Electrohome, Magnasonic, and
Citizen TVs. There's also a Toshiba model at the extreme end, but the
others I can take directly back to the stores that are selling them, or else
get an exteneded warranty fairly cheaply, whereas the warranty would be on
top of the $150 at Future Shop, and only has a 7 day warranty at Canadian
Tire. Does anyone have any experiences with the above brands of CRTs?
Thanks.

these days CRT's are a dying breed. Most companies who still make CRT's don't use the same grade of components as they used to use 5 years ago. My 24" Sony Wega that cost me $1000 7 years ago and the new 24" Toshiba's I see are 2 totally different items in terms of quality. The screens are not as smooth as my Sony and have imperfections, the controls and internal circuits are not that good. Best to get the extended warranty as you mentioned and you should be fine.

I would check the Sony store as they had some smaller size TV's at clearout prices. About $300 for a 27" with 4 year Sony Care Warranty.

I bought 2 Insignia 20" models back in Nov 06 for $79 each. Unfortunately I can't tell you how good they are as I donated them to a hospital!!
