Based on my experience, there are at least three versions of this webcam. One is the old one you show, which works very well. Then there's the newest, which has "intelligent face tracking", and one inbetween that looks like the newest but does NOT have the IFT (or maybe me face wasn't very intelligent that day). Anyway, I found the IQ on the newer ones to be poor, and both had dead pixel issues.

Is the new one bad or is it just that you can it for 25$ regular price from staples?

For $25 I'd consider its imperfections, but I wouldn't pay a dime for for it. The old version, I would grab.

FS has the one without IFT, i dont think STX ever has that features.

Maybe there are bad batch out there. But i have both old and new version. The old one is the one i'm currently using. When i test the new one i just bought the picture quality is the same. I dont know why others are claiming the old one is better

The quality like i said very good. No dead pixel or other flaws. I bought my old one for $25+ tax i think.

I can tell you without a doubt, the newest version DOES do face tracking. I tried it, it worked fine that way. The IQ sucked, however. The new replacement did NOT have it (though they looked very much alike, they were not). Its IQ was also awful. And I own two of the old versions, and the IQ on both are very good (and no dead pixels on either).

Thats strange because i just tested the new one. It looks exactly like the old one i'm using in term of IQ.

Maybe because i'm using the driver of the old one?

Also i'm saying for sure that the new ones i bought from FS does NOT have IFT.

Then its not the most recent version. The first one I got the inside head actually moved around inside. The second was attached. I tried out the IFT and it worked very well.

As for the old to the newer versions, start by looking at the cords. See any difference? The overall feel of the cam? Its clearly been cheapened to introduce new features and keep the price down. Now, make sure you have the image full size, and look around for little red or green or blue spots. The first one I had had red spots, the second had green. The IQ wasn't nearly as good on the newer versions and I had them running on the same computer side by side to test my theory out.

BTW, you MAY have the newest version. The only way to tell is install the latest software from the Logitech site. You activate it in software. The second one I got (ver. 2, lets say) eliminated the option, and had "focus" grayed out.

I saw at least 20 units today in Staples - Heartland. It seems a good deal, but I though it over again. Why would I want someone to see what am I doing in front of my computer?? typing? Good if you work out of town a lot and want to see your kids on your notebook.

staples has the older model for $35.97 right now. FS has the newer model for $77.99 right now. Is it safe to say that this deal is dead?

Actually, Staples has the round (newer?) one on clearance for $35.97 (Item Number 614148), and the older one selling for $25 (Item Number 656097).

For $25, the kids can quit fighting over the one they currently share. Thanks OP.

Wait, is IFT a mechanism movement of the cam? or is it digital zoom?

Yes the newer one seems to be abit cheaper, espesically the cable. But i honestly test them side by side, i dont see a different in IQ ???

I looked for dead pixels, none. (Its strange that a wc would produce a dead pixels( make no sense but i understand what you mean)

OK i have just done another intensive testing between the new one and the old one.

Both using Logitech Quickcam 10.0. Viewing in 1.3 megapixels. IQ is EXACTLY the same. No dead pixels whatsoever.

Then i use Windows Explorer to running both WCs at the same time (couldnt do it with LogitechQuickcam). I find the newer version can automatically adjust the brightness. My face was much brighter under the desk lamp so the new one adjust it dimmer make it look.... better IMO. With the old one it doesnt hence my face is very bright, but it enhanced my look a bit ( skin looks brighter).

Overall i would say they both have same IQ. If anyone want to test it its only $19.70 from FS, what do you have to loose? You can always return it.

I think i'm a happy customer.

Ps, i gotta admit the new one has skinner cables, cheaper plastic but hey it works as well as the old one so i dont care much.

Maybe I got defective cams. One was bought at FS the other LDs. BTW, digital cameras all have pixel censors, and they can have stuck or dead pixels. Mine did, and they were very noticeable.

Anyone know the real price match policy at Futureshop? The manager today gave me big trouble cause I was buying 5. He wanted to low-ball me and charge me $25 for each of them, but I refused. Then he said he'd have to call the nearest staples and make sure they had 5 in stock.

I told him they had stock online and he said it didn't matter. Then I told him if he's going to call Staples make sure he calls every single one in Downtown Montreal, he said that's not policy. They call the nearest one and if it has no stock, I get nothing or I can take his "deal" at $25 a piece.

Anyone?

Well if your local Staples doesnt have one instock, he can refuse to PM as the policy. BUT....

Staples online has free shipping. Go on Staples, add them to cart, go to check out and print the page out. Shows them that they're all instock as you can add them to cart. Ask them to PM, if he refuse ask him to read the policy out loud and explain what he doesnt understand word by word.

Really, you must FIGHT and said i wont leave the store without either an explanation from the head office or a PM. Be touch, keep bothering him. He probably saw you're too soft.

I wasn't soft at all. I specifically said I wasn't going to take it @ $25, then glared at him, looked at his name tag, said it and asked if that was his name.

