Well, it's his money. But if I were him, I would buy something that retain value for longer time like gold that I can cash them later.:)

Jan 18th, 2007, 10:11 AM
yes, maybe a place at metrotown would sell gold.
but $6300 on such a small tv?
i mean ... even if i was lazy and wanted to spend money. but, $6300 should easily be able to buy a 55 inch high class brand of plasma ..or about $4500 for a 46 inch sony BRAVIA lcd.

he coulda also gotten an extended warranty...and quoted the after-tax price...taxes alone would be at least $500.

The Sony Store is famous for MSRP pricing and he probably got loaded down with EP, matching stand, mounting, etc.

The Sony store is actually a good place to haggle at. I've never paid MSRP for anything I bought there.
It'd be pretty simple to spend $6300 on that TV
46" XBR3 ($4800) + extended warranty + stand + taxes + HDMI Monster Cables would easily top $6300

He should try and sell some stuff to get cash. After all, this merchandise will devalue over time.

the guy who won the lotto is a dumb arse. he claims to have made a careful list and prepared it by shopping in 'advance'. but even a total noob could easily get a tv bigger than 46 inches for $6300 incl tax.

You'd think when you're given $64,900 to blow at the mall, price would be irrelevant.
But James Christopherson is not the kind of man to waste money -- not even free money.
So haggling for a discount at the Sony store at Metrotown seemed like the right thing to do.
His wife, Anna, however, watched in disbelief.
"Just get it!" she said. "He's always been that way. But today? Give me a break. Just spend!"
For the White Rock restaurateur, yesterday was the culmination of a month of planning.
As the winner of a Lotto 6/49 shopping spree, Christopherson was given exactly six hours and 49 minutes to spend $64,900 at Metrotown.
Up until last month, the couple had never won more than $100 on Lotto tickets.
When Christopherson was first told he had won a shopping spree with a $10 Lotto 6/49 ticket, he was sure the caller had the wrong number.
"He had to tell the lady on the phone, 'I think you've got the wrong person,'" said his wife. "And she kept saying 'Are you not James Christopherson?'"
Once it sank in that the money was for real, the family got to work.
"We listed things, priced out things and added up things to try to get an idea of what we'd be spending," said Christopherson.
Next came a four-hour scouting trip -- and a thick file full of price comparisons -- to make sure they were getting maximum bang for the buck.
New kitchen appliances, double-paned glass windows and a big-screen TV were at the top of the wish list.
For the couple's two daughters -- Melina, 11, and Sophia, 7 -- it was new hockey gear and a computer.
Then it was new knives for the chefs at Christopherson's Pelagos Greek Restaurant.
Christopherson had a map and a plan: Hit the Sony store first, then Sears and The Bay.
"We decided to do some home renos so we could get a lot of the money spent quickly and save some fun for the end," said Christopherson, who spent all the money in the required time.
Just five minutes into the spree, he had spent $6,363.45 on a 46-inch flat screen TV.
He didn't get a discount, but he did get free delivery.

THEIR LOOT
Some of the high-end items James Christopherson garnered during his shopping spree yesterday at Metrotown:
- One Sony LCD 46-inch TV.
- A stainless-steel range and a microwave, designed for above the stove.
- Oversized washer and dryer.
- Mattresses for himself and his wife and their two children.
- IPods for the children.
- One dishwasher.
- Double-paned windows for their family's house.

That's IT??? $65K and that's all they come out with???? They did NOT spend that money wisely at ALL! You could have had ALL new appliances, TV, stereo, computers, beds, MP3 players, wardrobe, toys, and windows easily. They probably bought the most expensive versions of everything rather than getting "really good" and covering all the bases.
Dummies.

instead getting appliances at sears, they should have went to the metrotown futureshop, which of course has both tv's and fancy appliances.

He haggled? With only 6 hours 49 minutes, who cares! Even as an RFDer, I'd rather be able to spend all the money before trying to SAVE money... if you don't use it, you don't get it.

i think the problem was that the guy was a tightwad to begin with and so he had no experience with spending money properly. he only had experience in NOT spending anything.

futureshop might not be in the list of eligible shops
I think it's part of Station Square, not Metrotown Town Centre

Yup, I wonder if they were excluded or not though. I mean, what idiot wouldn't think of spending the money on buying gift cards which are easy to carry, quick to purchase, and easy to resell.

PROBABLY or it wouldn't have really made an exciting headline. Guy uses 64,900 to buy GCs doesn't have the same ring as dumb arse spends 6300 on 46 LCD tv.