When he came back out he was all smiles and said he was going to let me have 5 stock even though Staples only had 3.

but when I saw the invoice, it was 24.96 and then asked about it. A guy told me that he cant do PM for me cos " the webcam isnt on sale, so I cant give you PM" wt...

then I called 1-800 number and asked what happened... of cos after a long conversation, he told me to print out both shops web pages and go back to store to ask manager...

At last manager told CSS to PM and apologised... As RFDer I asked the manager to tell the saleman about the real PM policy

Its 10% of the difference, not the price.

So $78 - $25 = $53 x 10% = $5.30

So the final price is $25 - $5.30 = $19.70

Valve adjustment on B series is very easy. My only tip is to be patient and take your time. I bet the guide you found should be clear enough.

I had a built NA B20 Vtec (LS), now i'm building a K20(RSX-S) with stoker kit from Crower. It should be K23 when its done and rev happily to 10,000RPM. I'm into NA more than FI.

Also my first mods are always footage : tires, dampers, brakes. I find it change the feel of the car completely.

We're WAY OFF topic here :)

If you only want to buy 1 of these cams and want to avoid the FS spiel about shipping, just PM using the flyer. If you don't have the flyer, go to the flyer online and print that out. You may not be able to see the details of the cam on the flyer, so before you print the page, hover your mouse over the picture of the cam and a pop-up description will be displayed with the details. Using the keyboard (ALT + F, then P) print the page keeping the pop-up description showing.

So, I bought the Quickcam Messenger a few weeks back at Staples, for $14.95 and was wondering if it is any good, I have just ordered 2 of the Communicate STX, and was wondering which one is better, as far as clarity, and such. I have a Webcam Messenger from years ago, that the picture quality is awful, bad colouring, grainy picture, can't get the focus ring to work well. Thought maybe the new one would be better for $5 more I would get the Communicate STX if is it alot better.

I don't think the Messenger has the rightlight technology though!

Be careful using this printout, went to BB and they denied because it says clearance, they do not PM clearance prices... so went to FS up the road, and they did it, when I just showed them the print out of the online sale price. They were going to call the Staples near there to confirm stock, but couldn't find the number, so they just gave it to me for $19.70 and it does have the intelligent face tracking technology.

hey guys.. i just bought 2 of these today at staples and ended up returning them. While they may be sufficient for some.. i found them horrible. Here is my small review for those thinking about purchasing.

The newer version of the camera looks cool.. however, it can only sit on top of a flat screen as it has no stand.
The image quality is poor, and even at low res, it is very slow to respond. Any quick movement is lagged. The face recognition is just sad.. maybe i expected too much from this technology but if you move about a foot in any direction, by the time the camera actually adjusts itself to your face, you're already somewhere else.. it's that bad.
And last but not least.. but definitly the deal breaker for me.. after installing the software (which btw is needed in windows vista as drivers are not found by default) there are roughly 4-6 .exe files loaded in memory at startup.. which ARE required for chatting with webcam through IM.

bad.. just bad.

but anyway.. if you're looking for something to take a few quick pics of yourself in a very pixelated 1.3MP quality.. then this camera is for you.

For those who picked up two or more - did you picked all of them at the same time or did you have to run around to different stores and get them? Not really. It's a 640x480 sensor which makes it a 0.3MP camera... don't expect the same resolution as a digital camera.
(The "1.3MP" is software interpolation.)

So, for $20 after PM, I decided to get one. First, the checkout person tried to call Staples and couldn't get through (about five minutes on hold), then she "has to ask my manager", then she comes back and price matches at $25. I said, it should be a Price Match! She then comes back with a before tax price of $23. I thought everyone was saying it was $19.70? What is the policy there? Anyway, I said forget it and walked out.

The Coquitlam Center Future Shop had about 30 units left on their shelves at noon.

The best part was they had to okay the price match with the manager at the Customer Service Desk. He initially refused the price match and I had to read out their own price matching policy back to them. The Coquitlam Center Future Shop had about 30 units left on their shelves at noon.

The best part was they had to okay the price match with the manager at the Customer Service Desk. He initially refused the price match and I had to read out their own price matching policy back to them. LOL

They're calling us "unethical", that's a good one. It just wasn't worth saving $5 to bother, especially given the quality of the product.

They are trying to hustle you, that happened to me too. The manager offered it @ 25 a piece, I said no, I want the price match price which is below $20.

Thanks OP!

yes in their policy it says that they don't PM clearance prices, BUT all you need to do is double check w/ stooples if that's a clearance price

AFAIK, it shouldn't be b/c it doesn't end in a "7" - similar to FS/BB's clearance pricing except it's '.95' or '.97'

I really think the icing on the cake was the fact that I bought 5 webcams and not just one unit.

From their stand point, they should have gotten almost $400 for the 5 webcams... but instead I handed them about $100. LMAO

Even as I walked to the tils for my purchase, some guy from the computer dept came up to me and put a stick Future Shop issued post it note on the cams for commission. The freaking guy never helped me and thought he'd get a nice commission based on a $400 sale. LOL

My thoughts exactly, FS has sold the webcam previously for $30-35 after rebate. It's just now that their deal has been beaten by someone else, they're upset.

OTOH, the manager does have reason to be upset, you're cutting into his margin/gross profit for his store which likely will hurt his year end bonus. $5 may not seem like much on a single occurence, but over the course of the year couldl add up, including all those open box items.

Both BB & FS will beat a competitor's price by 10% of the difference. To calculate the price they are supposed to sell it to you for, just subtract the cheaper price from their price then take 10% of that and subtract it from the competitor's price.

For example:
Staples price = $25
Future Shop price = $77.99
$77.99 - $25 = $52.99
10% of $52.99 = $5.30 ($5.299)
$25 - $5.30 = $19.70

I'd say about 90% or the time when I go to FS or BB (FS is worse) they always "forget" to beat the price initially and just match it. Then I question them and they say "Oh ya, I forgot to beat it"... I guess they get paid commission and want to make a few more cents off of you? I dunno... if it wasn't for their %110 PM policy, I'd never shop at either of those stores.

Um, don't BB and FS work along with the mods and owners here to release early details, say for Boxing Week sales, and such. Might be the managers downfall when he b*tches to head office and they tell him that they love RFD'ers, as not only do we go in to the store to PM, but when we see a good deal, we also spend unnecessary amounts of money online and in store, as good deals are pointed out to those that might not otherwise read about them.

I honestly think you got bad ones from what you describe. Mine doesnt come with Face tracking so maybe its different. I find the quality is on part with the old one, so its good.
Mine didn't have a stand? Did anyone else have a stand with theirs?

Also, I do find a little lag, not sure if it is because of software or drivers, but when I talk, to record for instance, the camera picks up video fine but the sound is off a little bit.

How much do you have to spend to get one that the quality is really good, saw someone with perfect clarity and focus, and colour and they were sitting in a dark room... said it was logitech, but not which model!

"You are one of those guys from the Red Flag Website. What you guys do is illegal and unethical... I'm going to speak to our head office to make sure you guys don't take advantage of us again."

Well, maybe we should all file a complaint to FS HQ about that. First, it's "illegal and unethical" to accused a customer. Second, it's out right rude and saying that in front of other customers and you should feel quite insulted. Last, if I got into that situation, the first thing I will say, well, "remove your 110% policy and that will solve your problem" After all, they are advertising it with a huge sign, so!

Give them crap! Lots of it, I say. By the way, I got two, so. :D

What IM program are you using? I find the motion blurs very bad if i choose 1.3 MP, but when i use it with Yahoo Messenger its perfect.

Also the reason it messed up the sound card is its software is a *****. It automatically reset and messed up your media software output preference. I had to set the output to my soundcard device. I have 2 sound cards in my computer has i have multizone and multi stream.

For $20 i have no complains. But you're right it is worth the retail price. Logitech has gone down in quality alot lately.

If you plug it into an USB(1) port it'll probably popup a message near the tray that says "This device can run faster if you plug it into a USB2 port".

But to be sure, use SiSoft Sandra (http://www.download.com/SiSoftware-Sandra-Lite/3000-2094-10556571.html),
go in the Ports section, select 'USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller' and see if it's listed there (you'll see also the Speed it's using, it should say 'High (480Mbps)'

Staples had both models for $25 last week. The sale is over now with the new one going back up to $79.96 and the old one at $30.57.

Instead of installing the Logitech software (which sounds like that can be a nightmare in itself), I've only installed the drivers to make it work. So far so good...

so I just bought this a lil while ago for a cheap webcam and I was looking at the specs once it was connected and I don't believe it does USB2. I read up online and a lot of people have mentioned it. I've tried it on 2 comps now and it just uses 1.1. Unless theres something majorly wrong I'm doing??

Same here, at first I was suspecting I used the wrong port however latero on found out in the same port all my other USB2 devices (External Hard disk, Wireless USB adapter etc.) Only this Camera always 1.1. Thus, it makes the capture ability of movement even worse than the very old Logitech 420 I have now, very bad ghosting.

Is there anything else I should do to make it USB2 since I did use the latest driver of this camera, or it just simply sucks?

I have a similiar problem. I bought a Pro 5000 a couple of months ago. The driver coming with thsi webcam (or the whole software package coming with this webcam) worked fine. A week ago, I accidently deleted some files in my machine (thought they might be adware/spyware) and webcam did not work since then. Couldn't find the original cd, I downloaded the new driver from Logitech website. Guess what? Whenever I start MSN with webcam, my computer crashes.

Hmm...Maybe it is because some files I deleted, not installed by using new software package? Ok, let me try a brand new machine which I just installed winxp. Still, after installing the new pachage, my new computer crashed whenever I start msn with webcam.

I don't know what's going on with Logitech!

wow, this thing is such a disappointment. its my first webcam and mercy its all blurry and grainy, the thing screwed up my internet connection and wouldnt let me boot up as it just hung on a black screen. and i am running this on a brand new computer.

i got it via futureshop online, am I able to bring this back to the store in the city and say i dont want it?
